Breathalyzer as necessary as speedometer in vehicles

Editor, As a lifelong citizen of New Mexico, I would like to add a voice to the interlock discussion. I think the presence of an interlock would prevent the occurrence of drunken driving, because the vehicle simply would not start if the driver were drunk.

Blanket interlock policy too prohibitive, expensive

Editor, Lucinda Ulrich proposed requiring ignition interlocks on every single car as a solution to drunken driving in yesterday's Daily Lobo, so that nobody could ever drive intoxicated again. This is grossly heavy-handed, because this policy would be punishing all drivers for the actions of a few.

Americans right to elect the party of the people

Editor, In the days since the midterm elections, the Republican Party has been doing its best to come to terms with the American people's rather sensible decision that their interests would be better served by the Democratic Party. With this country's government again being in part controlled by liberals - the people who founded the U.

DWI problem needs fixing at the source, not in courts

Editor, I am deeply saddened by the death of the four family members from Las Vegas, N.M., who died in a car accident caused by a drunken driver. My heart goes out to the sole survivor, who has lost her sisters and her parents due to alcohol abuse and poor judgment.

Time ripe for Dems to go green

This midterm election could be summed up by Shakespeare - to Bush or not to Bush? That was the question. The answer was a resounding "not," though the midterm results were much more a measure of Republicans' failure than of Democratic success. Throw the rascals out, people thought, and throw they did.

Immigration enforcement shouldn't involve bullets

Editor, Hopefully, columnist Steve Painter was making a joke with his proposals in Tuesday's Daily Lobo. To enforce illegal immigration laws on the Mexican border with bullets, as he suggested, brings to mind the razor wire and guard towers that once surrounded East Berlin.

Republicans can rebuild party over next two years

Editor, It has now been more than a week since the midterm elections, and many Democrats are jumping for joy, as Republicans are in their own puddle of tears. But I would like to tell Republicans not to cry - many major polls suggest this year's election was not a vote for Democrats, but a vote against the war, a vote against Mark Foley and a vote against Republicans not acting like Republicans.

PAC claims not supported by any intimate knowledge

Editor, Over the past couple of weeks, I have seen a number of letters in the Daily Lobo from the PAC slate, which is currently running nine candidates for the ASUNM Senate. These letters all contained what appeared to be intimate knowledge of the inner workings of the ASUNM Senate.

Progressive slate seeks to give students a voice

Editor, PAC - Progressive Action Coalition - represents a slate of candidates running in the ASUNM elections. PAC is comprised of a diverse group of students who have come together to create progressive change for the University. ASUNM exists to represent the concerns of the people this University was built to serve - the students.

Change in Iraq necessary; withdrawing troops risky

Editor, In her letter in Monday's Daily Lobo, Jenna Hall urged us to think of ourselves as global citizens. She also called for an immediate withdrawal of American troops from Iraq. As global citizens, it would be extremely reckless to immediately withdraw all our troops.

Drivers on campus should slow down for pedestrians

Editor, I recently came to visit a friend who is a student at UNM. She lives in the dorms. I am considering coming to school here, but I had a concern when I was crossing the street at the crosswalk. As my friend and I were heading toward Alvarado Hall, I noticed that people driving on Redondo Road do not obey the speed limit, especially in the crosswalk.

Bringing troops home, ending war a moral duty

Editor, As a student and registered voter, I hope that those of us who decided to cast our ballots last Tuesday don't continue to settle for mediocrity in the House of Representatives and the Senate. I feel that it is our moral duty as educated citizens of the U.

Progressive slate brings fresh ideas, new energy

Editor, Last semester, I was involved in the creation of PAC - the Progressive Action Coalition - for the purpose of bringing together progressive and ethnic groups to work better with each other and to make UNM more culturally diverse. We ran a progressive slate for student government in which I ran for vice president.

ASUNM senators ignore diversity, other concerns

Editor, This is in response to the letter in Thursday's Daily Lobo by Matt Beck, an ASUNM senator. While I, alongside other students here at UNM, were angered by tuition increases, what angered me more was how ASUNM sat back and did nothing. It's the only thing it seems to be good at these days - doing nothing that interests students as a whole.

Common sense dictates that Bush must be ousted

Editor, The Bush administration continues to pursue a failed policy in Iraq even after the National Intelligence Estimate said its policy has increased aggravations and terrorism in the world. Numerous military experts, such as Gen. Anthony Zinni and Eric Shinseki, have said the war was a fiasco from the beginning.

Daily Lobo responsible for missing information

Editor, The Daily Lobo has no one to blame for an incomplete article except itself, and as editor in chief, I hold Riley Bauling responsible. A comprehensive article of the candidates' main issues should have been an easy article to produce, since an election is not exactly late-breaking news.
