Column: The New Day keep on shining

Less than two years ago, Xavier Woods, Kofi Kingston and Big E were all toiling away in the midcard for WWE. None of them had any direction and each were seen as wrestlers who would never come close to sniffing the main event scene. It’s hard to believe how much has changed since the trio teamed up to become of WWE’s hottest attractions in The New Day late in 2014. The New Day has become one of WWE’s go to teams in the past year.

UNM's ​Center for Teaching Excellence accepting nominations for outstanding instructors

The Faculty Senate Teaching Enhancement Committee and the Center for Teaching Excellence are currently accepting nominations for outstanding educators at UNM, According to a UNM press release. “Nominations are now being accepted. Instructors, students and staff are eligible to nominate faculty for award recognition,” according to the press release. The deadline for nominations is Wednesday. The Center for Teaching Excellence serves as a general resource center for all UNM instructors including tenured and tenure-track faculty, lecturers, adjunct faculty, faculty on branch campuses, teaching assistants, clinician educators and all others who have an instructional role in the classroom.

UNM BeKind begins 15th year

By Denicia Aragon UNM's BeKind Committee is collaborating with UNM Student affairs to bring National Random Acts of Kindness Day to UNM, but not just for one day, the celebration will continue for two weeks from February 3rd to the 13th, including both new and returning traditions. "[UNM BeKind] started this about 15 years ago, and its really just to promote kindness, being courteous, safety and even gratitude.  For people to be reminded that each and every day is a good day to help someone or make them feel better if they are having a bad day." Dr. Kim Kloeppel, chief operations officer for Student Affairs and chair of UNM BeKind.

Track and Field: Third straight home meet happens this weekend

By Robert Maler New Mexico’s track and field team stays in Albuquerque for the third consecutive week to host the New Mexico Classic & Multis this weekend. Last weekend the Lobos saw several athletes set personal records and hit marks that might be good enough to earn a spot at the NCAA Indoor Championships in Birmingham, Alabama. Nine schools competed at the New Mexico Team Invitational last week.

Women's Soccer: Eight players sign to join Lobos

Heather Dyche’s first full recruiting effort netted eight new players to the New Mexico women’s soccer team, UNM announced on Wednesday. During National Signing Day, the Lobos added players at every position: three forward, two defenders, two goalkeepers and a midfielder to replace seven graduating seniors, all from various positions. Dyche in a statement expressed her excitement for the 2016 recruiting class. “We think they will come in and push our current players for starting positions.

Anti-Racism Day held at Roundhouse to promote progress

Action towards progress was the unofficial theme of New Mexico’s 2016 Anti-Racism Day, held in the Capitol’s Rotunda, on Wednesday. The celebration was proclaimed by Gov. Susanna Martinez earlier this year, and it was organized by the New Mexico Health Equity Working Group (NMHEWG), Senator Linda Lopez and Representative Javier Martinez.

Covert anti-women event cancelled

The UNM Bookstore was one of dozens of locations worldwide that was going to serve as a rendezvous for Saturday’s International Meetup Day, an event organized by an individual who styles himself as a believer of “neomasculinity” for his followers to meet in the hopes of creating “tribes” in various cities.

Q&A: Author Aerial Liese

Aerial “A.J.” Liese is a UNM alum who recently published a powerful memoir, “Three Promises For Jane: A True Story of Madness and Redemption.” Liese returned to UNM Wednesday morning to sign copies of her book and discuss the elements of the novel and her experience writing it.

Men's Basketball: Williams' strong effort in second half lifts Lobos

For a late span Tuesday night, a tight game morphed into a battle between UNM’s Tim Williams and UNLV’s Patrick Cornish. The teams played to a 70-all tie past the seven-minute mark in the second half. From that point to the final minute, only the forward Williams or guard Cornish saw the net. The two went back and forth, almost shot for shot.

It’s that time of the year again. Six new players joined the UNM men’s soccer team for the 2016 National Signing Day. But this isn’t just any group of players, Top Drawer Soccer ranked this Lobo recruiting class as the fifth best class in the nation.

PPD water project comes on the heels of record conservation

A current project by UNM's Physical Plant Department (PPD) aims to increase water conservation numbers on campus. This comes on the heels of the Albuquerque Bernalillo County Water Utility Authority's recent announcement that daily water usage per capita is at a record low of 127 gallons for the area in 2015. Katherine Yuhas, water conservation officer for the Albuquerque Bernalillo County Water Utility Authority, said this is largely due to widespread education on water resources throughout the community via television, radio, classroom presentations, field trips and more.

Letter: 'Evangelicals' attempting to bring down the wall between church and state

What with the top-tier Republican Presidential hopefuls falling over each other to pronounce how Christian they are, the enormous base of “Evangelicals” (what a pretty name for bigoted proselytizers) that they pander to is being emboldened even further into shattering the wall separating Church and State in places not just like Iowa.

Parade of Lights engages fans with their unique sound

For Parade of Lights the purpose of music is to engage others through their unique rock/electric sound and lyrics in order to relate and inspire others to be empowered to enjoy life. Parade of Lights is a band from the Los Angeles region that is currently on tour across the United States. The band comprises lead vocal and guitarist Ryan Daly, Anthony Improgo on the drums, Michelle Ashley on vocals and keyboard, and Randy Schulte on base.

Everyone at UNM reads, but the reasons for doing so vary. Students read textbooks because it’s required and instructors read because they do a lot of research. Daniel Wolne, the associate director of the religious studies program, refers to this unavoidable reading as “professional reading.” Its counterpart, reading for personal enjoyment, consists of the non-work related books people enjoy in their spare time.

New Mexico student-athletes reach new highs in the classroom

New Mexico student-athletes have been making noise in the classroom in addition to their performance for their respected sports programs. On Monday, UNM announced five UNM programs set cumulative GPA records for their respected teams. Men’s basketball, women’s basketball, men’s golf, women’s skiing, and both men and women’s track and field all fielded program-bests for their GPAs in fall of 2015.
