ASUNM passes 2003-04 budget

The ASUNM Senate unanimously passed its budget for the 2003-04 fiscal year Wednesday with $310,404 out of $485,747 going back to funding for the Associated Students of UNM. The ASUNM student agencies — Community Experience, the Crafts Studio, the Elections Commission, the Homecoming Committee, the South West Film Center and Student Special Events — accounted for most of the $310,404.

ASUNM Candidate Profiles

Jacque Garcia If Jacque Garcia, a member of the Vision slate, is elected to the ASUNM senate, one of her top priorities will be bringing ideas from the UNM community back to the student government for implementation, she said. Garcia, a freshman majoring in psychology, said getting the word out about the Associated Students of UNM is crucial to the organization’s effectiveness.

UNM presidential candidate Louis Caldera said his interest in leading UNM is to help the University in any way he can and to build support from the state and beyond. "We need to find the resources that the University needs," Caldera said. "You are all to be commended for having a very fine University with very highly regarded programs.

Red Cross Club to offer activities to community

by Stephanie Candelaria Daily Lobo With fewer than 25 employees, the Mid-Rio Grande Chapter of the American Red Cross depends on a core of trained volunteers to fulfill its mission in the local community. Now, a small group of UNM students will do its part to help the international humanitarian organization.

ASUNM Profiles: Nick Trudell

UNM senior Nick Trudell said he will make a good ASUNM Senator because he is very organized, in touch with the needs of the students and easy to approach. Trudell, a member of the Cherries to Silver campaign, said that his main objective, if elected, will be to bring the fun back to the UNM campus.

ASUNM Profiles: Matt Hanson

ASUNM senatorial candidate Matt Hanson, who is running as a member of the Vision slate, said that if elected, he would like to push for faculty evaluation forms that would be accessible to students. "I think it would make the faculty more responsible if they knew students could look up an evaluation, filled out by other students, and decide whether or not they want to take the class," he said.

Argument leads to fatality

A dispute between a driver and a pedestrian turned deadly Tuesday afternoon after a male victim was shot with a small caliber handgun while inside the Mail Boxes Etc., 2132A Central Ave. SE, directly across from campus. The man died while being transported to University Hospital, said Albuquerque Police Department Det.

ASUNM senatorial candidate Justin Landis, who is running under the Cherries to Silver campaign, said that, if elected, he would like to see all of the organizations on campus get the recognition they deserve. "I would like to personalize UNM and help the various organizations in getting more appreciation," Landis said.

Taos conference offers up quality training to writers

Applications for the 2003 Taos Summer Writers’ Conference, a week of workshops for beginning and advanced writers to sharpen their skills, are being accepted until April 15. Since its first year in 1999, the conference, sponsored by the UNM College of Arts and Sciences, has played host to more than 120 writers at the Sagebrush Inn Conference Center in Taos to participate in writing workshops, public readings, writers’ panels and related special events.

Campus to be pouring Fair Trade Coffee soon

by Jodi Hunley Daily Lobo The Fair Trade Initiative, a UNM group advocating better treatment of farmers, said at a meeting on Monday that Aramark would begin serving Fair Trade Coffee on campus as soon as shipments arrived. Fair Trade coffee will be served at Dane Smith Hall and the SUB tent, said Brandt Milstein, the group’s president.

Border patrol takes more than 1,000 pounds of pot ALAMOGORDO, N.M. (AP) — Nearly 1,300 pounds of marijuana were seized by border patrol agents during five separate traffic stops over the weekend. The Bureau of Customs and Border Protection announced Monday that the largest bust included 703 pounds of marijuana that was hidden in a load of frozen food being transported by a tractor-trailer.

Programs make best colleges list

Staff Report Seven UNM graduate programs within the college of fine arts and the schools of medicine and law have been ranked among the best in the nation this year by the U.S. News & World Report. The weekly news magazine, which according to its Web site began its annual ranking of more than 1,400 accredited colleges and universities nationwide in 1983, provides the service to aid its readers in researching how their particular school's academic program compares with those of its peers, or schools with broadly similar missions.
