Sleep essential to healthy lifestyle
Carol WagnerAdams | June 28Sleep is one of the most understated aspects of wellness. Research is empirically demonstrating how critical sound and regular sleep is to health, mental alertness and staying even-tempered.
School teaches intolerance by firing Wiccan instructor
June 28The recent dismissal of a teacher accused of being a witch from a school in New York is a reprehensible return to the Salem witch-hunts, which were commonplace in the early history of our country. Witches, or more properly Wiccans, are no more dangerous, evil or despicable than any other religious group. On the contrary, I would rather have my kids taught by a Wiccan teacher than by a Christian fundamentalist.
Marriage and law don’t mix
Sari Krosinsky | June 21Emma Goldman once said, “There are today large numbers of men and women to whom marriage is naught but a farce, but who submit to it for the sake of public opinion.”
Entire state will pay for area code
June 21Change is a part of life. It’s natural that we are resistant new ideas or ways of doing things because it forces us out of our comfort zones. I’ve always tried to embrace change as a challenge and opportunity, but Albuquerque’s new area code lacks a ring of virtue that would allow me to find a silver lining.
Free speech not protection for disrespect of Virgin
June 21Editor, This is a response to your editorial in the June 6-13 Daily Lobo, “Protestors forget what the Virgin represents.” The title of your editorial betrays a certain arrogance on your part. I believe it is you and not the many who are protesting that forgets what the Virgin represents. She represents, yes, a strong woman, but also a humble, devout virtuous woman — a women who always deferred to the will of God. It is you, just like Alma L¢pez who just doesn’t get it.
Homeless need help year-round
Jeremy Reynalds | June 14Although it’s some months from Thanksgiving, the time when we all remember the homeless, Joy Junction, New Mexico’s largest emergency homeless shelter, will still take in individuals and entire families without roofs over their heads tonight.

Death penalty, even for McVeigh, isn’t justifiable
June 14Thousands of journalists were clamoring to best describe the emotion that embodied Monday’s execution of Timothy McVeigh.
Protesters forget what the Virgin represents
Iliana Limn | June 7Sometimes, the Roman Catholic Church just doesn’t get it. Neither do a lot of people who violently opposed artist Alma L¢pez’s “scandalous” rendering of the Virgin of Guadalupe.
Old political labels don’t apply
June 7Vermont Sen. James Jeffords’ defection from the Republican Party highlights the selfishness of the Bush administration. The Republican Party now faces a dilemma that could break its infamous reputation of running a tight ship that always votes the party line. The party must decide whether making money is more important than caring for our future.
Network problems fixed, NT servers were hacked
June 7Thank you for your coverage on the recent UNM Network problems. The intermittent connection and slowdown problems were corrected May 31. The situation was caused by a combination of network upgrade problems, incompatibility issues between some UNM department-specific equipment and UNM Network devices and another series of denial-of-service attacks, which were coincidental and compounded the other two problems.
Web Exclusive: Jeffords right to stand up to bullies
June 7I could not be more proud of Senator Jeffords of Vermont. It is encouraging to know that independent, thoughtful people exist in Washington who place the needs of their country and constituents ahead of the needs of the Republican or Democratic Parties.
Downtown needs more than a stadium to thrive
May 31I love baseball, but something about Wednesday’s special election just didn’t sit well with me. It wasn’t the question of using city money to support baseball. I have no problem endorsing a recreational activity that has long been part of the city’s culture.
Routine, annoying moth outbreak will soon be over
May 31The moth outbreak on campus and around the city is not an unusual occurrence. It happens every few years, depending on the previous winter weather.
Trigger-happy discipline is wrong
Craig A. Butler | May 31Tuesday night, Estero High School in Estero, Fla., held its graduation ceremonies. One of the graduating seniors was not allowed to attend. Lindsay Brown, a National Merit Scholar and honor student who had never before been in trouble at school, was suspended for having a kitchen knife in her car.

May 7It is with great regret that I write this editorial to apologize to Daily Lobo readers and columnist Richard Berthold.
