Letter: Professor questions how to teach creation myths

Editor, I read Maceo Carillo-Martinet's column concerning religion and science published in last week's Daily Lobo with great interest. As a scientist, my first inclination was to ask him about his thoughts concerning the underlying epistemology of science - that miracles and supernatural explanations are not accepted as scientific explanation.

Editorial: Students continue to foot the bill for UNM

It seems like UNM students are always picking up the tab. When administrators were putting together the University's budget for next year, they wanted to raise tuition 12 percent to pay for everything money from the state didn't pay for. Now, the administration wants students to pay for renovations of educational facilities.

Letter: UNM should be careful with campus water use

Editor, New Mexico recently had a record-breaking spring season for precipitation, so it is easy to think that water conservation is the last thing UNM should be worrying about. But take a look at the land you live on - it's a desert. Those green grassy fields and brilliantly colored flowers are not natural products of the harsh region of the Southwest.

Letter: Science, Creationist ideas go hand in hand

Editor, Darwinians and Creationists agree - they just don't know it. Reading last week's Daily Lobo opinion column entitled "Teach all sides of origin," I once again am saddened by the fanatics on both sides. There is a fundamental problem with the author's statement, "With a Western scientific paradigm comes the acceptance that life was not created for any purpose or with any goal, but is an outcome of many years of random, physically based occurrences.

Letter:Doubting Bush gets one labeled America hater

Editor, The world just keeps getting more and more bizarre. The pathology affecting the psychotic morons who control it get more illogical and hypocritical every day. In the last few weeks, the Bush administration criticized Newsweek for running a story about interrogators at Guantanamo Bay flushing the Quran down the toilet - not that such an incident occurred, but that they ran the story.

Letter:Caldera fails to educate, puts UNM's image first

Editor, I am concerned with President Caldera's characterization of the problem facing the University of New Mexico. I never graduated from high school. I scrambled from humble community-college beginnings to ultimately receive a highly competitive fellowship at UNM's Latin American and Iberian Institute, and for the past several semesters have taught precisely the student population at issue in the Daily Lobo's story on the proposed stiffening of UNM admissions criteria.

Column:Teach all sides of origin

by Maceo Carrillo Martinet Daily Lobo Earlier this month there was a court hearing over proposed changes on how to teach the theory of evolution in schools. The debate took place in Kansas, but received both national and international attention. Kansas is no newcomer to the debate between religion ...

Letter: Photo issue deserves better presentation

Editor, Congratulations on a well-done issue showcasing the photographic efforts of the University community. While I am happy to see any publication offering a forum to photographers utilizing their best medium, it would be nice to see it presented with as much quality as possible.

Letter: Extreme religious right represent intolerance

Editor, Enough with the evangelicals. We gave them a hearing. They've had their day in court and here's a frightening sample of their views: R. Albert Mohler Jr. of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary called the papacy a "false and unbiblical office.

Letter:APD's actions need to be monitored, dealt with

Editor, Albuquerque citizens should be aware of the huge problem in this city with unchecked acts of police brutality and the use of excessive force by Albuquerque Police Department officers. They should also know how the mayor has chosen to deal with this problem.

Letter:Four Corners power plant threatens all NM citizens

Editor, There will be a rally on June 18 at Shiprock Park in Shiprock to help stop the proposed Desert Rock Power Plant in the Four Corners area. This is an important issue I believe should be covered by the media. Albuquerque residents are not part of the Four Corners region, but the proposed Desert Rock Power Plant is a coal-fired plant that would emit 3,400 tons of mercury and ozone into the air - this would affect Albuquerque's air - so this is not just an environmental justice issue for the residents of Four Corners, but a public health and safety issue for us all.

Editorial:UNM shouldn't shun remedial students

A group of students, teachers, regents and community members have sent UNM President Louis Caldera back to the drawing board. Caldera decided last week to review his proposal to defer the admission of potential students who require remedial coursework, largely because of the aggressive and negative public response and lack of support from UNM regents.

UNM health insurance costs more than it should

Editor, To all UNM employees: Have you thought about your insurance coverage at UNM? Why is the premium so high? I am a single person with no family --- I pity those with families who have to deal with this. My coverage is going to cost me $164 per month.

A warning to students:UNM obsessed with profit

Editor, As my time at UNM draws to a close, I'd like to reflect on a few key things regarding this University that I feel future and current undergrads could benefit from. Students are on the bottom of the totem pole, and I feel they should be on the top.

Letter: Gallery closure shows an indifference to art

Editor, I write this letter in response to the infuriating news that the Art Student Association gallery in the Student Union Building is soon to be replaced with a workout room. I'm not sure why ASUNM is hell-bent on destroying all of the cultural enclaves of the flagship university in New Mexico, but it is doing a bang-up job.

Letter: NetID an important tool for University community

Editor, The recent Daily Lobo stories and letters about the use of the UNM NetID in this spring's GPSA election provide an opportunity to clarify some details about the UNM NetID. Several years ago, CIRT gave a new name to the computer account log-on identification it provides to the general UNM community.

Editorial: Politicians mixing up incarceration priorities

With anti-terror efforts taking precedence over the American war on drugs, one would think since less resources are available, they would be focused on the deadliest, most hard-core drugs, such as cocaine, heroin and methamphetamine. Instead, though the United States spends an estimated $35 billion every year on the drug war, the easing of the crack epidemic has led to a major increase in arrests and prosecutions for, of all things, marijuana possession.

Letter: Awareness not enough when dealing with scams

Letter: Neglected art students may take money elsewhere

Editor, This university never ceases to amaze me. What's next? Let's turn the craft studio into another Sonic. When we're finished eating our burgers, we can work it out and then go drip sweat over the keyboards across the hall. I yearn for the day when art students take their talent and money elsewhere to some other mediocre university that at least pretends to give one iota about art students' overall contribution.
