UNM to develop North Golf Course

Residents of the North Campus area want to stop the University from developing a nearby golf course, but it appears to be a lost cause. "We're going to move ahead with the retirement community for the North Golf Course with participation with the neighborhood association," said Jamie Koch, president of the Board of Regents.

Roadwork begins near UNMH

Orange barrels and construction signs will grace the roads of North Campus for the rest of the semester. Construction began last week on the intersection of Camino de Salud and Yale Boulevard, west of UNM Hospital.

Finding the patterns of health

UNM Hospital received a $12.3 million grant to study Valencia County children from gestation to age 21. Doctors and nurses from the hospital will keep tabs on 1,000 children's health as part of a national study, said Robert Annett, principle investigator for the project.

Friends mourn UNM students killed in crash

Two UNM students died over fall break after their vehicle crashed near Cuba. Rachael McCoy and Michael O'Neill, both 18, were on their way home to Farmington when the crash happened, said Tim Lucero, undersheriff for Sandoval County.

GPSA passes bill to promote tolerance

GPSA passed an anti-discrimination resolution Tuesday, but it cut more than half the original bill. GPSA president Joseph Garcia said the resolution had been stripped of its teeth after almost three hours of debate, but it still tackles important issues on campus.

University looks into doubling work-study funding

UNM might be able to hire twice as many students for work-study. The University will ask the state Legislature to double its funding for the work-study program, an increase of about $1.5 million, said Marc Saavedra, government relations director. "The more you have students living and working on campus, then you tend to see more students graduate, first of all, but they also graduate within four to six years," he said.

Device could cut UNM's energy costs

ASUNM will ask New Mexico for $25 million to make the University more energy efficient. "If you lower the cost of your energy consumption, that money can be invested in education, which is a better use of resources," said Matt Barnes, vice president of the student government.

Student Health Services will coordinate National Health Education Day for students who want a healthier lifestyle. The event is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Cornell Mall.

Balloon Fiesta draws exchange students

Although the thrill of the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta might be gone for some locals, it's quite a sight for students from other countries. "I think this is one of the greatest events, not only for the United States, but for the whole world," exchange student Masha Sotmikova said.

The College of Education is being reviewed to determine its eligibility for renewal of state and national accreditations. The review happens every seven years, said Richard Van Dongen, deputy dean for the college.

Schmidly inaugurated as president

David Schmidly was sworn in Sunday as UNM's 19th president. "If anyone is able to connect with the various constituents as large and diverse as at the University of New Mexico, it is David Schmidly," Faculty Senate President Jackie Hood said.
