Candidates should check their facts

Editor, In Monday’s GOP primary debate, there were two statements regarding women’s health issues that were both incorrect and detrimental to society. First, the morning-after pill, also known as “Plan B,” is not the abortion pill.

US health care flawed, needs reform now

Editor, The 2011 Domenici Public Policy Conference, held on the NMSU campus in Las Cruces last week, brought together experts on America’s national debt, economic outlook, national and cyber security, science, technology and health care reform to discuss progress in these areas and what can be done to maintain America’s competitiveness on a global scale. Even though I work for a public policy organization, I attended the conference as one of 14 student representatives from UNM.

UNM Dems do it differently this year

Editor, I don’t know what you may think about political organizations, but I could guess that you are probably wrong — at least when it comes to UNM Democrats.

TAs are piled high and deep

I always shake the first day of school, and I wonder if the front row smells my fear, or possibly the sweat. Since I’m the only teacher in the classroom, I have to start talking, and I have to appear as competent and nonplussed as possible.

DWI prevention part of orientation

As program manager of UNM’s Campus Office of Substance Abuse Prevention (COSAP), I’d like to say a few words in response to Daily Lobo Columnist Will Desmare’s “DWI prevention a shared obligation,” in Monday’s issue. Before I do, let me say that anything that prompts discussion among members of the UNM community regarding this serious problem is by definition positive, so I thank Mr. Desmare for writing on a topic of grave interest to all New Mexicans.

DWI prevention a shared obligation

Last week, I read in the Daily Lobo that college students are more likely to get a DWI. I thought to myself that college students have always been more likely to get a DWI. The article addressed a lot of reasons why, like this is the first time that college students are away from home, and so on.

Online ratings promote laziness, student revenge

Editor, I have a couple of things I want to say in reference to Thursday’s front-page article, “Professors Rate RateMyProfessor.” The kinds of students who leave comments on RateMyProfessor.com probably fall into one or more of three categories: The first is the kind of student that I and all instructors dread: They don’t want to work, have a ridiculous sense of entitlement and throw hissy fits when they don’t get their way.

We must relive 9/11 so we never forget

It’s an early March morning in New York. I’m standing on the corner of Vesey and Church streets in the shadow of a church that the travel guides tell me has seen a lot in its 200-plus-year history, but I’m more interested in the construction site across the street.

Right drugs could lead to better lives

Recreational drug use is, rightly or wrongly, a part of college life. Experimentation with illicit substances can be very enlightening or incredibly destructive, depending on the circumstances and the individual.

Duck Pond service not without sin

On Aug. 28 the Aquinas Newman Center was allowed to hold a public mass at the Duck Pond. The University granted permission and held the event in spite of protesters condemning the ceremony. Unknown to those who missed this gloating occasion was the presence of several attendees who gracefully worshiped in the middle of campus, many of whom did know the annoyance and controversies that they were producing. This ultimately raises the question: Can the Catholic Church, or any church, hold spiritual ceremonies in public areas?

US funds murderers to feed oil addiction

Editor, I compliment and I thank many the Jews of conscience in the United States and in Israel who have spoken out loud and clear — publicly damning the Israeli government’s brutal oppression and mass murder of Palestinians.

New signs benefit peds and pedalers

Editor, Kudos to the University for installing signs around campus to remind bikers, in the most cordial words, to respect pedestrians and to share the roads.

Accusation of racism at Daily Lobo offensive, untrue

Readers, On Monday morning, my staff and I received the following petition from a number of individuals, and it is my desire to let their voice be heard: I just signed the following petition addressed to: Daily Lobo. ———————— _Tell the Daily Lobo to Drop the “I-Word.” According to the Drop the I Word (sic) campaign, “people may be out of status for many reasons, but that doesn’t make them ‘illegal.’ No one should adopt dehumanizing terms that are racially charged, legally innacurate (sic) or deny people due process.” We’re calling for an apology from the editors of the Daily Lobo for using the “i-word” in the caption of the photo on the Daily Lobo’s cover on Friday, September 2.

Protest against ROTC was not against military

Editor, Regarding Wednesday’s piece on ROTC recruitment on campus, I feel that the article greatly overlooked the more specific reason behind the protest of ROTC recruitment and that the piece quickly turned in to a 360 word advertisement for the ROTC program. Therefore it seems necessary to put the counter argument forward here.
