Letter: Multilingualism in media is incredibly important

Editor, I want to applaud the Daily Lobo for its International Issue — what a wonderful glimpse of the diversity that we are! It was a joy to see Tasawar Shah, one of my linguistically gifted doctoral students, featured along with other international students. By publishing this multilingual issue, the Daily Lobo put itself far ahead of all mainstream newspapers, even those with massive circulations and ahead of most online media as well. Bravo!

Letter: When Barbara Bush said damn

Editor, I've always admired Barbara Bush. Like millions of others, I was saddened to hear about her declining health and then recent death. Many television tributes and well-deserved accolades have been verbalized in recent days. Her beautiful funeral service and all that was said from their Houston Episcopal Church was a tribute to one of America's finest ladies. I had the opportunity to have my picture taken with the first lady many years ago.

Green Issue — Column: The case for cannabis

Cannabis can go by many names — marijuana, ganja, weed, grass, sticky-icky or dank. Regardless of the name, cannabis has been used and cultivated for thousands of years. With more than 1,000 different types of strains, it’s hard to believe that an ancient plant has made it to the top of the United States’ scheduled list of controlled substances, alongside heroin, all while cannabis’ medical properties continue to be overlooked by politicians with the help of pro-pharmaceutical lobbyists.

Green Issue — Column: Plant ownership can have many benefits

I don’t have the famous green thumb that usually coincides with being a good plant owner — in fact it’s fair to say I have quite the opposite. Despite my terrible track record of killing plant after plant, a friend gave me the final push to try one more time, but this time, with plants I can actually keep alive. Although owning cacti and succulents is a fairly new hobby of mine, it’s in step with a wide-spread trend. Owning plants is definitely “in” right now, but so is plant-themed decor. I can’t put my finger on why this trend has emerged, but I’m certainly not complaining.

Green Issue — Column: Five ways to make cash on the side

In today’s world, finding a job can be difficult. As a college student, balancing the demands of a job and school can be complicated, but necessary to pay for college, which is why students are always trying to find extra ways to earn money. When you think of side hustling, you often think of bugging all your Facebook friends trying to sell them cosmetics or something they don’t really need. But there are other options for students to make a little extra money on the side — here are five.

Letter: Freedom is winning in the Encryption Arms Race

Editor, At tax time in the U.S., as Gaurav Sangwani of India's Financial Express reports, many American cryptocurrency users weren't interested in discussing that aspect of their lives with the Internal Revenue Service. In an early April TeamBlind survey of 2,600 people who earned money from crypto, 46 percent said they wouldn't be reporting those earnings to Uncle Sam. Meanwhile, per Investopedia's Nathan Reiff, fewer than 100 of Credit Karma Tax's 250,000 most recent filers had reported cryptocurrency transactions as of April 13.

Green Issue — Column: Where to eat while stoned

For many, smoking weed and food are synonymous with one another. With 4/20 getting closer, there are plenty of places to get your eat on when the munchies hit, especially near campus. As a self-proclaimed food savant, I will take you through the five best places to eat while stoned. But first...

Letter: Earth would be healthier if we stopped owning cars

Editor, Seventeen years ago, April 7 was the last time I rode in any car! I have not owned a car for 38 years. I condemn wars for oil! I condemn fracking. Cars cause catastrophic climate chaos. Cars poison the air. Highways, streets, parking lots and garages smother millions of acres of fertile soil needed for growing food and trees. Trees soak up the greenhouse gas, carbon dioxide, and provide needed oxygen. I save much money! No car repairs, no parking and traffic tickets, no car vandalism, no flat tires, no car insurance, no monthly payments, no car theft.

Letter: ASUNM needs to be proactive with protecting the Lottery Scholarship

I appreciated reading the Daily Lobo’s recent article about the history of the Lottery Scholarship, as it is extremely concerning to many students that the Lottery Scholarship is covering less and less of our tuition every year. As reported, students almost lost more scholarship funding during this past 2018 legislative session because of a bill that would have eliminated the law guaranteeing the scholarship fund 30 percent of lottery revenues and replacing that guarantee with a $38 million, later $40 million, floor. As it was introduced, this bill provided no incentive for the New Mexico Lottery to ever expand our scholarship fund, or even continue to provide the $42 million a year that it has received on average for the past decade.

Column: Facebook may be to blame for strong political divide

Waking up and browsing Facebook is a common, often daily activity for the average individual in this day and age. Just as common is the barrage of memes and graphics plastered across the screen when logging in. These memes and graphics vary in accuracy, with some ranging from insanely inaccurate to strangely true. One graphic circulating on the site can be filed under the strangely true category.

Trump is a farce of genuine conservatism

Editor, Trump road the slimmest of victories to the presidency only 17 months ago. He got there through the support of conservatives from the right wing upset about the former president’s policies. In the short time since, the president has managed to increase the federal deficit more so than any other comparable period of any other president in all of American history.

Letter: Libertarian and Republican politics are socially harmful

Editor, It is common to hear Republicans and Libertarians say that less government is the solution to people's problems. This idea is not new and it has it's genesis in the writings of Thomas Robert Malthus. According to their Malthusian logic programs like food stamps, medicaid, social security and affirmative action should be eliminated, because government should not interfere with the wild west capitalism. Malthus argued that human population growth would eventually exceed the amount of food that was being produced; therefore he concluded that war, disease and famine were necessary in order to not exhaust the planet's limited resources.

International Issue: Column — Esperanto : The universal international language / Kolumno — Esperanto: la universala internacia lingvo

Esperanto is sometimes referred to as “the International Language,” according to esperanto.net. Unlike traditional languages, such as English, Spanish or Chinese, which have naturally emerged over many hundreds or even thousands of years, Esperanto was intentionally invented by one person. Esperanto estas foje nomata "Internacia Lingvo" laŭ esperanto.net. Kontraste al tradiciaj lingvoj, kiel ekzemple la angla, hispana aŭ ĉina, kiuj nature evoluis dum multaj centoj aŭ eĉ miloj da jaroj, Esperanton intence inventis unu persono.

International Issue — Column: Xenophobia must be recognized and fought/Columna: La xenofobia debe ser reconocida y combatida

It is easy to claim — on behalf of a nation, on behalf of a generation, on behalf of yourself as an individual — a progressive attitude much too advanced for destructive, discriminatory ideologies. It is easy to believe and maintain that you see beyond borders, that a common identity as humans makes differences in nationalities or cultures immaterial and arbitrary. Es fácil reclamar — en nombre de una nación, en nombre de una generación, en nombre de usted como individuo — una actitud progresista demasiada avanzada para ideologías destructivas y discriminatorias.
