Love. It’s something that we all want, but sometimes cannot find. I have spent the past year filling the Daily Lobo with stories about my search for love, my failure to find it and subsequent nights spent with boxed wine and friends.
First, I want to say how proud and encouraged I am by the students who have formed #OurUNM. They are trailblazers who have chosen to look corporate greed in the eye and ask for an accounting. Right now, they are the only reason I am proud to be a Lobo.
In response to today’s headline, “Protesters hijack City Council meeting:” When will the media stop portraying protesters exercising their civil rights as terrorists? And in response to other media accounts that have described the meeting as “descending into chaos:” What is “chaos” and what is “order?”
There is apparently an interesting paradox at the University of New Mexico. On the one hand, a group of students without understanding of the Middle East and the majority of whom have never been there have decided to divest from the State of Israel. The groups are deciding the ‘correct’ borders for the democratic, successful economy of the Jewish State of Israel.
There’s that platitude that tells us to dance like no one’s watching. I write as if no one’s reading. This is not to say that I write without consequence or responsibility. On the contrary, integrity as a writer is the single most important thing to me.
Editor, If I were to wonder why this publication gives voice to people who are as far out of touch with reality as your most recent letter regarding GPSA’s divestment decision, would I be taking political discourse on this campus too seriously?
It is that time of year: finals looming, papers bearing down, projects hanging overhead. You are probably neglecting your health, forgoing sleep, exercise and healthy eating as you gear up for the end. Am I right?
Editor, I am writing this in response to Elisheva H. Levin’s letter titled “GPSA has no right to dictate foreign policy.” There are several premises in her letter that are simply wrong, starting with the idea that students (as represented by GPSA) are somehow dictating foreign policy.
Editor, The Graduate and Professional Student Association has acted unprofessionally and maliciously, and has sullied the University of New Mexico.
Editor, This week our campus was visited by preachers bearing the message that all Christians must live perfect lives. Their names were Steve and Sebastian. Their voices filled the patio air on the east side of the SUB with accusations, condemnation, and promises of eternal hellfire.
Editor, Yesterday, I was disappointed and disturbed to see a prominently-displayed sign in Zimmerman Library, cite Kenneth Adams’ “Three Peoples Murals” as inspiration for the choice of colors in the planned Library Learning Commons area.
Editor, I have protested on Albuquerque streets hundreds of times on many occasions since the 1970s. All of us are capable of stupid, ugly violence, but I aim to live non-violently toward all people—including police!
Editor, As a graduate student in the College of Education, I was upset to see that a political resolution was passed at the UNM GPSA Council Meeting on Saturday, April 26.
As this semester comes to a close and my friends and I prepare for new adventures after graduation, I have been reflecting on our search for love this past year at UNM. If there is one phrase that applies to all of us it would be: “you belong with me.”

Sexual assault is a growing problem on college campuses, and UNM is not immune to this trend. The sad fact, according to a study published by the National Coalition Against Violent Athletes, is that one in three sexual assaults on a university campus is committed by a student-athlete.
Editor, It is great to read that Emily Larsen supports the decrease of student fees and tuition and that her interest in civic engagement at UNM was amplified through the OurUNM event last Wednesday.

It was the summer of Joseph Paz’s sixteenth year. As a high school junior in Las Cruces, his days were filled with basketball and track. He and his friends dreamed of becoming world-class athletes.
