Expanding into space requires human risks

Editor, A creeping sensation of inevitable failure follows every conversation about space. We’ve been to the moon. We’ve sent multiple complex systems to Mars. Obviously, we sent the wrong thing, because we’re not there. Every effort to establish a sustainable system outside our planet has failed.

Rights debates merit consistency

We’ve all been hearing the same gun control arguments based on the Second Amendment for years. One of them is that because the definition of “firearm” has been so completely distanced from what the Founders had in mind when they drafted the Bill of Rights, the sweeping controls on guns of all types currently being debated should be allowed; that because the Founders had no idea what guns would become, the Second Amendment should be considered outdated.

Peaceful resolution not considered after 9/11

Editor, It is said that unless we learn from it, history tends to repeat itself. The terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 claimed the lives of nearly 3,000 Americans. In response, the Global War on Terror, with major battle fronts being fought in Afghanistan and Iraq, have caused 66,000 American casualties and a total of over $3.1 trillion in expenditures with no definitive success in sight.

Football: Defensive coordinator named

On Saturday, New Mexico head football coach Bob Davie announced that inside linebackers coach Kevin Cosgrove is to be the team’s new defensive coordinator. “Defensively, ‘Cos’ and I think a lot alike,” Davie told the Albuquerque Journal. “I can’t wait to see his personality reflected in our defense.”

Little-known lit hit shelves this winter

December and January had an impressive number of great book releases that probably went more-or-less unnoticed by students preparing for, taking and then relaxing after finals. Good books should never be ignored, so here’s a highlight of the book releases that may have been overlooked during the semester break.

Men's Basketball: Lobos take Mountain West opener

New Mexico withstood a 25-point effort from Colorado State over a six-minute span to claim an 80-73 win in Saturday’s Mountain West Conference opener. The Lobos (10-3, 1-0 MW) carried a 63-48 lead to the 5:51 mark before the Rams outscored 25-17 down the stretch, an issue Craig Neal said that must be addressed. That 15-point edge was the widest margin in the game.

The Albuquerque Fire Department responded to a “bush fire” in the area in front of George Pearl Hall late Friday afternoon. AFD public information officer Melissa Romero said authorities, who arrived at the scene at about 4:30 p.m., were able to contain the petite blaze in about 15 minutes. She said the incident was “nothing major,” and that the building, which houses UNM’s architecture department, was n

Book Review: Conclusion to "Whom the God would Destroy" unsatisfying

Every now and then, an author comes along who captivates readers with strong writing and captivating storylines…and then ends the story so poorly that readers close the book feeling betrayed and somewhat empty. That’s how Brian Hodge left me feeling with “Whom the Gods would Destroy.” I finished the book days ago, but I’m still smarting over the end.

Demetrius Walker greeted his former New Mexico teammates with hugs before Monday’s game at The Pit. Before the opening tipoff, Walker and Lobo guard Kendall Williams exchanges some light trash talking and grins. UNM spoiled Walker’s return to Albuquerque with an 80-68 victory in the Lobos’ nonconference finale. Walker played at New Mexico from 2011-13 after a redshirt year. New Mexico became the 17th state in the nation to allow same-sex marriages on Thursday. After months of deliberation, the state Supreme Court ruled unanimously that the state government “is constitutionally required to allow same-gender couples to marry and must extend to them the rights, protections and responsibilities that derive from civil marriage under New Mexico law.”

Book Review: Latest Xanth novel is heavily sexist

As a teen, I loved Piers Anthony’s Xanth novels. Magical creatures, happy endings and an entire world powered by puns – it was the perfect place for a budding nerd to spend her afternoons. “Board Stiff” is the 38th book in Anthony’s popular series and marks 36 years of the fantasy author’s life spent cranking out pun after pun. Sadly, it’s not very good.
