Film prevents Affleck typecast

It's refreshing to know Ben Affleck still thinks about his acting amid all the press coverage of his love life. In a conference interview with Affleck, the subject was not his over-publicized personal life, but actually his role in the movie "Paycheck" directed by John Woo, which opens on Christmas.

Film's beauty outweighed by boredom

Artistic, beautifully scripted films made for and by the thinking man have become an acquired taste and in the case of "Le Cercle Rouge" or "The Red Circle," by French filmmaker Jean-Pierre Melville, the taste is more anchovy than caviar. This French action film, re-released with sub-titles by John Woo and Rialto Pictures, will be opening Aug.

Playwrights shine at Vortex

The Vortex Theatre is presenting a new play festival of homespun material opening this Friday in celebration of the theater's 26th anniversary. The festival, aptly named "Quickies," is a series of shorts with eight original new plays. The Vortex, a community theater, is known for taking risks, but in the last few months, its board seems to be making changes in its roster of shows, leaving the drug paraphernalia-filled plays behind in search of new types of experimentation.

Fan loyalties silence artists' opinions

What is the artist's role in today's society, especially in the United States after Sept. 11 and now the war with Iraq? I don't know and it seems to me that many artists don't really know either. Art can be political, social, economical, environmental, personal or all of the above, but what can artists do in a time when nothing about the future is certain? While watching the 75th Annual Academy Awards, the most widely recognized awards ceremony on Earth, I was soon consumed by the thought of whether any of the artists being honored would speak out about the war, especially with the backlash that occurred after lead singer of the Dixie Chicks, Natalie Maines, spoke her mind about President Bush.

Execution, scenery of ‘Crucible’ too perfect

3 Stars for Design, 4 Stars for Acting This production of “The Crucible” by Arthur Miller at the Albuquerque Little Theatre is a great representation of one of the most poignant plays in history. It is based on the Salem Witch Trials and was written by Miller during the McCarthy-Era witch hunts.

How to lose that guy

Why would you want to lose a guy in 10 days? Only if he's stalking you, or really butt ugly. There just so happens to be an instructional book with specific methods on how to lose a guy. The movie starring Matthew McConaughey and Kate Hudson is based on this book, but thank the screenwriters for coming up a better plot.

UNM grad goes Hollywood

There are no guarantees that you'll get a job after college or even grad school, but if you work hard, meet the right people and "accidentally be in the right place at the right time," you'll achieve anything. At least, that's what Christopher Painter insists.

'Frida' blends passion, pain well

Madstone, the new major independent movie theater in Albuquerque, only picks the best films to show and "Frida" is a beautiful film. It has all the beauty of one of Frida Kahlo's paintings, with an emphasis on the pain. It chronicles the story of Ms. Kahlo's life from the day she first spoke to Diego Rivera to the day her work was finally showcased in her home, Mexico.
