LETTER: Crosswalks need monitoring

Editor, I appreciate your recent article and attention to the issue of pedestrian safety. I believe this is an important issue, both on main and north campus. As a staff member and student, I spend quite a bit of time walking on campus. I would like to point out two other crosswalks that I feel are dangerous for those of us on north campus.

Editor's favortism shows

Editor, I think that you are the worst editor that I have ever seen editing the Daily Lobo in my four years at UNM and many years reading it during high school. I do not want you to take this as a personal attack, rather as a constructive (hopefully) critique of your time as editor of our university newspaper.

COLUMN: UNM community can give hope, food

Youth in Transition, a day shelter for homeless youth, has never been a stranger to hardship, and when the building was burned down on Thanksgiving, it only got worse. Youth in Transition lost all of its supplies, including food and winter clothes, and is presently in a state of emergency.

LETTER: Ice House's ambiguous string-pulling ad smutty

Editor, OK, so I've learned to live with opening the Lobo to find photos of women who've had overturned Tupperware Servin'Saver Bowls surgically inserted under the flesh of their ribcages. But what's with the Ice House ad? What is that string she's yan

COLUMN: Affirmative action could be of more use to poor

The Supreme Court's announcement to revaluate an ambiguous 1978 decision of affirmative action in higher education is indeed a polemic area that will galvanize flagrant outbursts on either side of the spectrum regardless of the final ruling. Several white students recently filed a lawsuit against the University of Michigan based on the rejection of their admission to the college's undergraduate law school.

COLUMN: Crime penalties need to be fair

by Lauren Chase Mustang Daily (California Poly State U.) U-Wire Leandro Andrade, a California man, was given a 50 years-to-life sentence for a third-strike crime of stealing "Cinderella," "Snow White" and "Free Willy" videos from K-Mart. But does the punishment fit the crime? California legislators believe so -- or at least that was their consensus eight years ago.

LETTER: Berthold's leaving a loss to free ideas

Editor, It is with sadness and regret that I learned about Professor Berthold's retirement. I was attending classes on the old GI Bill and I was fortunate enough to be his student back in 1977. I found him to be an excellent instructor with his door always open to his students.

COLUMN: Professor to miss students

by Richard M. Berthold Daily Lobo Columnist When fresh out of graduate school I joined the UNM faculty in 1972, I had a career in mind: move on to a more prestigious institution in a few years, become a full professor by 35, establish a national reputation.

COLUMN: Debates healthy for colleges

by Craig A. Butler Daily Lobo Columnist As this semester draws to a close, the end of an age is coming to UNM; after 30 years of teaching, Richard Berthold is leaving the University. After his monumentally regrettable comments on Sept. 11 of last year, it was only a matter of time before Berthold left UNM.

LETTER: Torching of youth drop-in center sad

Editor, The torching of the Youth in Transition drop-in center on Thanksgiving evening requires some sobering self-examination. I'm familiar with YIT. I've seldom seen an agency accomplish so much with so few resources. YIT serves homeless young people who have fallen through the cracks of mainstream systems of care.

Letter: Officials, not bar owners responsible

Editor, Like many people in this country, Sharon Bailey has things fundamentally wrong when she asserts that the "right" way to resolve the public smoking issue is to let business owners decide because we have a "free-market system" and "that's the way things work.

LETTER: War research not part of higher education

Editor, I think UNM President Chris Garcia missed the point with his endorsement of military security clearances at the school (Albuquerque Journal, Monday, Nov. 25.) The point to be questioned is why does anyone at a public institution of higher education engage in war research, secret or unclassified? These two institutions of our society, higher education and the Pentagon, are at odds in their goals, missions and methods of work and should be kept separate.

It's that time of year again: the week before finals. For those in the UNM community who are experiencing their first semester at the University, the editors at the Daily Lobo have a little tradition. We write a little editorial begging for a Dead Week.

COLUMN: Revolution can change politics

by Chris Meeske Chicago Maroon (U. Chicago) U-Wire The most disturbing trend of American politics of the last decade has been the decisive seizure of the national political discourse by the right. For all of the progress made and popular support enjoyed by the left, there has been a complete lack of strong leadership, little or no coordination between the disparate elements of the left, and no cohesive plan of action.
