Passing Mil Levy will provide funds to UNMH

The 6.4 Mil Levy has been in place since 1954 and is up for reauthorization every eight years. The levy provided about $75 million from property taxes to UNM Hospital last year. Billy Sparks, executive director of communications and marketing for the Health Sciences Center, said the levy helps pay for crucial equipment at the hospital.

Udall, Pearce focus on jobs, economic crisis

Reps. Steve Pearce and Tom Udall are spending time at UNM to inform students of their positions on the problems America faces this election year. Pearce, a Republican, said students should know he has their best interests at heart. "Between my background, my knowledge and my passion for working for New Mexico, I am the candidate who will see that New Mexico and the United States fix our economy and that we move into this new generation with jobs for the future and hope for the future," he said.

The winner of this year's presidential race will have to address the ominous question of global warming. Sens. Barack Obama and John McCain have said they recognize the importance of climate change and reducing America's dependence on foreign oil, but they have different solutions to the problem.

Bond C gives $28M to UNM health facilities

Voters have to weed through the major-party candidates and nonpartisan judges before they get to the general obligation bonds on the ballot. Bond C will distribute more than $57 million to health-related facilities for construction and expansion. About $28 million of the bond funds would benefit UNM.

Professor awarded for helping abuse victims

UNM professor Renee Ornelas will receive a Distinguished Public Service Award for her work with victims of sexual abuse. Ornelas, who teaches at the UNM Health Sciences Center, is the director of Para Los Niños. The program provides medical care for children who have been sexually abused and follows up with teenagers who have been sexually assaulted.

Congressional candidates clash over economy, energy

Congressional candidates Martin Heinrich and Darren White can't seem to agree on issues such as the economy and energy independence, but both have said they will seek a solution to health care and create affordable programs for everyone. Heinrich, the Democratic candidate for the First Congressional District, said he will work for better health care programs by continuing to stand up to large insurance companies.

International arena

Sens. Barack Obama and John McCain are sharply divided on foreign policy questions, such as how to exit Iraq and how to deal with Iran. Obama voted for a bill that would put a timeline on the Iraq War. "What I've said is we should end this war responsibly," Obama said during the first presidential debate.

Bookstore's technology center debuts with computers, software

Sophomore Andrew Riordan gasped in disbelief as UNM President David Schmidly announced him the winner of a new MacBook. The computer giveaway was part of Monday's ribbon-cutting ceremony for the technology center of the UNM Bookstore. Melanie Sparks, director of the Bookstore, said she and the administration decided to revamp the technology area of the store to better serve the UNM community.

Workshop offers tips on safety, avoiding crime

Students interested in learning how to avoid the tricks of the petty criminal trade can attend a personal safety workshop today from noon to 1 p.m. in the SUB Fiesta rooms. UNM Police Chief Kathy Guimond and Trish Hoffman of the Albuquerque Police Department's Women Against Crime program will be guest speakers.

Bond D funds upgrades to some UNM buildings

UNM will receive $17 million if General Obligation Bond D is passed on Nov. 4. Two million dollars will go to UNM's South Campus Student Success Center; $5 million will go toward renovating and expanding the Biology building; and $4 million will be given to the Film and Digital Media Building.

3 bonds target county infrastructure

There are 10 bonds on the ballot this season, and some are causing students and community members to pause at the polls. Three in particular deal with improving Bernalillo County's infrastructure: the Roads, Public Facilities Construction, and Storm Sewers and Wastewater Systems bonds.

University might get less funding from Legislature

UNM's funding from the Legislature could take a hit in 2009. The Roundhouse gives UNM about $360 million each legislative session, said Marc Saavedra, UNM's director of government affairs. Saavedra said UNM has received 10 to 20 percent of the money in the Legislature's special projects bill in recent years but that this year, Santa Fe has less money to give away, which could mean less funding for UNM.
