Calling Americans whiners not accurate in most cases
October 23Editor, In response to Vanessa Strobbe's column Wednesday imploring us all to stop whining, I know it is incredibly frustrating for Republicans who have grown accustomed to being in charge to realize that honest disagreement about how this country is being run is not "whining.
Americans can prevail despite McCain's smear and fear tactics
October 23Editor, I write in complete disgust of the fearmongering tactics - the worst form of smear and fear - being waged by John McCain's campaign. Does the campaign honestly believe the American people will fall prey to such a divisive and deceitful form of campaigning? The truth always prevails.
Rules should be clarified for political discussion at polls
October 23Editor, I voted at the SUB on Tuesday afternoon, and I'm glad I did, but I had an experience while waiting in line that I need some assistance with from your readers. As I was talking with my friend about a current newspaper editorial, one of the SUB's poll workers said, "No political discussions in line.
Slander of candidates should be banned on UNM campus
October 22Editor, I realize this election is an important one and that people are emotionally invested in one candidate or another. This election has inspired many people to share their opinions, and that's something that a university such as ours should encourage. What the University should not stand for, however, is spreading malicious and intentional slander.
Column: America, it's time to stop whining
Vanessa Strobbe Opinion Editor | October 22In a CNN/Opinion Research Corp. poll released Tuesday, 75 percent of Americans said things are going badly in the United States. Two-thirds of those questioned said they're scared about the way things are going, and three in four said the current conditions in the country are stressing them out.
Pearce lacks critical thinking, offers nothing to constituents
October 22Editor, I am looking forward to reading a story about Rep. Tom Udall, because the Bushonomics 101 predicated by Rep. Steve Pearce is useless. He proudly said in a TV ad that he voted against the bailout when everybody now realizes that to do nothing was the stupidest thing one could have done.
Election should focus on current crises, not slandering candidates
October 21Editor, I want to thank Hunter Riley for her story about the visit of Sen. John McCain to UNM. Riley reported that after McCain asked the crowd "Who is the real Barack Obama?" someone shouted out "terrorist." McCain didn't speak out against this ignorance; he just laughed along with the rest of the crowd.
McCain's economic policies will widen gap between tax brackets
October 21Editor, There are a lot of reasons why I will not vote for John McCain. The aspect of McCain's platform I dislike the most is his position on the economy. In contrast to the economic plan proposed by Barack Obama, I believe the McCain economic plan is decidedly not looking out for the best interests of the vast majority of Americans during a critical time in which we face major economic problems.
Living modestly can solve America's greedy addictions
October 21Editor, I enjoy living simply and healthily at much less than half the U.S. poverty level for a single person. I lived well for all of 2007 on $3,542 for my total expenses - rent, food, etc. I have no right to more than I need while others in this world have less than they need.
Check the facts yourself instead of relying on media
October 20Editor, This is a response to the column "Barack Obama: the bad man" by Benjamin Sanchez from Wednesday's Daily Lobo. I realize Sanchez's main point that he is trying to get across as far as Obama having a weak character for being in association with some individuals.
Ask Dr. Peg
Dr. Peggy Spencer columnist | October 20Dear Dr. Peg, I don't feel well. What is the best way to access Student Health and Counseling? Do I need an appointment? Should I come in or call? Can I get help online? You can call for an appointment, come in and make an appointment or come in and be seen the same day.
Moving services center will tie students to weapons maker
October 20Editor, I read the Oct. 13 article "Town hall to address plans for Student Services" in the Daily Lobo and was troubled by its implications. First, President David Schmidly assured us (in the dehumanized parlance of neoliberalism) that moving vital services to the Lockheed Martin building off campus would "improve customer service.
NM offers fertility options for couples who can't conceive
October 15Editor, While it is important to publicize new fertility resources in nearby Colorado, it is equally important to inform our community that they can receive similar reproductive treatments such as in vitro fertilization here in Albuquerque. The Google search for "New Mexico IVF" reveals that the Center for Reproductive Medicine of New Mexico is an IVF group in Albuquerque.
Column: Barack Obama: the bad man
Benjamin Sanchez guest columnist | October 15The good man desires the same thing with all his soul. This brief but profound sentence sums up Aristotle's teaching on the good man. We can understand this sentence by starting with Aristotle's examination of the bad or weak man. He struggles with doing what is right and often does what he knows to be bad.
Column: Look past fallacies when voting
Ethan Mills guest columnist | October 14As an instructor for Philosophy 156: Reasoning and Critical Thinking, election seasons are both exciting teaching opportunities and depressing referendums on the basic rationale of the American public. I couldn't ask for better textbook examples of fallacies than those found in our political discourse.
