ASUNM voted down a resolution asking for the student government to support immigration reform in New Mexico. The decision came Friday after a discussion about whether the resolution should be passed in its current state.
Editor, One of the human rights guaranteed to American citizens under the First Amendment to the United States Constitution is “prohibiting the petitioning for a governmental redress of grievances.” Even though we live in a republic, and we don’t have democracy by ballot, the right to petition the government is fundamental as a means of protecting public participation in government, especially in this age of apathy.

No. 6 Florida proved to be as tough as advertised when the defending national champions shut out New Mexico 4-0 on Sunday. The Gators scored early in the first half when junior midfielder Lauren Smith took a shot that found the left corner of the goal, beating the Lobo’s diving goalkeeper Cassie Ulrich.
The UNM men’s soccer team earned two wins in California over the weekend, the team announced. UNM beat San Deigo 2-0 on Sunday with Oniel Fisher scoring the first goal of the game off of a rebound in the 52nd minute, according to golobos.com.
More Hispanic students are returning for their sophomore year than ever in UNM history. University President Bob Frank announced on Friday that the retention rate of Hispanic students going into their third semester is 80.1 percent.
Fabian Carbajal said he planned to spend his Saturday afternoon studying for an upcoming test, but a series of events changed his plans. In hopes to spread passion for soccer, the Albuquerque Sol, a Premier Development League soccer team, brought 37 international soccer legends to University Stadium for a friendly exhibition match called the International Legend’s Cup.
UNM-sponsored tailgating parties have received criticism from the press, and the people in charge of the events are defending them as fun, safe celebrations of school spirit. A recent story from KRQE News 13 highlighted drinking and partying at a tailgate two weeks ago, but Drew Ingraham, assistant athletics director for marketing and revenue, said the criticism was overblown and the scenes were taken out of context.
UNM is struggling to bring faculty salaries up to par with peer institutions around the country. The University is finding it difficult to compete for highly qualified faculty in the national market because of budgetary restrictions, which in turn is affecting the quality of education on campus, according to documents from UNM’s Finance Committee.

J.D. accuses Israel of “purposely targeting” U.N. schools and shelters without realizing that Hamas bases its military operations in urban areas, purposely allowing its citizens to be injured and killed in order to score a propaganda victory.
With the addition of sand volleyball to its athletics slate, UNM hopes to draw more attention to the sport. The school announced Tuesday the sport will be added for spring 2014, making sand volleyball the 22nd intercollegiate team at UNM. It is the first new sports program since women’s soccer was added in 1993.
An organization on campus is reaching out to help students find a balance between college life and responsibility. The Campus Office of Substance Abuse Prevention, which seeks to educate students on the dangers of drugs and alcohol rather than recommending complete abstinence, has started a new program called Diary of a Lady Lobo, aimed at curbing risky drinking in female students at UNM, John Steiner, COSAP program manager said.

Following a three game losing streak, the New Mexico volleyball team has now aligned its focus on finishing games off strong. UNM (2-4) was unable to come out of the Paradise Tour tournament with a victory over the No. 22 Hawaii, St. John's or No. 18 Oregon.
Editor, As the nation recalls the 9-11 on its 13th anniversary, we all should pause to reflect on the fragility of our own morality. Also, we should join across religious and political lines to condemn acts of violence against peaceful citizens, not only in the United States, but all across this planet that we human beings call home.
The University of New Mexico women’s soccer hosts Loyola-Chicago in its home opener on Friday night. This will be UNM’s first home game since a hazing incident that occurred on Aug. 17 hazing incident involving the entire team.
It’s a typical classroom: a chalkboard spans the front wall, green felt covers a five-foot table, cards are distributed and a wager is placed. The games begin.
