COLUMN: Safety comes from self-protection

by Sari Krosinsky Daily Lobo Columnist A rape allegation has made its way into the newspaper again. So now everyone gets to spend the next couple of weeks talking about campus safety - at least when we're not busy with finals.

LETTER: Editor won't bother to speak with students

Once again I go to pick up a copy of the Daily Lobo, only to find an article written by Ms. Lim¢n that has only maybe half the facts. Does she ever do any research when she writes or does she just sit down on her computer and let her fingers do all the work?

LETTER: Faculty changes tied to students

First, boy, do I just enjoy the word evolution - a process of change in a particular direction! In the context of the unquestionably long and fascinating history of this fragile sphere we all call home, it means that change is simply a constant.

EDITORIAL: Editor bids farewell

After four years working in one place, it is really hard to say goodbye, but change is constant and comes regardless of whether you are ready for it.

LETTER: Sigma Chi ruling overdue

While I am ecstatic to see that the seedy Greek underbelly of UNM is finally getting some much needed attention by way of Sigma Chi's charter revocation, I am appalled that it took so many incidents to garner this notice.

EDITORIAL: Gordon deserves praise

While it is hard to convince the majority of people on this campus to agree on anything, the consensus after UNM President Bill Gordon announced his retirement was that he would be sorely missed.

LETTER: Muslim exhibit too anti-Israeli

I have some pressing concerns regarding Tuesday's Muslim Student Association's anti-Israeli exhibit. The degree of pro-Palestinian bias and spin present in the display appalled me to say the least. If the Muslim Student Association's supposed goal was to educate people about the conflict in the Middle East, it clearly failed.

COLUMN: Nationalism could lead to war

The recent success of French nationalist Jean-Marie Le Pen over Socialist Prime Minister Lionel Jospin and the recent waves of anti-Semitic violence in France are worrisome indicators of a new wave of European nationalist sentiment. Not since the 1940s have nationalist and xenophobic feelings run so high in western European countries, and it may be that time has dulled memories of the horrors those feelings helped produce in the first half of the twentieth century.

LETTER: No logical reason behind

As the year winds down and the Daily Lobo is nearing its final week of publication, UNM finds itself without a president. In search for a new president, I hope that person will have an active interest in the activities of our students.

COLUMN: Necessity, not laws, will save Earth

Earth Day is one of those events that has become untouchable by any person that would question the motivations, practices or aims of those that advocate any kind of activist environmentalism. Opponents to the regulation-based environmentalism of the current environmental movement are routinely depicted as the sorts that would kill puppies for a buck, end sunshine to drive an SUV or that feel a need to consume all natural resources before their selfish children grow up and use them all.
