Lobo Spotlight: Shayla King

Associated Students of the University of New Mexico Senator Shayla King said the undergraduate student senate could use more minority members. “At this point, I feel there is a fair amount of diversity,” she said. “I feel like we can use more. I feel like we should have at least another male African American senator. That would help a lot.”

Recently I had lunch with an elderly friend. I’ll call her Elaine. As we chatted over our salads, Elaine told me about a trip she took over the holidays to visit her sister and brother-in-law in Minnesota. Unfortunately, they got into a huge fight, the visit was a disaster and she left angry.

Suicide is a difficult but necessary subject to discuss, and one that has become a topic of concern on campus. According to the national Suicide Prevention Resource Center website, about seven out of every 100,000 college students will commit suicide before graduation.

UNMH ferries newly uninsured to Medicaid

Due to changes brought about by the Affordable Care Act, otherwise known as Obamacare, the UNM Hospital has decided to extend the availability of the UNM Care Program for another year. At a UNMH Board of Directors meeting on Friday, UNMH CEO Steve McKernan said thousands of New Mexicans were affected by the Affordable Care Act.

GPSA: unblocking tuition was unwise

The graduate student government made a case for re-blocking tuition on Thursday. At a UNM Board of Regents’ Academic Student Affairs and Research Committee meeting, Matthew Rush, chief of staff of the Graduate and Professional Student Association, presented a recommendation to provide fixed tuition rates for students taking 12 credit hours or more.

The Copenhagen Zoo put down Marius, a healthy two-year-old giraffe, on Sunday in front of an audience to prevent inbreeding of giraffes in the facility. Zoo staff killed Marius using a bolt pistol and skinned him in front of the crowd before feeding his carcass to the zoo’s lions, according to the Associated Press.

A Chicago mother was charged with suffocating her 3-week-old daughter to collect a $200,000 insurance payment to pay for her gambling addiction. Six elderly people were robbed and murdered in Louisiana because the killer was addicted to video poker.

Football: Davie receives 27 National Letters of Intent

It appears that the New Mexico football team can now compete in the recruiting game. The 2014 recruiting class for the Lobos highlights that fact. UNM received 27 National Letters of Intent last week, and head coach Bob Davie said the Lobos were able to beat out Arizona, Arizona State, Boston College and California University for some of their new talent.

Men's Soccer: Three ABQ natives among UNM signees

Justin Hix knew at an early age that he wanted to play college soccer for New Mexico, like his dad Jason did in the early ‘90s. Now not only does he have his dad’s connections to the school, the younger Hix has joined a recruiting class featuring his friends and club teammates CJ Slough and David Gros.

New Mexico placed seven skiers on the podium and ran away with the 2014 Jade Enterprises UNM Invitational this weekend in Red River. The Lobos captured 655 points to take the team title. Colorado amassed 588.5 points for second place, followed by Denver with 574.5

Wolf bronze statues are dangerous, use people

Editor, Recently I have begun to notice the alarming proliferation of a number of life-sized, bronze statues of wolves, all around campus — near the Duck Pond, Zimmerman Library, and elsewhere — and I am alarmed at how I fear this might affect the safety of our school.
