Students push fair trade coffee

A student organization is making a collaborative effort with several campus groups to try and push ARAMARK, UNM's exclusive food service provider, toward changing to a more socially responsible brand of coffee. Talks have begun between ARAMARK and the Fair Trade Initiative, a student organization lobbying for ARMARK to replace its wholesale coffee with the more socially responsible Fair Trade Federation coffee.

University goes an extra mile

With members of the UNM community preparing themselves for the possibility of being called to active military duty here and abroad, the University has plans in place to accommodate their educations during any service-related absence. Currently, about 120 UNM students and staff serve in some branch of military reserves or the National Guard, according to New Mexico Army and Air National Guard figures.

What they bring to the table isn't measured by statistics. The two players and one arena scored two points, two points and zero points respectively.

TVI offers free tax assistance

Students stressing about the April 15 tax deadline have an option offered through the local community college, called TVI Tax Help. Tax help is a national Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program that is offered through the Internal Revenue Service which is available free to taxpayers who made less than $33,000 last year.

UniversityHospital incurs fine for fraud

UNM has reached a settlement agreement to pay $10,856.54 to the United States government for fraudulent bills submitted to Medicare, Medicaid and other third-party insurance providers by Dr. William L. Johnson, former medical director at the University Hospital Pain Management Clinic.

Lobo basketball center to head home

Sophomore center Chad Bell announced Monday that he has decided to leave the UNM men’s basketball team. In a press conference Monday, with head coach Ritchie McKay by his side, Bell stated that his reasons for leaving were to find a bigger role in a different program and a desire to be closer to his Southern Californian home.

UNM, Rape Crisis Center offers victim assistance

Not only does the Albuquerque community have several law enforcement agencies and hospitals to treat rape victims and investigate allegations of sexual assault, it also has many organizations that provide valuable counseling and support services. On campus, Students Educating Peers About Sex, also known as SEPAS, provides victims with referrals and guidance, organizes campaigns for awareness of sexual health issues and gives prevention presentations.

Anti-war graffiti hits campus

UNM police are looking into nine separate instances of graffiti vandalism at campus buildings -- all expressing anti-war themes and occurring only hours after the first attacks on Iraq. The anti-war messages, including "War is murder;" "Bush is a terrorist;" and "No war," were spray painted onto the walls of the Navy and Air Force ROTC buildings, the north wall of the Fine Arts Building and along the south wall of the city reservoir on South Redondo Drive sometime between Wednesday night and Thursday morning.

Smoke from UNM station fills street

Firefighters responded to a report of smoke coming from the water pump station on Redondo Drive near Yale Boulevard at about 5 p.m. Sunday. As smoke poured from the building's windows, three city fire trucks and a unit from the Albuquerque Hazardous Materials Response Team arrived on the scene.

War, protests march on

The last week has not only seen a flurry of activity among U.S. soldiers overseas, but also among community members who are protesting the ongoing war in Iraq. Since the war began Wednesday, and for a long time before it started, there have been community-wide protests in Albuquerque, the majority of them occurring right along the campus border.

University announces 5 presidential candidates

The University's Board of Regents announced Friday a list of five candidates that the 18th president of UNM will be chosen from by the end of the semester. The announcement comes five months after regents formed an 11-member search committee to examine applications and interview candidates from a pool larger than 100.

The award was recently presented to Larry and Dorothy Rainosek, the owners of both the Frontier and Golden Pride BBQ Chicken and Ribs Restaurants in Albuquerque, at the annual Hospitality Industry Awards.
