LETTER: Affirmative action in need of revision

Editor, Affirmative action is in the news once again. Conservatives are everywhere in the media telling us how affirmative action is bad for the United States. And, the conservative spins are quite problematic. Let's take at two of the more common ones.

COLUMN: Ending legal abortion won't solve problems

by Ayrel Clark Iowa State Daily (Iowa State U.) (U-WIRE) AMES, Iowa -- Is this the face of the enemy? This is a question posed on a flier to all those meandering around Room 2050 in Agronomy Hall. This is a rather interesting inquiry. Who is my enemy? Is the enemy of my friend my enemy? Does that make the friend of my enemy also my enemy? Are you confused yet? I certainly am.

COLUMN: Parking Services deceitful

Bill has a subscription to the local newspaper. One morning he notices that his paper has not been delivered. "I'm terribly sorry," says the periodical representative, "but we only print so many papers, and, well, not everyone can get their paper all the time, right?" Sally buys a movie ticket but before she can enter the theater, she is stopped by an employee.

COLUMN: Athletes not exploited

by Andy Fahey Mustang Daily (California Poly State U.) (U-WIRE) SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- As the movie "Blue Chips" clearly pointed out, it's no secret that some college athletes get paid to play. The practice of showering NCAA athletes with gifts, whether in the form of currency, cars or other commodities, is obviously wrong.

LETTER: Oil not worth the price of blood, life

Editor, Todd J. Burns' letter on Tuesday asks that we support our soldiers, whether we agree with invading Iraq or not, and that we help them come home to their families and friends. No one has anything against the soldiers. The fastest way for them to be with their families is not to go.

LETTER: Students face growing tuition

by Amalea Smirniotopoulos Washington Square News (New York U.) (U-WIRE) NEW YORK -- Last Thursday, Great Britain's Labor government announced plans to change the way the nation's higher education system is financed, proposing that universities be allowed to charge students higher tuition fees and allowing them to defer payment until graduation.

COLUMN: OK, so don't follow leaders

by Sari Krosinsky Daily Lobo columnist It appears my column last week requires some explanation. So here it is: I was being sarcastic. That being said, I'm glad people who took that column literally were angry. You should be angry. Not just because some schmuck is telling you to follow the leader, but because that is what the purpose of government actually is.

LETTER: Once elected, officials not allowed to run free

Editor, Noam Chomsky has remarked before that the citizens of the United States are expected to show up at the polls every four years, cast their ballot, then go home and shut up. Nowhere is this illustrated more clearly than in the comments of Sari Krosinsky and U.

PROFILES: UNM grad goes Hollywood

There are no guarantees that you'll get a job after college or even grad school, but if you work hard, meet the right people and "accidentally be in the right place at the right time," you'll achieve anything. At least, that's what Christopher Painter insists.

LETTER: Protest government actions, not soldiers

Editor, It is a long way from home. Whether you are from San Diego, Calif., or Buffalo, N.Y., it is still a long way from home. Off to Iraq they go. They knew, as well as everyone else in the United States, that at some point they were going to be sent overseas, answering the call of their country.

COLUMN: Term rooted in bigotry

by Andrew Legrand Oklahoma Daily (U. Oklahoma) 01/23/2003 (U-WIRE) NORMAN, Okla. -- Get it straight, I am not a nigger. Nor am I a nigga. As a matter of fact let me clarify all the terms that you have no right to call me. Don't call me nig, nigg, nigra, nizzle, or any thing else that alludes to the derogatory term popularized by white oppressors against my African ancestors.

LETTER: Park column lacks empathy for poor

Editor, Eric Howerton's article "Police useless in Roosevelt" left me saddened over his obvious lack of empathy for homeless people. Is valuing a free game of Frisbee golf over the safety, health and well being of Albuquerque citizens the way UNM affiliates want to be portrayed? I, for one, do not.

LETTER: Howerton's column harsh with homeless

Editor, Eric Howerton wrote a delightfully satirical column about the various golf hazards Frisbee golfers face when playing at Roosevelt Park. Mr. Howerton explains that, instead of sand traps and other obstacles found at the average golf course, the Frisbee golf course at Roosevelt is plagued with homeless people, drug dealers who sell crack to elementary school children and rabid, leash-less dogs.

EDITORIAL: Loss of journalist big blow to UNM

The world just lost a great human being. The University lost a great teacher; the country lost one of its greatest journalists; the Daily Lobo and alumni of the student paper lost a great writing coach; and the community lost a valuable member when Henry Trewhitt died yesterday.
