Women's Basketball: Broncos take game in OT

With two clutch threes to tie the game at the end of regulation, it seemed as though New Mexico women’s basketball team’s close-game misfortunes were about to come to an end. The Lobos were able to dig themselves out of a hole and send the game into overtime with all of the momentum.

Men's Basketball: Lobos lose at last second

The New Mexico men’s basketball team will have to wait to catch San Diego State in the Mountain West standings. The league-leading Aztecs lost on Tuesday night at Wyoming 68-62, giving the Lobos an opportunity to tie SDSU if they won Wednesday night at Boise State.

Engineering dean ousted

By next week, UNM’s School of Engineering will seek new leadership. This week, UNM Provost Chaouki Abdallah said he had decided to relieve current engineering Dean Catalin Roman of his position. “I decided to replace him due to a divergence of opinions on changing direction for the school of engineering,” Abdallah said.

On Friday afternoon, police responded to a call regarding potential misconduct, said UNMPD Public Information Officer Tim Stump. A female student was studying in Mesa Vista Hall, when an East-Indian man came up to her and asked for directions. After she gave them to him, he held out his hand and gave her a kiss on the cheek.

Term ‘illegal’ raises furor

A UNM organization insists that the use of the term “illegal” in reference to people offends certain students on campus. Ramiro Rodriguez, “our-storian” and finance chair for MEChA de UNM, said he is opposed to people using the term “illegal” when referring to undocumented immigrants.

Local alternative band Sweet Weapons is going on tour this week through Arizona and California, having kicked things off in Albuquerque at the Gasworks Sunday night. “It’s like a short little run,” said drummer Jake Lang. “It’s just a week of mostly California shows.

Innovate ABQ plan moving ahead

Despite a delay with the regents’ vote on Innovate ABQ at a meeting in December, the project continues to progress. At the first UNM Board of Regents meeting of this semester Tuesday, UNM Director of Real Estate Thomas Neale told the regents that project leaders and various city institutions are setting up an environmental agreement deal with the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway Co.

On Feb. 2, an officer was dispatched to the Chama building in the Casas del Rio complex in response to a reported burglary. Roommates living in a double room told police that they had left their room door open slightly while one was taking a shower and one was in the bathroom.

Drug use takes hit in NM

A new survey suggests drug and alcohol use among New Mexico college students isn’t as high as it was five years ago. The New Mexico Higher Education Prevention Consortium released the results of an annual survey measuring the prevalence of alcohol and drug use among the state’s university students.
