LETTER: Protest groups likely allied with Marxism

Editor, Steve Chavez's guest column outlining the insidious influence that communist and radical socialist groups have on the local "peace movement" only scratches the surface of this shadowy world. If you navigate the Stop the War Machine's Web site, the first link in the "Other Resources" section of the site is to the International ANSWER (Act Now to Stop War and End Racism) organization.

COLUMN: U.S. shows hypocrisy by disregarding rights

by Lenzy Krehbiel Daily O’Collegian (Oklahoma State U.) (U-WIRE) STILLWATER, Okla. — Over the past few decades, hypocrisy has become a standard in this country. Our national anthem calls America the “land of the free,” yet racial profiling is now acceptable to many in certain circumstances in light of recent events.

by Ashley Pierson Iowa State Daily (Iowa State U.) (U-WIRE) AMES, Iowa — Imagine you are living it up out in Las Vegas, gambling all your hard-earned dough and buying drinks left and right for you, your seven closest friends and the fat, rich, balding businessman you just met at the craps table.

LETTER: Legalizing cannabis not a dangerous act

Editor, Eric Howerton did a good job of explaining the irrationality and irresponsibility of the anti-marijuana ads plastering the air waves. He also shows some understanding of the history of marijuana laws. So, I can’t understand how he came to such an absurd conclusion that legalization would be dangerous until we change our attitudes about marijuana use.

COLUMN: Many peace groups corrupt

by Steve Chavez Daily Lobo Guest Columnist In the 1980’s, many peace groups marched against U.S. policy in Central America. I began attending some of their meeting in 1986. I also began intense research on the groups and I am now doing the same with the groups of today.

LETTER: Hidden motives in drug war

Editor, Truth to tell, the drug warrior politicians, officials, media and civilians secretly don’t list victory as an objective in their expensive and oppressive trillion-dollar war. When they do spout their “zero tolerance/total victory” rhetoric, how many of your readers actually believe them? How many actually believe that this year’s multibillion-dollar drug war budget will be the one that will achieve total victory after decades of billion dollar budgets have totally failed? Just remember that the drug czars’ and warriors’ jobs depend on the perpetual prosecution of, but never a victory in, the drug war.

LETTER: Question of fairness in countries’ jurisdictions

Editor, The question of fairness regarding Belgium’s right to prosecute Ariel Sharon for an alleged war crime 21 years ago in Lebanon is debatable for sure. The conduct of Ariel Sharon as Israeli Defense Minister 21 years ago in Lebanon is not. The practice of “universal jurisdiction” over war crimes or crimes against humanity is hardly limited to the “Maryland-sized country” of Belgium.

COLUMN: Anti-pot ads deceive youth

Most people have become so habituated to seeing commercials that media advertisements are viewed uncritically regardless of content. However, a recent series of anti-marijuana propaganda ads begs analysis. The portrayal of drug use in the commercials paid for by the White House Office of National Drug Policy show the "reality" behind drug use.

COLUMN: Pesticides do one thing: kill

by Richard "Bugman" Fagerlund Daily Lobo Columnist Pest management on campus is much different now than the way we controlled pests when I started in the business in Florida more than 30 years ago. In those days we relied almost exclusively on pesticides and various chemicals to control pests.

COLUMN: Sex education needs effective alternative

by Patrick Harvey Cavalier Daily (U. Virginia) (U-WIRE) CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- President Bush is now trying to put a U-turn on the sexual revolution by planning to increase spending on abstinence-only programs by $60 million this year. This increased spending should not be spent on restrictive abstinence-only programs, because they are ineffective and do not match popular conceptions about sexuality.

EDITORIAL: MTV dedicates time to war

Staff Editorial Daily Forty-Niner (California State U.-Long Beach) (U-WIRE) LONG BEACH, Calif. -- MTV is not known for its intellectual cult following like, say, the History Channel or PBS is. One can expect a certain degree of cheap, empty programming when tuning in to the channel that was originally dedicated to dummying down music.
