COLUMN: Sniper coverage terrible

by Sean Misko Daily Collegian U-Wire With suspects in custody for the D.C.-area snipings, the people of suburban Washington can collectively exhale in relief for now - so too can the American public, which for the past three weeks has been subjected to endless, round-the-clock coverage of the sniper.

COLUMN: Gay prejudice still exists for adoptions

by Anat Maytal Harvard Crimson U-Wire Steve Lofton is not your typical deadbeat foster dad. Under his care, he has voluntarily raised five infants that no one else would take in. He has provided shelter, food and a loving home. He even quit his job in order to attend full-time to his foster children's medical needs, which ranged from developmental problems to testing positive for the HIV virus.

LETTER: Column on discovery of coffin praiseworthy

Editor, I was pleasantly surprised to read the column by Craig Butler about the recent discovery of the possible coffin of James (Jesus' brother.) Since I am often guilty of publicly (and privately) railing against this paper (regarding it's liberal bias), then I certainly want to take a moment to praise you for even allowing a column, which addresses spiritual issues.

LETTER: 'Red Meat' would complement Lobo

Editor, As a daily reader of your newspaper, I have become quite familiar with its format and general viewpoint. I have also become quite familiar with the comic strips that appear on the final page - perhaps even too familiar. While some are good, I must admit that, in my personal opinion some are not.

by Ken Olum Tufts Daily U-Wire "If I were to change the names, a description of what is happening in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank could describe events in South Africa." - Archbishop Desmond Tutu, December 1989. LETTER: Lobo treats travelers graciously for article

Editor, I would like to thank Clay Holtzman and photographer Lewis Jacobs for the excellent article "World Travelers visit UNM," which appeared in the in the Oct. 23 edition of the Daily Lobo. Their gracious treatment of these foreign guests was gratifying and their patience in conducting a careful, in-depth interview, in spite of the challenges of working with an amateur interpreter (me), produced a favorable impression on the visitors and a complete and accurate report on their journey around the world.

COLUMN: Pumpkins quirky, interesting

by Ben Everett Columbia Daily Spectator U-Wire I tried free-associating on the word "pumpkin" this morning, and came up with the following: necromancy, lust, good clean fun, muffins. Weird. But also fitting - pumpkins are strange things. After all, what other fruit takes the pan-American spotlight only two days every year, first as a festive lantern, then as a festive pie? To boot, pumpkins tend to pop up in fairy tales, transmogrified into bulbous carriages or blown up to the size of Volkswagens.

COLUMN: Ballistic fingerprints faulty

Terror inspires faith even in the most flawed of plans. With the yet-to-be-named sniper lurking around our nation's capital, riddling innocent bystanders with bullets, anxiety is aroused and solutions are demanded. In times of crisis, fear and paranoia are louder than reason.

COLUMN: Iraq issue hurting Democrats

by Brian Wagner Columbia Daily Spectator U-Wire It has become quite obvious to politicians that Iraq is going to be the largest influence on the 2002 election season. Democrats, so sure of gaining congressional seats just weeks ago, are now scared of losing seats because their issues are being overshadowed by the Bush administration's sharp focus on Iraq.

Column: Human nature overrated?

by Sari Krosinsky Daily Lobo columnist I've often argued that it's pointless to base any argument on human nature, because it's virtually impossible to distinguish between which human attributes are the result of nature and which the result of learning, or even of a combination of the two.
