Harvard Mall Project aims to make over neighborhood

The pounding of hammers and sounds that emanate from a construction site disturb the usually serene atmosphere of the Harvard Mall during the day. Once construction is complete, the area around Harvard Drive across from UNM will have a new life to it, one of the development partners said.

PNM wants to increase electric rates

PNM wants to increase its annual rates for electricity by almost 15 percent. The increase would cost the average household about $80 more per year. The utility company needs to increase its electric rates because production costs and customer demand have gone up, said Jeff Buell, a spokesman for PNM.

Gulu Walk raises awareness

About 20 people walked 4 1/2 miles from Johnson Field to Civic Plaza on Saturday to support refugees in northern Uganda. The trek, called Gulu Walk, was part of an international campaign to help children who flee villages to avoid coercion to fight in Uganda's 20-year civil war, said alumna Kay Bounkeua, who organized the Albuquerque walk.

The smoking debate (Video)

Several campus groups have talked about banning smoking on Main Campus. The Health Sciences Center became smoke-free over the summer, and a Staff Council resolution to ban tobacco at UNM was presented to the Board of Regents in March.

Conference addresses need for cancer-research funding

Staff Report The fight against cancer will make small steps unless scientists get funding to take risks with their research on the disease, a UNM researcher said. Michelle Ozbun said a lack of federal funding allows researchers to take on only small projects with little risks, but projects with big risks are the ones that pay off.

RIAA threatens to sue network users

Seventeen people may soon have to face the music for illegally sharing files on UNM's network. The University received pre-lawsuit notices from the Recording Industry Association of America on Wednesday, offering network users the opportunity to settle their cases before going to court, said Richard Mertz, a lawyer for UNM.

UNM to develop North Golf Course

Residents of the North Campus area want to stop the University from developing a nearby golf course, but it appears to be a lost cause. "We're going to move ahead with the retirement community for the North Golf Course with participation with the neighborhood association," said Jamie Koch, president of the Board of Regents.

Roadwork begins near UNMH

Orange barrels and construction signs will grace the roads of North Campus for the rest of the semester. Construction began last week on the intersection of Camino de Salud and Yale Boulevard, west of UNM Hospital.

Finding the patterns of health

UNM Hospital received a $12.3 million grant to study Valencia County children from gestation to age 21. Doctors and nurses from the hospital will keep tabs on 1,000 children's health as part of a national study, said Robert Annett, principle investigator for the project.

Friends mourn UNM students killed in crash

Two UNM students died over fall break after their vehicle crashed near Cuba. Rachael McCoy and Michael O'Neill, both 18, were on their way home to Farmington when the crash happened, said Tim Lucero, undersheriff for Sandoval County.
