UNM Athletics unsavory ethically and academically

Editor, The Albuquerque Tribune reported Thursday that The Sporting News ranked UNM 88th out of 115 schools playing Division-I sports. The magazine gave UNM an "F" for ethics based on the school's gender-equity policies, graduation rates and compliance with NCAA rules.

More to activism than voting

“We make war upon the state as the chief invader of person and property, as the cause of substantially all the crime and misery that exist, as itself the most gigantic criminal extant. It manufactures criminals faster than it punishes them. It exists to create and sustain the privileges that produce economic and social chaos.”

Tax cuts allow wealthy to provide jobs for the poor

Editor, Enrique Montoya’s Feb. 22 letter about the widening gap between the rich and poor show how indoctrinated we have become to see our country in only two different classes: One which unfairly has become rich and the other whose back the rich stepped on to get there.

Opportunity to debate theories appreciated

Editor, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the College of Arts & Sciences and the Departments of Psychology, Physics & Astronomy, Earth & Planetary Sciences, Biology and Chemistry for sponsoring my talk “Technical Problems with Intelligent Design Theory,” Feb. 19 at the Kiva Lecture Hall.

It’s as simple as a shot (dram) of whisk(e)y

Editor, While I agree with Brad Lord-Leutwyler that, for the most part, sports celebrities are not to be mistaken for heroes and that his letter should serve as a call to arms against Webster’s Dictionary — the editors advocate the synonomy of ‘ensure’ and ‘insure’ — I cannot deny the rage that springs from reading his Feb. 22 column.

Women and homosexuals still discrimination targets

Editor, Between the Sigma Chi incident and the Grammy Awards incident, some major shifts have been made in the area of political correctness. As a public service to the liberal clowns on my left and the conservative jokers on my right, lets look at what we’ve learned this week.

Heroes deserve recognition

Who is your hero? I only ask this because I have noticed a distinct lack of heroes in the world, at least the bona-fide type. I bring the whole thing up because, as is often the case, I overheard a conversation at Satellite Toys and Coffee.

Poll shows support for banning cockfighting

Editor, I am writing to inform readers about the horrific practice of cockfighting, since previous letters to the editor claim that this is part of New Mexico’s heritage that should be upheld, not outlawed. How utterly ridiculous and completely misinformed these people are!

Don’t dismiss theory so quickly

Monday, guest lecturer Philip Johnson, a law professor from the University of California at Berkeley, spoke for an hour in Woodward Hall about why the biology community should take the theory of “intelligent design” seriously.

Cloned humans won't be identical to original

Craig A. Butler's Feb. 14 column, "DNA Code is a Pandora's Box," is on target when it comes to genetic discrimination. When it comes to cloning, except for the technicalities of how it's done, he has no clue.

Cockfighting is part of barbaric N.M. heritage

A recent letter in the Daily Lobo on the subject of cockfighting encouraged New Mexico to join the rest of the civilized world. However, I believe New Mexico has made a name for itself by its barbaric, uncivilized nature.
