Volleyball: Lobos drop four-set match to Aggies

After taking the first set in the Rio Grande Rivalry, New Mexico fell the New Mexico State 3-1. In the last nonconference game of the regular season, UNM had trouble capitalizing against the Aggies, dropping three sets in a row. New Mexico (8-7, 1-1 MW) jumped out to a hot start, something head coach Jeff Nelson has preached to his squad all year. However, following the Lobos dominant 25-20 showing, the Lobos couldn’t manage another.

UNM hosts disability awareness job fair

Gov. Susana Martinez recently proclaimed October Disability Employment Awareness Month across the state, and UNM continued this spark of awareness with a job fair hosted by the Center for Development and Disability. The job fair catered to disabled individuals looking for work, and was followed a press conference held by CDD officially introducing Martinez’s latest initiative. "We're just trying to get, you know, more awareness that there are people with disabilities who are looking for jobs, who are capable of performing lots of different tasks, and are great employees," said Dr. Robert DelCampo, associate dean at the Anderson School of Management, and a member of the executive committee at the Partners for Employment group. "So just more opportunity and more exposure for them."

Trebel Music app aims directly for UNM user base

With all the new albums coming out this season, it’s hard for students to sort through them and decide which are worth spending hard-earned money on. Unfortunately, many students just can’t afford to buy all the music they want. That leaves them with three options: pay subscription fees for music streaming, use free downloaders and streaming services (which can work out well or end in disaster), or go without. Corey Jones, chief of product at M&M Media, Inc. said these options are inadequate to meet the desires of the students using them.

SFRB invites UNM students to review fee applications in October

The UNM Student Fee Review Board held its final hearings on Sunday to evaluate funding requests by different University bodies for the 2016-2017 fiscal year, and board members are asking students to participate in the final decision. Representatives of 29 units that have applied for student fee dollars, also known as Student Activities Mandatory Fees, presented their projects to the board members during the meeting. The board has received requests totaling a little over $19 million, SFRB officials said. The funding requests include about $585,000 for one-time applications, and about $18.5 million under recurring applications.

​UNM Announces Finalists for VP/AVP of Alumni Relations

Amy Wohlert, chief of staff for the President’s Office, announced the three finalists for vice president and associate vice president for UNM’s Alumni Association. Lynn Trojahn,vice president of Advancement at Accion New Mexico; Monica Armenta, executive director of Communication at APS; and Dana Allen, associate vice president for Alumni Relations and executive director of the Alumni Association at Old Dominion University are the top three candidates for the positions, according to a University press release.

Angie Alley, a speaking coach for TEDxABQ, will be speaking at StartUp School on Wednesday at 3 p.m. The event is hosted by FatPipe ABQ co-working space, located at 200 Broadway Blvd., according to a University release.

​UNM professor to study in nation’s capital

Kathy Powers, an associate professor of political science at UNM, was awarded the honor of studying at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington, D.C. over the summer, according to a UNM release. According to its website, the center “seeks to be the leading institution for in-depth research and dialogue to inform actionable ideas on global issues”, and is a “gathering place for some of the best and brightest scholars and experts from around the world.”

Shipping container shopping center to open this month

A new development built completely from shipping containers opened Friday, giving a unique face to the growing brewery scene in Albuquerque. The Green Jeans Farmery will offer a unique atmosphere and intends to focus on local business. “It consists of small, local, quality-driven tenants with a unique look,” said Green Jeans Farmery developer Roy Solomon. “The location right there off of I-40 and Carlisle offers good visibility and personality in the shape. It has an individual identity.”

Golf: Lobos come out with big win this weekend

The New Mexico men’s golf team dominated the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate event over the weekend. The Lobos didn’t waste any time jumping out to a 7-stroke lead after round 1, and posted a team score of 21-under for the first day. The Lobos led the scoring in all three rounds, and were the only team on the field to shoot better than par in each round. Head coach Glen Millican said he was pleased to see the team show such consistent play and patience throughout the weekend. In fact, each player posted at least one round under par in the tournament.

The haunting lengths that the human mind will go to to protect itself is the primary subject of Joshua Oppenheimer’s riveting new documentary, “The Look of Silence.” “The Look of Silence” serves as a companion film to Oppenheimer’s earlier film, “The Act of Killing,” which used a unique approach to bring to light the horrendous, but mostly unknown, events of the Indonesian genocide of 1965. The genocide was a result of the Indonesian military takeover of the government in response to anti-communist fervor brought on by propaganda.

Football: New Mexico finds its offensive footing

It didn’t take long for New Mexico to find its offensive identity on Saturday. UNM established its run game early, making several big plays on the way to a 38-28 win at Wyoming. It’s the first time that the Lobos won their Mountain West conference opener since 2005. The Lobos (2-2, 1-0 MW) had no problem running the ball against the Cowboys. UNM rushed 47 times for 302 yards, for an average of 6.4 yards per carry, including touchdown runs of 56 and 43 yards.

Volleyball: Nelson still seeking continuity at libero

New Mexico volleyball head coach Jeff Nelson’s search for a starting libero continued in Saturday’s 3-1 victory over Nevada. For the third consecutive game, Nelson has had to command a jersey swap in the middle of a match due to lackluster performances from the defensive position. UNM (8-6, 1-1 MW) has completed 14 games, but the Lobos can’t seem to find any sort of rhythm at libero.

Women's soccer: Lobos begin MW schedule with a pair of road wins

New Mexico's brutal nonconference slate may have set the women's soccer team up well for Mountain West play. The Lobos captured two road wins to start the conference schedule with a 1-0 victory at Utah State on Friday and a 2-1 decision over Boise State on Sunday. They are 2-0 in the MWC after completing a 2-5 nonconference mark, where all five losses came against teams in the Power Five conferences. "I thought Boise State was outstanding," Lobo head coach Heather Dyche said in a statement. "They keep the ball and they connect passes. In the first half they were a better team than we were, but in the second half we made some adjustments, played a little higher, and I think that disrupted them a bit."

LoboRESPECT center consolidates resources for victims on campus

On Friday afternoon the new LoboRESPECT advocacy center officially opened, the result of a two-year effort to provide a space for victims of sexual assault and hazing on campus. Dean of Students Tomás Aguirre, one of the driving forces behind the center, addressed a crowd of students, University administrators and student governing body representatives, thanking the student body for prioritizing the issue. “Think about some of the great movements of the past 100 years: the Vietnam War, apartheid – I think sexual violence is another one of those movements where we wouldn’t be where we’re at today if the students hadn’t taken more of an activist role,” he said.
