by Marisa Demarco Daily Lobo The governor signed several election reform bills into law Wednesday that will change New Mexico's standards for voter identification and third-party registration drives. Voters will be required to state their names, the last four digits of their Social Security numbers and their dates of birth or show some form of physical identification before they vote. Republican state Sen. Rod Adair said it is not enough. "The people cried for voter ID, and they got no voter ID," he said. The language of the bill changed the ID requirement very little, he said. "It is not a voter ID bill," he said. In the event that voters don't want to state their personal information, they will have to present physical evidence before voting.

Two UNM police officers were dispatched to Zimmerman Library when a security guard reported seeing a man with drug paraphernalia in the second floor bathrooms, according to a police report. The officer asked the man for permission to search his bag and found a glass pipe with burn marks on both ends and two spoons with burn marks on the bottom, the report stated.

On March 14, the Board of Regents approved two health insurance contracts that will replace all health plans available to UNM employees. The contracts, which were awarded to Lovelace Sandia Health System and United Healthcare, will result in a range of price changes from a 6 percent reduction to a 9 percent increase, said Arthur Gonzales, manager of benefits in the Human Resources department.

Instead of having a debate, Buckner Creel, GPSA president, and Andrea Gunderson, a presidential candidate, sat in the Santa Ana room in the SUB and talked about an issue that came up in last year's election. The 2004 election was the first time online voting was used. Gunderson, who sat on the election commission committee last year, said there was concern because some graduate and professional students were not able to vote online. Debbie Morris, director of Student Activities, said some first-time online voters didn't realize until voting began that students without a Net ID could not vote.
Enrique Lamadrid wants Chicano studies to be the next success story in University College. He changed the name of the program, is looking to change funding from soft to hard money and is boasting a 30 percent increase in enrollment this semester. "All the wind is blowing in our direction at this point," said Lamadrid, director of the program.

UNM President Louis Caldera spent his birthday at the second annual Budget Summit on Friday. ASUNM President Kevin Stevenson presented Caldera with balloons and a cake, jokingly saying student fees had paid for them. "I'm glad they didn't wait till the end of the day," Caldera said.
Retired deputy chief named new head of APD (AP) - A veteran Albuquerque police officer has returned to lead the department. Mayor Martin Chavez announced Saturday that retired deputy chief Ray Schultz would replace Gilbert Gallegos as chief of the Albuquerque Police Department.
