Out-of-state student? Vote absentee

Out-of-state students may not be able to vote if they don't apply for an absentee ballot from their home state this month. If students register before then, they will be able to receive their absentee ballots in time to send them in and have their votes counted.

Study groups in libraries should not distract others

Editor, I am sick and tired of people wandering into the main reading room of Zimmerman Library for group study sessions, or worse, sitting and carrying out meaningless banter while I try to study or write. What is the first thing any elementary school student learns when she first enters a library? Libraries are quiet places.

UNM improves sustainability standing

Students worry about grades, but they may not realize the University is worried about its own report card. UNM, along with other universities in the U.S. and Canada, is graded by the College Sustainability Report Card. This year, in the Mountain West Conference, UNM came in fourth place out of nine schools, with an overall B in sustainability - an improvement from last year's C.

Mitchell Hall will be closed for renovations

Don't plan on taking any classes in Mitchell Hall this spring. The building will close for renovations in January and won't reopen until the end of the fall 2009 semester. Melissa Vargas, strategic planner for the Provost's Office, said millions of University dollars will be spent on modernizing Mitchell Hall for students and faculty.

Udall will work for NM, the country

Before I explain why I think you should vote for Rep. Tom Udall for Senate in November, I would like to dispel a couple myths about voting. Myth: It doesn't matter whom you vote for, as long as you vote. Truth: It matters very much whom you vote for. Different candidates will do vastly different things when they are in office, and those things obviously matter.

Lobo quarterback Donovan Porterie suffered a season-ending injury at Tulsa. But wide receiver Chris Hernandez said Porterie has one of the most positive attitudes he's seen.

Porterie keeps head up, focuses on recovering

While Donovan Porterie was studying film on the Tulsa Golden Hurricane, his family was busy preparing for Hurricane Ike. Porterie, a Port Arthur, Texas, native, said his family was affected by the storm that whipped across the Texas coastline. "They had a mandatory evacuation two or three days before the Tulsa game," Porterie said.

"We executed our game plan and moved the ball around well," head coach Jeff Nelson said.

Health center raises fees to counter cost increases

Students may now have to pay more for a visit to the Student Health and Counseling Center. The center raised the cost of some services because of reduced funding from the Student Fee Review Board. SHAC director Beverly Kloeppel said rising health care costs also contributed to the fee hike.

Iron and Wine frontman Sam Beam was visibly nervous when he stepped under the blue and white lights before a raucous crowd Tuesday night. Beam took a seat and stared, squinting at the audience for a moment, a bit hesitant to start, while a roar of applause beat off the walls of Popejoy Hall.

Palin's experience makes her qualified to be vice president

Editor, I want to give a brief response to Jason Darensburg's outrageously ignorant letter about Sarah Palin. He viciously calls her a woman who hates women and loves war, but how can Palin be a misogynist if she's a member of Feminists for Life of America, which is America's largest pro-life feminist organization? The organization describes itself as shaped by the core feminist values of justice, nondiscrimination and nonviolence.

Drag kings, queens perform for charities

This year's Sinatra DeVine charity drag show, "Teaze," is a dance-heavy production. "We have 150 people who are performing onstage, not getting a cent," co-founder and drag performer P.J. Sedillo said. "They pay for their own costumes, their set designs. It's a great opportunity to give back.

Loving 'freedom and family' doesn't mean aborting fetuses

Editor, "Those of us who love freedom and family must continue to fight for reproductive rights." Since when did love of the family include elimination of its youngest member? The opinion that abortion is a woman's right has changed dramatically in recent years since science via ultrasounds has proven what conservatives have known all along.

Pundits should question Palin's strengths, not weaknesses

Editor, I am a Barack Obama supporter. I have read several letters in the Daily Lobo about Sarah Palin and agree with many of the points that have been made. Yet, there are some mistakes pundits and Democrats make when criticizing her. What I believe is a poor argument of criticizing Palin is the issue of foreign policy experience.

Play offers creative take on 'Frankenstein' story

UNM's theatre and dance department is doing "Frankenstein" in an unusual vein. "It's pretty much reality times 10, 100 percent of the time," actor Starnes Reveley said, who plays the unloved creature from Mary Shelley's book. "Everyone's screaming and crying and drooling and laughing hysterically.

Retirement plans give UNM staff options for planning future

As Wall Street gets more erratic, UNM employees are paying closer attention to their University-sponsored retirement plans. According to the University's human resources Web site, employees have two retirement options: a defined-contribution plan (Alternative Retirement Plan or ARP) or a defined-benefits plan through the Educational Retirement Board (a pension plan or ERB).

Many UNM alumni who were involved with the Christian Legal Society now practice law professionally, she said.
