GPSA honors graduate students for their success

Editor, Often people feel disillusioned by climate change because they believe the issue is too big, and the culprits too abstract for their individual actions to matter. However, this should no longer be the case.

#RelationshipStatus: Three’s a crowd

If you are a Tinder user (or have a very rude boyfriend,) you have probably received this exact message at least once: “Wanna fuck.” “Isn’t it the best pick-up line you have ever heard?” Collette said one night after she received yet another one of these messages.

Letter: Effective protest requires disrupting someone’s day

Editor, While everyone seems to be obsessed with the inadvisable tactics of a few lone wolf protesters, I would like to draw attention to an overlooked aspect of the events on Sunday. According to multiple sources, the Twitter accounts of #OpAlbuquerque and #APDProtest were censored.

"Peaceful" protests tend to lack efficacy

Sunday’s protest in Albuquerque brought attention to the long-standing problem of police violence and stirred public debate on protest methods. Critics claim that this unruly behavior detracted from the protesters’ cause by disrupting the lives of fellow citizens and requiring costly public services to contain the outrage. Albuquerque Mayor Richard Berry said, “they’ve taken it far beyond a normal protest.” But what is a “normal” protest?

UNM’s advice on tear gas goes out the window

Editor, Residents of Redondo Village surely appreciated the advice printed in the Albuquerque Journal today, that “UNM… advised students to use their air conditioners if the gas caused any issues.” If our air conditioners worked, you bet we would have been using them instead of keeping all of the windows open in a futile attempt to keep our rooms livable.

Poor judgment obscures law enforcement’s virtue

Editor, I am grateful to the men and women who devote their lives to law enforcement in the City of Albuquerque and in Bernalillo County. They place themselves in danger to enforce the laws that make our city a civilized place to live.

DOJ investigation request looks like crowd control

Editor, In the aftermath of APD’s week from hell, city officials claim to have referred the foothills shooting to the Department of Justice. Considering Mayor Berry and his police administration seem to see nothing wrong with the 23 police shootings over the past 4 years

Martinez’s reform threatens unions

If you haven’t heard by now, Susana Martinez is trying to prevent public sector unions from collecting membership dues. The governor’s conversation may be about dues, but the deeper context is about something much greater: the existence of unions, the right to organize and workplace democracy.

The Peer review

Artful detective Sherlock Holmes once proclaimed, “It is a capital mistake to theorize before one has data. Insensibly one begins to twist facts to suit theories, instead of theories to suit facts.”

Harassment should not be a part of campus life

Editor, I no longer feel safe on campus. Not because of muggings or drugs; it’s because of street harassment. I’ve been harassed many times on campus. These ranged from a drunken “I LOVE YOU!” on my way to teach a class one morning, to being catcalled while walking hand in hand with my six-year-old stepson.

#RelationshipStatus: Hoarding: buried in love?

Spring has officially sprung at UNM. The grass is green, the sprinklers are overshooting onto the sidewalks and the trees that smell like semen are in full bloom. I decided to do some spring cleaning over break, which is when I discovered that I am a hoarder.

Advertisement may be sexual harassment

Editor, I find the photo in the TD’s North Show Club advertisement in the Daily Lobo’s Tuesday, March 25 issue to be very offensive, discriminatory and possibly unlawful harassment in the workplace.

Lobo Letter

Let’s talk ice cream! In my younger days, Baskin Robbins was the place to go for delicious, high-quality ice cream. True, it cost a bit more than the local drugstore, but the difference was all in the taste, texture and smile on my face. The few extra cents back then was well worth it.
