Lobos hope to run the table in trip to UNLV

In Las Vegas, why wouldn't the dice tell the story? For craps players, what are the two numbers you don't want to see on the come-out roll? Two and 12, of course ? which, by the way, is UNM's record at the Thomas and Mack Center. "We know this is going to be monumental task," head coach Steve Alford said.

High-flying duo help put the lid on NMSU

It was the "Hustle and Flow" show at The Pit on Tuesday against in-state rival NMSU, but there was no Terrence Howard. Instead, the two star performers were Roman Martinez and Tony Danridge. Martinez said Danridge's flow - that high-flying energy Danridge brings to the table - sends The Pit into a frenzy.

Lobos down Aggies, 68-66, for first sweep since 2004

LAS CRUCES ? Easy come, easy go. It took six games into the season for NMSU to lose at home ? and four years for the UNM men's basketball team to sweep the season series. Now it's over. On Tuesday, for the first time since 2004, the Lobos beat the Aggies, 68-66, at the Pan American Center in Las Cruces.

Danridge powers Lobos over Aggies, 76-62

Sleigh bells rang, and more than 17,000 fans at The Pit were listening Tuesday. Through the lane, Tony Danridge was whistling past NMSU defenders and helping elevate the UNM men's basketball team to a 76-62 win over the Aggies. Danridge torched the Aggies for 22 points on 8-of-10 shooting.

Show introduces youths to professional art world

"Urbane Expo" will showcase emerging artists under 21 with a black-tie-optional night of performance, music and art. "It has a dual meaning," organizer Amy Dalness said. "You think 'urban,' like street, city, kind of hip - urban has a lot of meanings. But 'urbane' means kind of refined and sophisticated.

IDEA form gets lukewarm reception

UNM's new course-evaluation forms are getting mixed reviews from students and faculty. The ICES evaluation forms have been replaced by Individual Development and Educational Assessment forms, which are used at universities across the country. Sophomore Kelsey Carrillo said she remembers the ICES as a more effective way to evaluate courses.

Martinez's perseverance helps dampen Rebels' top talent

Roman Martinez was one of the most beloved Lobos in The Pit on Saturday. "Ro Martinez, Ro Martinez," Section 26 chanted incessantly. Against the Ole Miss defense, Martinez helped UNM improve to 6-4 with a 103-70 victory over the Rebels. For the second straight game, the junior forward from El Paso, Texas, had a standout effort for the UNM men's basketball team.

Hiring freeze raises questions about success of students

Lock-down D puts Lobos over UNLV, 75-49

Triple-doubles are rare events that deserve celebratatory champagne - if the player is of age. This triple-double, however, will likely be forgettable for UNLV's Shamela Hapton, as it was one of the wrong sort. "I thought we did a pretty good job on Hampton - bothering her with the double team," head coach Don Flanagan said.

Faculty, infrastructure more important than new coach

Editor, I wish to thank the University again for showing us how out of touch with the community it really is. The news of a recent hiring this week of a football coach for zillions of dollars when we have temp employees terrified they will not be able to pay mortgages and insurance payments as of the first of the year is shocking.

Amanda Adamson glides past a Red Raider defender. Adamson recorded her first career double-double, with 10 points and 20 rebounds.

Adamson finds constancy at UNM

From turmoil to stability, Amanda Adamson's odd 10-point, 20-rebound performance on Saturday against Texas Tech is emblematic of what she's experienced in the past. In one word, her basketball career has been peculiar. Keith Cieplicki, who recruited Adamson to play for Syracuse, resigned in June 2006 after a short and tumultuous tenure with the Orange.

Admins create ethical void by trying to justify high pay

Editor, Those who fret over UNM President David Schmidly's $587,000 salary may not know of what it consists. Wardrobe needs alone draw $95,000, which includes the cost of designing and tailoring presentable suits of Kevlar (cut resistance) and Nomex (fireproofing) - essential against peasant-wielded pitchforks and torches.

'Day' stumbles on bad cast, terrible plot

They did it again. Once more, Hollywood has remade a great film into a steaming pile of horse crap. The latest victim is "The Day the Earth Stood Still." We should have seen this coming. The first sign that something foul was afoot came when they cast Keanu "Wooden Face" Reeves in the starring role of Klaatu, and it only gets worse from there.

Beggin, Adamson help Lobos snatch win over Texas Tech

It wasn't the prettiest win, but the UNM women's basketball team pulled away in the second half to improve to 8-1 with a 63-54 win over Big 12 foe Texas Tech on Saturday. The Lobos came out hot and stormed to a 9-0 lead with 15:16 left in the first half, but the Red Raiders stormed back with a 10-0 run to take a 10-9 lead with 9:40 to go.

Lobos outrun Rebels, subdue leading duo

Jaded, or perhaps just unimpressed by Ole Miss' David Huertas and Chris Warren, students in Section 26 of The Pit let the two know what they thought of the tandem during pre-game introductions on Saturday. "Who's that?" the bunch chanted, nonchalantly reading newspapers.
