Voting session begins for next GPSA president

Graduate students can begin voting for the next GPSA president today. Council Chairman Christopher Ramirez and Student Research Allocations Committee Chairman Danny Hernandez are vying for the presidency of the Graduate and Professional Student Association.

Environmentalist coalition aims to swing Senate race (AP) - A coalition of environmental groups is targeting the U.S. Senate race in New Mexico to help swing that seat into the Democratic column. The coalition plans to help Democrat Tom Udall in the race against the winner of the Republican primary, either Steve Pearce or Heather Wilson.

When I go over to Wal-Mart to purchase something, and I see how much vegetables are over there, and I really wouldn't spend money to pay for some of the vegetables that they have.

Student finds rhythm despite hearing loss (Video)

Paul Twitchell can read lips and facial expressions. But he might miss something when a teacher faces away from him in class. So, Twitchell watches sign language interpreters in class to enhance his understanding. Twitchell was born deaf. But he got hearing aids after his parents noticed he could hear loud noises, such as a gunshot or the engine of a low-flying plane.

Growers' market brings local flavor to UNM (Slideshow)

Student Rose Chavez said the UNM Growers' Market is here to stay. The market was set up at Cornell Plaza on Thursday with about 25 vendors, including local farmers and herbalists. The vendors were selling organic foods, vegetables and environmental products.


Kate McKeown, sister of former UNM law student James Quinn, bikes across a bridge dedicated to him Wednesday. "If James was here, he would be jumping for joy," she said.

Bridge dedicated in memory of student

UNM School of Law students and local bicyclists remembered the life of James Quinn during ceremonies Wednesday. Quinn was a law student who was killed Sept. 15 while bicycling on Route 66 in Tijeras Canyon. Mayor Martin Chavez dedicated a bike bridge in Quinn's honor.

Richardson looks to get licenses, leases for spaceport SANTA FE (AP) - Gov. Bill Richardson's administration hopes to secure critical licenses and leases for a planned spaceport in the months ahead, which will clear the way for construction to start. The $200 million spaceport - known as Spaceport America - received a major boost this week when voters in Sierra County approved a tax levy to help pay for construction of the project.

Students, staff and faculty received information about mental health Wednesday outside the SUB for Mental Health Awareness Day. Event coordinator Christine Tally said the most common mental disorders seen at the Student Health Center are depression and anxiety.

This three-part series on disabilities concludes Friday Five years ago, Margaret Leicester was cleaning her basement in Taos when a black widow bit her. A week after she was bitten, she suffered a stroke that paralyzed the left side of her body. "It made me deaf in my left ear and took away my eyesight all in one moment," she said.

April 16 A student went the UNM Police Department to report a series of harassing phone messages. She said an unidentified man left the messages on the KUNM phone system. The man accused a KUNM DJ of playing a song that praised the devil. The man said he would punish the DJ and claimed to be a KUNM staff member.

Student Aaron Anderson was diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome, a form of autism, when he was 5. "I suppose there was always the underlying sense that there seems to be something fundamentally different in me," Anderson said. "I always felt somewhat different from my peers.

Senator punished for breaking campaign rules

ASUNM punished a newly elected senator after he received complaints about his campaigning. The Associated Students of UNM Elections Committee decided to reprimand Sen. Christopher George after it received four complaints stating that he violated elections codes while campaigning April 15.

DL: Why did you choose to work for UNM? GG: I worked with LTER before I graduated. I worked there as a student, and then they just had a position open up for manager.

UNM cuts dorm services to save on housing costs

UNM is cutting dorm costs by stripping services. Telephones were taken out of the dorms at the beginning of the fall semester. Housekeeping services in the apartments were discontinued, and students no longer get HBO. Dupuy Bateman, director of Student Housing, said the money saved will be reinvested in the dorms.

Firefighters work overtime to control raging Trigo Fire MANZANO (AP) - Firefighters braced for windy conditions Monday, a day after gusty winds grounded air tankers and sent the Trigo Fire on a nail-biting run between the towns of Manzano and Torreon. More crews poured into the area overnight, and additional air tankers were ordered against the 3,745-acre fire.

Faculty calls on Schmidly to address UNM finances

The Faculty Senate began circulating a petition Thursday that calls for President David Schmidly to address University finances. The petition states that the "unfettered control of University finances" has negatively impacted research and teaching. Biology professor Timothy Lowrey said the University seems to have mishandled grant funds.
