LETTER: Kiska's suggestion violates federal act

Editor, The headline for M. Lourdes Brito's letter in last Thursday's Daily Lobo should have said "Kiska's retirement comment illegal" rather than merely "petty." What Mr. Kiska suggested to the Board of Regents at its committee meeting on Nov. 5 is not only offensive - it is also a violation of the federal Age Discrimination Act of 1975.

COLUMN: Modest proposal for C&J

by Sari Krosinsky Daily Lobo columnist There have been quite a few naysayers to the Communication and Journalism Department's decision to withdraw its application for accreditation. I, however, must take department chairman Brad Hall's part, and say that this decision bodes to be a great boon for students.

LETTER: Ads linking alcohol, sex forum's theme

Editor, During the past several months, the UNM Women's Resource Center has noticed, and been alarmed by, the increased number of advertisements in the Lobo which connect alcohol consumption to sexual activity. This link, sex and alcohol, is especially troubling given the trend of binge drinking among college students and the statistics regarding sexual assault (one in three women and one in five men).

LETTER: No accreditation does not mean end of world

Editor, As we all know, last month the journalism faculty unanimously voted to withdraw from the reaccredidation process. Is this the best news for the department? No! Nor is it the end of the world. So what is the next step? Our faculty realized it was better to withdraw than to fail.

COLUMN: An end of semester overview

by Heather Gabel ASUNM vice president We are nearing the tail end of the semester and we all know what that means. Suddenly it feels as if everything is due all at once! I know that with all the extra schoolwork it is hard to remember what is going on with your student government.

COLUMN: Good guys never come out winners

by Mike Still Daily Collegian U-Wire Attention first-year men: If you are a so-called nice guy, you're going to get much less action than aggressive jerks do. You know that guy who lives down the hall from you and acts all tough like he's Vin Diesel's idiot brother? Yeah, he's going to score much more than you for the next four years.

COLUMN: Reserve excuses for victims

by Calvin Hennick The Daily Iowan U-Wire One year from now, Pierre Pierce will have a clean record - no mention of the third-degree sexual assault with which he was initially charged, not even a trace of the assault causing injury to which he eventually pled guilty.

LETTER: Letter asking to vote pro-choice unsettling

Editor, Kimberly Lavender's pro-choice appeal in Monday's Daily Lobo was an unfortunate and startling reminder that there are some people who really would like to perpetuate the scourge of abortion in America. Like Ms. Lavender, they talk of a woman's right to choose, which is patently absurd inasmuch as the abortion license undermines and destroys the very basis of our human rights, namely our unique value and dignity as human persons.

LETTER: Brewster's bouncer wrongly rewarded

Editor, I was amazed to read that CASAA has rewarded Brewster's Pub for denying entrance to a pregnant woman. I truly hope that other establishments like Brewster's do not follow suit. Jerome Romero, CASAA's project director, is quoted in the Oct. 28 Lobo as saying ". we appreciate [Brewster's employees] putting themselves on the line for someone else's best interest.

LETTER: Kiska's retirement-age comment petty

Editor, I am responding to Mr. Kiska's comments in the Wednesday, Nov. 6 regent's article: "there is a problem with University employees that have reached retirement age." I resent Mr. Kiska's insinuations that employees he feels should "be retired" are worthless to this institution.

COLUMN: Not voting wastes a privilege

Daily Lobo Columnist If you don't vote, you're trespassing. As an idealist, I believe that a post-gubernatorial column is worthwhile as long as it encourages at least one individual who consciously threw their license to vote in the gutter on Tuesday to vote next year.

LETTER: Tax dollars should go to fund future elections

Editor, Once again I find myself in disagreement with Craig Butler's editorial commentary, this time concerning public financing of elections. Mr. Butler states that public financing infringes on "the long-standing tradition that campaign contributions are a form of free speech" and concludes that the "switch to positive campaigning will have to come from somewhere else.

COLUMN: C&J chairman far too flippant about worries

Daily Lobo Culture Editor Brad Hall, the Communication and Journalism chairman, says everything's fine like someone just asked him if his day is going OK. He says essentially that the accreditation team had some concerns, but really, it doesn't matter because accreditation is an archaic and outdated technique used by bureaucrats to glean money from unsuspecting universities.

LETTER: Journalism accreditation loss taken far too lightly

Editor, Kudos and congratulations are in order for the University of New Mexico! Way to go, losing your accreditation for the journalism program in the C&J Department. After all, it was just one more pesky thing that the school had to do to prove it was an upper-level institution of higher learning.

LETTER: C&J chairman lacks leadership qualities

Editor, I read Thursday's edition of the Lobo with a real sense of disappointment and disgust upon learning that for the first time in 50 years, the UNM journalism program will not be receiving accreditation from the Accrediting Council in Journalism and Mass Communications.

COLUMN: Some ads needlessly vicious

by Craig A. Butler Daily Lobo Columnist Well, the election is over. Once again the campaign season was long, competitive and at many times downright nasty. Despite every candidate's professed dislike for attack ads, our airwaves have been filled with mudslinging so thick that it's hard for anyone exposed to it to feel clean.
