Prospective United stadium brings mixed emotions

As New Mexico United continues its search for a permanent home to host games, surrounding businesses and homeowners look towards the incoming crowds and form their gameplan. Currently, the City hopes to lease seven acres of land at Balloon Fiesta Park where New Mexico United would be able to build their stadium. The stadium itself would be funded privately and the team would be required to put down $30 million for it to be built, according to the City’s website. Jeff Jinnett, owner of the brewery La Reforma, spoke about his excitement surrounding the possibility of a new stadium.

No body-cam footage from UNMPD

A 2020 New Mexico statute – which requires most law enforcement agencies to use and have policies on body-worn cameras – may exempt the University of New Mexico Police Department. The statute says officers who regularly interact with the public and are employed by law enforcement agencies should wear body-worn cameras while on duty. It defines a “law enforcement agency” as “the police department of a municipality, the sheriff's office of a county, the New Mexico state police or the department of public safety,” not explicitly including university police departments. UNMPD officers undergo training at the New Mexico Department of Public Safety Police Academy, according to UNMPD’s website.

Public libraries provide community space for NaNoWriMo participants

National Novel Writing Month – shortened to NaNoWriMo – is a global event that takes place every November. It challenges participants to write 50,000 words of a novel before the end of the month, according to the city of Rio Rancho’s website. On Sunday, Nov. 12, the Rio Rancho Public Library hosted a write-in for NaNoWriMo at The HUB. NaNoWriMo offers numerous virtual events to help writers reach their goals, and some local libraries provide a physical space for writers to share in the joys – and frustrations – of writing a novel, Bentley Clark said – local librarian, event host and NaNoWriMo winner aid.

Cross country: Lobos on the national stage

The University of New Mexico men’s cross country team finished third at the Mountain Region Championships on Nov. 10 to qualify for the NCAA Championship. The women’s team finished seventh. In his first collegiate 10K, Habtom Samuel won the Mountain Region individual championship with a time of 28:57.6. Samuel, along with Evans Kiplagat and Lukas Kiprop, all finished within the top four to receive All-Region honors. “We’re fearless. We’ve got … seven incredible athletes. They’re all running really well but three will look to be All-Americans,” Darren Gauson said — UNM’s head coach.

Men’s basketball: A nail-biting win in New Mexico

The men’s basketball team defeated University of Texas at Arlington 82-80 on Thursday, Nov. 16. The Lobos beat the Mavericks at home with a Donovan Dent buzzer-beater to go to 2-1 on the season. UT Arlington now stands at 2-1. Jamal Mashburn Jr. scored 29 total points, shooting 9-23 from the field. He found himself at the charity stripe often with 13 attempts and nine makes. He shot half of the Lobos’ total free throws. Along with a layup buzzer-beater, Dent had a career-high 25 points along with five assists, two steals and a block.

Spring Senatorial & Presidential elections combined in Constitutional amendment

Last week, Associated Students at the University of New Mexico held its fall elections with a total of 308 student votes cast. The results included the passing of Constitutional Amendment 1. The amendment “amends Article VII, Sec. 2 and 3 combining the Spring Senatorial elections with the President/Vice presidential elections,” as stated on the ballot. The final vote was 168 for, 66 against, 70 abstaining. The change in the amendment was originally presented during ASUNM’s full Senate meetings earlier this semester via bills 9F and 10F. These two bills would have worked together to amend Article VII Sec. 2 and 3. Both bills failed the Senate’s roll-call vote 6-14-0-0.

Football: Mistakes were made

The Lobos lost to the University of Nevada, Las Vegas Rebels 56-14 on Saturday, Nov. 4. University of New Mexico fell to a 3-6 record; the team will have to win their final three games to remain bowl eligible. On special teams, the Lobos gave up a combined 206 yards on punt and kick returns – leading to excellent field position for UNLV's offense on a majority of their drives. Head Coach Danny Gonzales said that is what cost them the game.

Women’s Basketball: Lobos win 65-55 at home

The women’s basketball team beat the Tarleton State Texans 64-55 on Sunday, Nov. 12. It was their third game of the season and they remain undefeated with a 3-0 record. The Texans fell to a 1-2 record. University of New Mexico led for 39:21 and survived a disastrous fourth quarter where they saw a 20-point lead shrink to eight, however they executed late to protect the lead and earn the win.

City Council abolishes & significantly alters Air Quality Control Board

The Albuquerque City Council approved an ordinance and resolution Nov. 8 to abolish the current Albuquerque-Bernalillo Air Quality Control Board and recreate it with substantial changes. The Boardu2019s purpose is to maintain air quality standards put forth by the Air Quality Control Act by adopting, amending or repealing regulations with City Council approval, the Ordinance sponsored by Councilor Dan Lewis, states.

Opinion: The Guild has plenty to offer

In recent years, New Mexico has become a hotspot for filmmaking. More than ever before, opportunities for filming locations and industry programs have opened up and drawn in filmmakers – locally and globally. As the University of New Mexico’s film department continues to grow, students should be aware of the incredible opportunities at their disposal to expand their knowledge of film. The Guild Theater in Albuquerque has been operating for nearly 60 years and they continue to provide a space for auteurs to premiere their work as well as conduct special screenings. There is no specific film the Guild screens, but their unpredictable nature keeps their productions fresh and exciting.

Volleyball: Lobos fall in four to Fresno but win senior day against Nevada

The Fresno State Bulldogs beat the Lobos 3-1 (25-23, 25-22, 18-25, 25-20) at home on Thursday, Nov. 9. Going into the game, the Lobos, the Bulldogs and the Colorado State Rams were in a three-way tie for second place in the Mountain West Conference. This was University of New Mexicou2019s second loss against the Bulldogs this season. The Lobos are now 10-6 in conference and 18-9, and are currently tied for second place in the conference. With two games left in the season, the Lobos need to win one to clinch a spot in the conference tournament.

Men’s basketball: Lobos split games in opening week

The Lobos had their first game of the season at home at The Pit against the Southern Texas Tigers and took home a dominant win on Monday, Nov. 6. The game started off evenly, but was quickly taken over for a 92-55 win. Then on Nov. 9, the Lobos lost to 72-58 against #23 ranked St. Maryu2019s. The Lobos were without their star guard Jaelen House for the game due to injury. In the first game of the season, the Lobos had four players in double-digit scoring with a very balanced offense.

LETTER: An open letter from UNM law students in support of Palestine

We, concerned students, faulty and community members associated with the University of New Mexico, stand unapologetically and unequivocally in solidarity with the Palestinian civilians and their on-going struggle against Israeli settler colonialism. We recognize the suffering of Israelis that have lost their lives and loved ones as a result of this on-going violence, as well as the experiences of those that have suffered antisemitic and Islamophobic violence as a response to the actions of the Israeli government. However, the time has come for us to hold perpetrators and supporters of genocide accountable for their actions and inactions.

Continuing to demand for ceasefire and a facilitation of discourse

Protesters blocked three lanes on Central Avenue early Thursday afternoon after congregating in Zimmerman Plaza in solidarity with Palestinians. Students walked out of class and demanded a ceasefire on their march through campus and Central to support the freedom of Palestine, demanding that the ongoing conflict in Gaza cease.

ASUNM passes recently tabled Bill 19F

The Associated Students at the University of New Mexico passed the previously tabled Bill 19F during the Nov. 8 full Senate meeting. Bill 19F will place restrictions on senators when submitting appropriations and was originally tabled at the end of the Oct. 25 full Senate meeting. After the initial tabling and further discussion at the most recent meeting, the bill passed with a final vote of 12-2-4-2 (yes-no-abstain-absent). The bill itself will prohibit senators from having their names listed on appropriations for non-ASUNM organizations that are submitted to the student government.

Two N.M. prison guards named three times in civil rights complaints

Corrections and clarifications were added to this story on Thursday, Nov. 9, at 11:30 p.m. This investigation is a collaboration between Source NM and reporters from the Daily Lobo at the University of New Mexico. Two New Mexico correctional facility officers have been accused multiple times of abusing and harassing incarcerated people. This past year, the prison guards Lt. Christian Trujillo and Sgt. Danny Pelayo were both named three times in civil complaints and civil rights lawsuits. Trujillo and Pelayo work at the Northeast New Mexico Correctional Facility in Clayton. Civil complaints allege the guards have been involved in a lengthy pattern of abuse against incarcerated people. Their personnel files show that the incidents did not prevent them from moving up the ranks. Settlement negotiations haven’t gone anywhere, court records show.

Opinion: Día de los Muertos and its impact on UNM students

Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a traditional Mexican holiday that predates as far back as the Aztec era. It is an important holiday for the Mexican population since it celebrates both life and death. The holiday is often celebrated for two days – Nov. 1 - 2 – though it can vary, and celebrations may occur anywhere from Oct. 31 - Nov. 6. El Centro de La Raza’s revolved around the traditions of Día de los Muertos throughout the week.

Cultural Night brings the Muslim community together with pride

Two organizations on campus partnered together to participate in the second annual Charity Week to aid Islamic Relief of the USA in an effort to bring the Muslim community together in pride and support for those in Gaza. On Oct. 29, the Muslim Student Association (MSA) and Dunya Association created a celebration of culture – organizing several fundraising events throughout the week, Sarah Jawadi said – ambassador for Charity Week with the Islamic Relief Fund. All of the proceeds from this year focus on projects including education, relief aid for Syria and aid for children in the Middle East.

Protest for Palestine demands ceasefire

Across the street from the Farmers Market at Robinson Park, a few dozen people quickly turned into a few hundred gathered peacefully in support of a cease-fire in Gaza and the freedom of Palestine. Samidoun the Palestine Prisoner Solidarity Network was a lead group organizing the protest. Their name – Samidoun – means “those who are steadfast.” This also was a goal of the protest, to continue to be steadfast in their support, Michael Butler said – an organizer with Samidoun.
