4-16 Sanchez letter

Editor, I am opposed to homosexual marriage. The standard response to this position from some people is to respond with a variety of pejorative labels, such as hater, homophobe, bigot, caveman, Bible thumper and so forth. The people who respond like this seem totally unaware that name calling does ...

4-15 Goodman

On April 2, 2014 I attended the undergraduate student senate meeting. In all the years that I spent on university campuses, I never attended a student government meeting. This UNM student senate meeting had before it a resolution from the Students for Justice in Palestine to isolate the State of Israel ...

Dr. Pegs Prescription

This semester I keep getting sick and can’t seem to stay well. I drink lots of water and try to eat a balanced diet, but keep getting sick. What can I do to bolster my immune system?

UNM must reassess goals for the welfare of students

Editor, On March 28, the UNM Board of Regents approved an increase of the tuition differential for graduate students in the School of Architecture and Planning by 50 percent, effective summer 2014. For those who do not know,

4-15 Keltz letter

Editor, On April 1, the UNM student senators voted down a resolution to divest from companies profiting from the occupation of the West Bank and Gaza. Ten voices from each side spoke for three minutes. Unfortunately, many of us did not get to speak. I was one of them. Here are my unspoken words. Dear ...

‘Raises’ don’t improve take-home pay overall

Editor, An open letter to the Provost, the President, the Board of Regents and the Legislature. With regard to Thursday’s emergency meeting about changes to the health care plan for UNM faculty and staff, I would like to make a few suggestions and offer a few opinions.

‘Students’ Dean’ shouldn’t toss students under bus

Editor, First of all, I would like to state that I am attempting to be as thoroughly civil as possible. However, if I do manage to slip and express an actual opinion, please forgive me. Recently our Dean of Students, Tomás Aguirre, released a column that advocates ostensibly for “advocacy and inclusion.”

UNM is paying for employee benefits with retiree benefi ts

Editor, I retired from UNM a year ago. I am one of the 600 people under age 65 who have health care from the University. People seem to forget that the University opted out of the State of New Mexico Retiree Health Care Authority. The University could save the couple of percent cost and do it by itself cheaper than figured.

UNM seems unable to put money where it matters

Editor, UNM Regents and Administration are having a difficult time finding $6 million to give UNM staff a 2 percent raise and faculty a 3 percent raise without raising student tuition rates again. According to New Mexico Watchdog, over the past 15 years UNM tuition rates for New Mexico residents have increased by a whopping 170 percent.

The Peer review

Recent advances in U.S. natural gas production have led many to believe that the fuel source is heaven sent: cheap, clean and economically stimulating energy that can stop global warming and free us from dependence on foreign oil.

‘Students’ Dean’ offers advocacy and inclusion

Dear students, This has been an especially emotional week for many of you, especially those who were in support of or against ASUNM Resolution 10S. As the Dean of Students — or, as I prefer to identify, the “Students’ Dean” — I always aim to provide advocacy, help you through critical moments and support the overall academic mission of this institution.

Ease climate change by starving fuel companies

Editor, Often people feel disillusioned by climate change because they believe the issue is too big, and the culprits too abstract, for their individual actions to matter. However, this should no longer be the case. The fossil fuel industry is the obvious climate antagonist, and the means of combating this industry is increasingly clear and concrete.

Prebyterian plan members can still use UNMH services

Editor, I am writing in response to the guest column “Insurance providers threaten our health,” published on March 24 in the Daily Lobo, to provide a better understanding of the collaborative decisions that were made by the University of New Mexico Hospital and Presbyterian Health Plan.
