Student rock climber spotlighted on TV series

One of UNM's students is a nationally recognized rock climbing champion. Sophomore Page Brown was featured on the TV series "The Real Winning Edge" on My50-TV on Sunday. She was named national champion for females aged 18 to 19 in rock climbing in the summer of 2007.

The details of donating eggs, sperm

Students' eggs and sperm can fetch a high price in the marketplace. But the harvesting process is not as fast and easy as some might think. Egg donors can make about $5,000 per donation, according to Reproductive Resolutions, a national company that provides information about egg donation.

Donating plasma helps students, recipients

Students looking for a way to make money for the holidays might consider donating plasma. Ladonnica Eddings, senior medical receptionist at ZLB Plasma, said donors can earn up to $210 in their first month. The donation process is complicated and can take two to four hours, she said.

Passing Mil Levy will provide funds to UNMH

The 6.4 Mil Levy has been in place since 1954 and is up for reauthorization every eight years. The levy provided about $75 million from property taxes to UNM Hospital last year. Billy Sparks, executive director of communications and marketing for the Health Sciences Center, said the levy helps pay for crucial equipment at the hospital.

Committee petitions for upgraded recreation center

In 2007, UNM received $12.5 million from an institutional bond for classroom modernizations, but students are petitioning to use the money for Johnson Center. ASUNM President Ashley Fate said the Student Housing and Recreation Committee is exploring options for updating the center, a plan President David Schmidly supports.

Mitchell Hall will be closed for renovations

Don't plan on taking any classes in Mitchell Hall this spring. The building will close for renovations in January and won't reopen until the end of the fall 2009 semester. Melissa Vargas, strategic planner for the Provost's Office, said millions of University dollars will be spent on modernizing Mitchell Hall for students and faculty.

From the academy to the community (Video)

The Maxwell Museum opened the Ortiz Center Gathering Space on Friday, which intends to make anthropology more accessible to UNM students and community members. "In public anthropology, we take anthropology out of the academy and into the community," said Elena Ortiz, daughter of the late Alfonso Ortiz, for whom the center is named.

UNM doctor to speak about life experiences, book

David Sklar faced the impossible: suturing wounds, delivering babies and attending the sick of a rural Mexican village in the '70s - and then he went to Stanford Medical School. Sklar, now associate dean of graduate medical education at UNM, will talk about his recently published book, La Clinica: A Doctor's Journey Across Borders, at the National Hispanic Cultural Center tonight.

Center celebrates natural healing

Kalpulli Izkalli, a center for natural healing, held its third annual Traditional Medicine and Healing Gathering on Saturday. Natural and traditional healers from across the country gathered at the Westside Community Center to participate in healing exercises.
