Editor, I am writing today to congratulate UNM's fraternities for raising money for donations and completing philanthropy. On Nov. 12, the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity raised more than $600 that will be donated to the American Cancer Society for cancer research.

Editor, President David Schmidly's proposed smoking ban for the UNM campus is another poor decision in the continued vilification of smokers nationwide. Ever since the report released by the EPA in 1992, anti-smoking activists have been trying to ban smoking and limit smokers' rights under the guise of public health.
Editor, To me, UNM is a place that is supposed to foster an enlightened and tolerant society. If so, Andres Saenz has missed that part of his education. Why is he so narrow-minded, intolerant and hostile toward gay men? I don't know Saenz, but when he wrote that Don Schrader is "an overtly gay man," I don't think he meant it as a compliment to Schrader or any other gay man.

Forget a barn burner. When the UNM women's basketball team took on DePaul on Monday, the entire Pit nearly caught fire. And not just with excitement - though there was plenty of that. UNM improved to 3-0 on the year, as Amy Beggin proved to be a savior with her last-second layup that propelled the Lobos to a 68-66 victory.

Editor, We, as students, are held to a rigorous standard of academic honesty when performing our coursework, and by that standard, the merits of our work are made unique. The question that every student should begin to ask, however, is to what academic standard of integrity are our instructors held, and how is it enforced and acted upon? When we submit coursework, it can be scrutinized at so many levels to determine whether there is a modicum of plagiarism, if we have falsified results or if in any way we have provided material that is of lesser integrity than the standard requires.
The UNM women's basketball team collected win No. 200 at The Pit against the Idaho State Bengals on Sunday. UNM entered Sunday's matchup with a combined record of 29-11 against teams from the Big Sky Conference. And thanks to a 77-43 whitewash over Idaho State, the Lobos improved to 30-11.
Editor, It was troubling to read that Joy Harjo wanted to continue grafting taxes from our citizens and suckling on our tuitions despite her refusal to continue educating us. Just because she found it unbearable to work in an environment that promotes personal freedom doesn't justify her attempt to steal money from the public coffers.

Rose Chavez, a UNM alumna who organized the Lobo Growers Market, has been controversially removed from her position as coordinator of the market. As a result, the Oct. 21 market was canceled. Chavez said she was fired when Bruce Milne, executive director of Sustainability Studies, and Terry Horger, program manager of Sustainability Studies, said she wasn't performing to their expectations.

A line of protesters stretching two blocks marched through Downtown Albuquerque on Saturday to oppose California's gay marriage ban. Dozens of people assembled in Civic Plaza before the march, brandishing signs with slogans such as, "You don't have to be gay to believe in equal rights," "Fight the H8," and "Better gay than grumpy.
