Freeze should be placed on VPs' salaries, not professors'

Editor, Freezing hiring and salaries is just great. I wonder why it is always this way. Why would you freeze salaries just months after UNM hired so many vice presidents? President David Schmidly, why don't you tell the new VPs they shouldn't come to work because we don't have money for their salaries? Couldn't you tell them that with their salaries a good number of professors could get a little increase in theirs? What's next - increasing tuition? Increasing the football coach's salary? Or maybe what's next is a millionaire investment to renovate The Pit.

UNM needs to solve problems by addressing them directly

Editor, President David Schmidly, you've been the man in charge of keeping this University running for more than a year now, and I don't have to tell you how important first impressions are for such a big job. Since last October, you have begun running UNM less like a university and more like a corporation.

Group inspires collective energy, purpose

Self-proclaimed rap nerd Slug, of the music group Atmosphere, said going to a hip-hop show is similar to going to church or Alcoholics Anonymous. "In a weird way, when you can get a room full of people to laugh together or throw their hands and wave them around together, that's as close as some of these people get to church," Slug said.

ASUNM candidates prepare for upcoming elections

Election season continues locally as the Associated Students of UNM has 10 open Senate seats up for a vote Nov. 19. But the student government elections aren't drawing nearly as much attention as those of Nov. 4. ASUNM introduced more than 20 candidates Monday to an empty SUB Atrium.

Arson suspected in second Telos fire

UNM Police are investigating another case of suspected arson on campus, as a fire damaged the basement of the Telos House on Sunday morning, Lt. Pat Davis said. The first fire at the Telos House, on Las Lomas Road and Yale Boulevard, occurred in August, also in the basement.

Schmidly's actions won't give professors a reason to stay

Editor, As a UNM student, I am appalled and disappointed in President David Schmidly's decision to, among other things, halt the hiring and pay increases of professors. There are alternative ways of saving money. Other universities, like Florida International University, are successfully exploring a four-day college week.

The Console Wars

There are too many damn games coming out this month. It is a constant avalanche of quality gaming that is taxing the budget of even the most financially solvent players. Take, for example, the forthcoming "Mirror's Edge" ($59.99). This game sells itself just through the short demo that was released on Xbox Live and PSN.

Regents need to use common sense for hiring, spending

Editor, Despite a spending and hiring freeze across the University and the distinct possibility that once again staff and faculty will receive no salary increase, the regents and President David Schmidly's overpaid administration feel it's OK to go ahead with the renovation of The Pit because the money comes from a different source.

Staff raises should take priority over renovation of The Pit

Editor, President David Schmidly, I am extremely pissed and disillusioned to hear that The Pit will be renovated to a tune of $60 million when you have been sending us all these e-mails about how there are going to be budget cuts and, more importantly, you have asked staff to forego raises this year.

Column: Abortion a modern-day injustice

I have often asked myself this question: If I lived during the time of legalized slavery, would I have recognized that slavery was unjust and opposed it, or would I have accepted it as part of normal, everyday life? As the saying goes, hindsight is 20-20. Americans recognize that slavery was unjust.

Guard brings shooting savvy to court

It's no wonder his number is 33. Whenever the UNM men's basketball team is in dire need of a 3-point field goal, all head coach Steve Alford has to do is draw up a double-screen play for Chad Toppert. The sharp-shooting guard does the rest, nimbly navigating through a maze of picks.

Building to win

This season might be a rebuilding year, but the UNM women's basketball team has history on its side. For the past 11 seasons, there hasn't been much to cry about - or, for that matter, in the last 13 seasons under head coach Don Flanagan. UNM enters this season looking to capture its sixth Mountain West Conference title in the last seven seasons.
