Three sorority members shaved their heads, and Alpha Chi Omega donated about $7,000 to help find a cure for children's cancer on Saturday night. The sorority sisters gave up their hair to benefit the St. Baldrick's Foundation, a nonprofit organization that funds cancer research.
Doctoral student Darrin Kowitz is establishing the University's first organization for veterans. Kowitz said he served in the Army in the '90s and wants to help veterans make the transition from the military to academics. "I've got about 50 veterans in my e-mail so far that are students of UNM," he said.
Lt. Pat Davis, spokesman for the UNM Police Department, said student Kevin Boyar confessed to having guns in his dorm during questioning Tuesday. Boyar was released on a $900 bond paid by his mother Wednesday morning after he was arrested outside the Student Residence Center on Tuesday.
During the month of April, the UNM Police Department was cleaning house. The department followed every tip it received about illicit activities on campus as part of "Operation Spring Clean." Lt. Pat Davis, spokesman for the department, said students should not be frightened to come forward in reporting illegal activities around campus.
Some students who know Kevin Boyar said he was mild-mannered and sweet. But others said he was irritable and had a bad temper. Kaethe Richter, who went to high school with Boyar, said he was a "very positive person" who enjoyed participating in sports. Richter said he was an athletic trainer at Eldorado High School, was on the swim team and enjoyed spending time with his mother.
Students who lived in the Student Residence Center with Kevin Boyar wondered why they were not informed by the TextMe UNM system when their neighbor was arrested Tuesday. "I was just walking to go eat at La Posada, and all these security guards surrounded all of us and started screaming at us to get behind a car," student Kaela Barber said.
Boyar The UNM Police Department arrested student Kevin Boyar on Tuesday on charges of unlawfully carrying a gun onto a University establishment. Police said four guns were recovered from Boyar's parents' house, including an AK-47 assault-style rifle, and there is evidence he brought the weapons to his room in the Student Residence Center.
Big Mountain, an area near Black Mesa, Ariz., used to be a place of peace and tradition, but now the land is being destroyed by the Peabody Coal Company, said Allen Cooper, a former member of the Big Mountain Support Committee. Cooper said the Navajo land has no electricity or water, and the people there provide for themselves.

Flynn sits behind a desk piled high with the papers, building plans and tools he needs for his assignments. As an architecture student, Flynn has 24-hour access to George Pearl Hall, and he needs it.

UNM alumnus Russell Bonn Jr. had to shelve his dreams after a baseball-sized tumor was discovered in his brain six years ago. The operation left him unable to keep his job, but that hasn't stopped him from pursuing success in a different field. Bonn graduated from UNM in 1986 with a bachelor's in mechanical engineering and went to work as an engineer for Rockwell Industry.

Bond set for man accused of attack SANTA FE (AP) - Bond has been set at $250,000 for a Japanese man accused of attacking an Englishman speaking on "thought transference" during an international conference in Santa Fe. State District Judge Michael Vigil on Friday set the bond for 33-year-old Kazuki Hirano of Yokohama, who has been held in the Santa Fe County jail.
The Daily Lobo has a new editor in chief. Previously the newspaper's managing editor, Damian Garde began his career in journalism at 15 when he wrote for the Youth Express page of the Albuquerque Journal. "I was good at writing, and I wanted to be paid for that," he said.
UNM's chapter of the Alpha Chi Omega sorority hosted its annual nacho night to raise money for cancer research. About 200 students hung out, played board games and ate nachos Saturday. Lucia Cook, the sorority's vice president of fraternity relations, said the event took a lot of preparation.
