Justicia sin Fronteras is proof that students' interests can transform a class. Last fall after watching "Se§orita Extraviada," a story about the more than 200 young women who were kidnapped, raped and murdered in Ju†rez, Mexico, members of the Spanish 439 class at UNM decided to get involved.
Running a marathon's distance is something to celebrate. In tribute to war heroes, five members of UNM's Navy ROTC participated in the 26.2-mile Bataan Memorial Death March and took first place in the military light division on March 21. Members had to run the marathon wearing camouflage, military boots and a 10-pound backpack.
A national Chicana/Chicano association made a stop in Albuquerque 14 years ago and broke its attendance record - it came back to try and duplicate that over the weekend. The event held at the Hyatt Regency Downtown brought those interested in Chicana and Chicano research together to mix activism and academic learning.

Judy Jones, UNM vice president for institutional advancement, has held her position since 1998 and has been employed at UNM for 16 years. She will take another position at UNM as the associate vice president for strategic initiatives at the Health Sciences Center on April 12.

Thousands of middle and high school students from around New Mexico will swarm the UNM campus tomorrow at the New Mexico Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement Inc. Jamboree. UNM President Louis Caldera said Thursday's budget summit went a long way toward helping administrators, students, staff and faculty understand each other's financial needs. In a unanimous vote, ASUNM senators passed their spring 2004 budget Wednesday - allocating about two-thirds of the available funds to ASUNM executive agencies. The Associated Students of UNM spread $499,418 across 122 groups, with ASUNM executive agencies receiving $344,687 of those funds.
Nicole Miller said she is protective of her personal items because she knows how easily identity theft can happen. About 9.9 million identity-theft cases were reported last year, affecting 4.6 percent of the population, according to the Federal Trade Commissions' Identity Theft Survey Report.
UNM police were greeted early Wednesday morning by broken windows and trash cans that were lit on fire. Vandalism was reported to UNMPD from Scholes Hall, Castetter Hall, the Biology Annex, UNM Continuing Education and the Hibben Center. UNMPD was dispatched to Castetter Hall at about 5:30 in reference to seven broken windows in the building's greenhouse and lobby.
A tuition increase for UNM students is inevitable. A budget summit, which has never been done at UNM, will allow the University community to engage in dialogue about issues concerning UNM finances. "We are going to have to make some choices, and we might have to make some sacrifices," UNM President Louis Caldera said.
Two teens break free from local detention center (AP) - Two teens, including one charged with murder, have escaped from an Albuquerque youth detention facility that is scheduled to close this year. Joseph Archuleta, 18, who is charged with murdering a Moriarty teen last August, and Alan Green, 19, arrested for probation violations, made it out of the Camino Nuevo detention center Monday night.
Former death row inmate Juan Melendez Jr. said Tuesday that he was not saved by the system, but something else altogether. "The system wanted to kill me," he said. "I was saved by the grace of God." Melendez, who spoke during a senior seminar course in Mitchell Hall, said a man living under the constant threat of death who does not grab something spiritual will either go crazy or kill himself.

Staff Report UNM junior Sean Murray is one of nearly 80 students in the nation selected as a 2004 Truman Scholar. According to a University news release, Murray is the sixth UNM student to receive the scholarship. The award is a $26,000 merit-based grant awarded to undergraduates who want financial support to attend graduate or professional school in preparation for careers in government or nonprofit organizations.
