LETTER: Question of fairness in countries’ jurisdictions

Editor, The question of fairness regarding Belgium’s right to prosecute Ariel Sharon for an alleged war crime 21 years ago in Lebanon is debatable for sure. The conduct of Ariel Sharon as Israeli Defense Minister 21 years ago in Lebanon is not. The practice of “universal jurisdiction” over war crimes or crimes against humanity is hardly limited to the “Maryland-sized country” of Belgium.

COLUMN: Anti-pot ads deceive youth

Most people have become so habituated to seeing commercials that media advertisements are viewed uncritically regardless of content. COLUMN: Sex education needs effective alternative

by Patrick Harvey Cavalier Daily (U. Virginia) (U-WIRE) CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- President Bush is now trying to put a U-turn on the sexual revolution by planning to increase spending on abstinence-only programs by $60 million this year. EDITORIAL: MTV dedicates time to war

Staff Editorial Daily Forty-Niner (California State U.-Long Beach) (U-WIRE) LONG BEACH, Calif. -- MTV is not known for its intellectual cult following like, say, the History Channel or PBS is. COLUMN: Aiming for steps forward

by Heather Gabel ASUNM Vice President As I sit staring at the computer, I wonder what I should tell the student body this week. Of course, I also ponder the question, "I wonder if anyone actually reads these?" As an optimist I assume that everyone is reading these columns and becoming highly versed in the comings and goings of their student body.

Editorial: Grammys surprise every once in awhile

Staff Editorials Minnesota Daily (U. Minnesota) (U-WIRE) MINNEAPOLIS -- It is Grammy time again. On Sunday night some very well known American and European pop stars -- some talented, some not -- will be feted for their musical achievements. The awards show will present major pop and rock record labels a rare opportunity to feel positive about their recording artists' successes; during the last several years record companies' revenues have declined precipitously.
