Palestinians are victims of collective punishment

Editor, This is in response to Donald Gluck's letter in Thursday's Daily Lobo wherein he states, "Israel does not believe in collective guilt, nor does she practice collective punishments." Um, sorry to burst your bubble, but the crimes that Israel is committing against the Palestinian people are condemned by the international community as "collective punishment.

Mayor in Pa. incites racism through immigration laws

Editor, If illegal immigration is an issue for the federal government to deal with, why is Mayor Lou Barletta of Hazleton, Pa., taking matters into his own hands? It is interesting to note that Barletta will be running for Congress in the upcoming election.

Fetus represents new life, not merely a lump of cells

Editor, I did not want to be pulled into the issue of abortion. But I believe I need to make several important points about it. First and foremost, I am a virgin because I am not ready to be a husband or a father. Raising children is a huge responsibility, a responsibility that I am not ready to bear.

Palestinian attacks justify Israel's measures in Gaza

Editor, It seems there is a letter published in the Daily Lobo every day about the Palestinians. Thursday's letter by Amjad Musleh criticized the Israelis for collective punishment of the inhabitants of the Gaza Strip. Monday's letter by Alaa El Maoued decried the condition of the Gaza Strip residents and accused Israel of terrorism for responding to 150 Qassam rockets fired by Hamas into southern Israel.

Course fees shouldn't be factor in deciding grades

Editor, Psychology 105 is attended by 2,200 students in nine sections each semester, according to the UNM Public Affairs Department. Along with this course comes an unusual fee of $60, tacked on for the use of WebCT. WebCT is supposed to be a free online program.

Vaginal discharge: right as rain

Dear Dr. Peg, I discharge a lot, and it makes wearing underwear uncomfortable. Is there any way to not discharge so much? I've had an ongoing itch and have noticed an unusual itch coming from my vaginal area. Could this be a sign of a yeast infection? Dear women, Imagine your mouth without saliva, your nose without mucus, your eyes without tears - you get the idea.

Q&A: Les Roberts

by Matthew Chavez Daily Lobo columnist On Jan. 9, the World Health Organization and the Iraqi government released a study that estimates about 150,000 Iraqis died from violence between the beginning of the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq and June 2006. Controversy over the issue first arose after a 2004 Johns Hopkins University study found 100,000 Iraqis died from causes related to the occupation of Iraq in that timeframe.

TextMe UNM alert service fails to work as promised

Editor, After I woke up at 7 a.m. on Tuesday, I padded into the living room of my parents' home, turned on the TV to a local news program and turned on my laptop and logged on to Unm.edu. Both informed me that the University was on a two-hour delay. Celebrating slightly, I took a shower and made some coffee.

Editorial: 75 years after Hitler's rise, world still has its perils

On Jan. 30, 1933, the Third Reich came to power in Germany under a combination of circumstances - a wounded national pride that cried for a leader who would avenge Germany's World War I humiliation, a slump in the economy that created a sense of insecurity the Nazis were quick to exploit, and a racial ideology full of promises for the Aryan people and horror for everyone else - particularly the Jews, the gypsies and homosexuals.

UNM students must teach arts patrons how to rock

Editor, So, I just got back from "Jazz Jazz Jazz," Eddie Daniels' salute to Benny Goodman with New Mexico Symphony Orchestra in Popejoy Hall. It is my feeling that we need to get more UNM students to similar New Mexico Symphony Orchestra events. If you are waiting to hear how it will help you and make you a better person, honestly, I don't really care.

Parking pay stations are a hassle, need to be fixed

Editor, It was the second day of school, and as my last class ended, I remembered what I dread most about returning to school: leaving the parking structure. After my ticket read "invalid" at the pay-on-foot station, I was forced - like many of my fellow students - to wait in line for 45 minutes to pay at the booth.

Anti-abortionists a threat to women's right to choose

Editor, I write this in response to Benjamin Sanchez's letter published in the Daily Lobo on Thursday. Sanchez argues that justice is the backbone of what he calls "human nature." As I understood it, human nature is defined as those values we have imprinted on us by both society and our genetic makeup.

Electing Obama will show U.S. is tolerant, progressive

Editor, The day after the Sept. 11 attacks, headlines around the world read, "We are all Americans." This defining moment united people from all races, nations and creeds in one solidified voice against violence. Regretfully, the U.S. administration, led by President Bush, has since completely and utterly destroyed pro-American sentiments throughout the globe by waging an illegitimate war in Iraq.

Egypt's hospitality toward Palestinians a lesson for all

Editor, This letter is in response to the article "Thousands of Gazans flee to Egypt" published in the Daily Lobo on Thursday. It is incredible how an organization that has been condemned by the West and was the explanation behind the terrible sanctions imposed on the Gaza Strip will continue to take initiative against the Israeli government.

It's better to be high on life than to get high on drugs

Editor, I refuse to buy, sell, grow or use marijuana. I have never bought, sold or grown it in my life. About 30 years ago, I took some tokes of marijuana that was offered to me. Marijuana benefits certain health problems, but other natural and legal remedies exist for all those conditions.

Woman's right to choose an inherent freedom in U.S.

Editor, It is not surprising that we, the UNM community, have had to read the opinion of another ignorant individual - more importantly the opinion of another male - on the subject of abortion. I am referring to Benjamin Sanchez's letter published in the Daily Lobo on Thursday.

ASUNM to keep tuition low,

Editor, The ASUNM Lobby Committee participates annually in the New Mexico legislative session by lobbying for initiatives that affect students of the University. Goals for this session include the maintenance of low tuition by supporting a zero to minimal increase in the tuition credit, as well as doubling the current amount of state work-study funding.

How to freeze a cold in its tracks

Dear Dr. Peg, It seems like everyone I know has a cold. Is there anything I can do so I don't get sick? Does Airborne work? It is definitely cold season. Coughers and sneezers are at every turn. Why now? This time of the year, the weather is cold, so we close the windows, turn up the heat and stay indoors together.

Despite cell phone law, people still yap and drive

Editor, Lately, I have become increasingly frustrated by people who still think it's OK to talk on a cell phone while driving. I can't tell you how many times in the past few weeks I have almost been run into by some moron who is paying more attention to his profoundly unimportant phone conversation than watching where the hell he or she is going.

Abortion denies humans an inherent right to life

Editor, It is said that what is lacking most in the world is justice. This statement suggests that the primary cause of problems among humans is injustice. Justice must be something great if it can bring more peace and harmony to the world. Justice must be a fundamental ingredient to living a truly human life.
