Last week, I had the great good fortune to attend a meditation retreat in the high country of northern New Mexico. On Monday, 26,000 Chicago school teachers went on strike. This is the first time in more than 25 years that there has been a strike over schools in Chicago.

I was born into a family that had income near the poverty line, but it was during a time when I was able to earn enough money working evenings, weekends and summers to pay for my college tuition and graduate from college, and even go to graduate school.
