Lead-off batter Mike Brownstein, seen rounding the bases, will have to deal with 100 mph pitches from SDSU's Stephen Strasburg on Friday at Isotopes Park. The consensus is that Strasburg will be the first overall pick in the 2009 MLB Draft.

SDSU pitcher to challenge Lobos' lineup

Murderers Row, meet Stephen Strasburg. San Diego State's right-handed pitcher will face the Lobos' batting lineup today. Strasburg has been portrayed as something of an urban legend, a pitcher harkening back to a story Sports Illustrated concocted about a hard-throwing ace named Sidd Finch, whose fastball whizzed by at 168 mph.

Roland Bruno snags a pass during Saturday's scrimmage at the Indoor Practice Facility. UNM's wide receivers will carry more of the load in offensive coordinator Darrell Dickey's scheme than they did last year. Last year, the Lobos' receivers had three tou

Locksley gives receivers bigger role

If you were to compile a list of adjectives to describe last year's UNM football team, chances are you wouldn't use words like "balanced" or "high-scoring." More than likely, you'd describe them as a smash-mouth, lull-you-to-sleep-then-catch-you-snoozing team.

Column: Thomas' track record foretells failure

It's true. In certain cases, prayers are better left unanswered. Such is the case of Isiah Lord Thomas III. Thomas has been given a chance at redemption. Tuesday, news broke that he will be named head coach at Florida International University. He will replace Sergio Ruoco after five straight losing seasons.

Head coach Anne Kolankiewicz talks with Emma Hayman on Saturday at the Randy Briggs Indoor Tennis Bubble. The Lobos won their third straight match by defeating Colorado State 5-2 on Saturday.

Morale high heading into MWC tourney

The UNM women's tennis team won three straight matches this weekend to close out its regular season. After two 7-0 victories against Wyoming and Air Force on Thursday and Friday, the Lobos rallied to a 5-2 win over Colorado State on Saturday at the UNM Tennis Complex.

UNM's Jermaine McQueen, center, sprints toward the finish line in the 100-meter dash. McQueen, who ran in two events on Saturday, placed second in both.

Lobo men win home invite; women take 4th

After five hours and four weather delays, the New Mexico Tailwind Invitational was finally underway at the UNM Track Stadium on Saturday. But the men's team stormed back in its later races of the day to claim the Tailwind title. The Lobos beat second-place finisher Wyoming 164-154, with Northern Arizona and South Florida rounding out the top four.

Walk-on guns for starting-QB position

It's not quite accurate to call Tate Smith a dark horse in the UNM football team's quarterback competition. But he is more liberated. He can thank head coach Mike Locksley for that. Remember, when Locksley was introduced to replace Rocky Long, he said every position was up for grabs.

Running back Terence Brown darts toward the outside during the Lobos' scrimmage Saturday. Brown, who had 82 yards on the ground, was outrushed only by A.J. Butler, who ran for 96 yards.

Inexperience an obstacle for UNM's running game

Attitude and work ethic aren't the problem for the UNM football team's running game - it's the youth and inexperience. The Lobos will head into the 2009 campaign with an assembly of young running backs: freshman A.J. Butler, sophomore James Wright and converted defensive back Terence Brown.

Strategy keeps linemen in motion

To say the UNM football team's offensive line weighs a ton wouldn't be far off. The Lobos' line started off the year weighing a little more than 1,500 pounds altogether. But due to the nature of head coach Mike Locksley's system, they might shed a few pounds before the season is done.

Cornerback Nathan Enriquez, left, clashes with teammate Jesse Paulsen during individual workouts Saturday. The Lobos have only four seniors returning in the secondary.

Clark pushes Lobo defense from sidelines

While Lobo safety Ian Clark is still recovering from off-season shoulder surgery that has kept him from participating in spring practices, it hasn't stopped him from pumping up his teammates, especially on Wednesday at University Stadium. Clark was at the back of the north end zone at University Stadium doing his best to maintain the intensity of the defense, in particular the secondary he will lead in the fall.

Former UNM volleyball player Jeanne Fairchild, left, looks to spike the ball as Lobos Jade Michaelsen, center, and Anna Lehne defend UNM's side of the net. The Lobos went 6-0 in their spring tournament and defeated a Fairchild-led alumni team.

Lobos pick up where they left off

The UNM volleyball team isn't getting much rest in the off-season. After traveling to the University of Arizona on March 28, the Lobos hosted the UNM Spring Invite this weekend at Johnson Gym. UNM went 6-0 during the tournament, defeating teams from UTEP, West Texas A&M, New Mexico Military Institute, in-state rival New Mexico State and an all-star team of ex-college players.

P.J. Wilson shields the ball from Fort Lewis defenders on Saturday at Robertson Field. Wilson put the Lobos up 1-0 early, and UNM held off the Skyhawks 2-1.

UNM beats Fort Lewis despite weather

A windsock could have been handy for the UNM men's soccer team in the Lobos' first home game of their six-game spring schedule. UNM played twice on Saturday, getting in some reps against Colorado State-Pueblo later in the day. But in the first game against Fort Lewis on Saturday, it was hard to tell which team would benefit most from the blustery conditions at Robertson Field.

Players adjust to new defensive strategies (Video)

When the UNM football team's defense is pitted against the Lobo offense, it is tough for there to be two winners. But that was head coach Mike Locksley's goal in Saturday's scrimmage at the UNM Indoor Practice Facility. "I want them to create turnovers on defense," Locksley said.

Jessica Lujan-Dresslar eyes a pitch in Saturday's 10-3 loss to BYU. The Lobos were swept by the Cougars.

Softball swept by BYU in weekend series

A conference win over Utah on Thursday was what the UNM softball team needed to get the rudders going, right? Nope. Thursday's win did little for UNM as far as building momentum, and the Lobos were swept in a two-game series against BYU. UNM lost 13-4 on Friday and 10-3 on Saturday.

Danridge dunks to victory (Video)

World, meet Tony Danridge. Danridge was on top of college basketball - even if it was just for one night. On Thursday at the Palace of Auburn Hills in Detroit, Danridge claimed the College Slam Dunk Championship belt with a double-windmill on ESPN, giving him a one-point victory over Charlotte's Charlie Coley III.

Pitcher Willy Kesler made his first start against Texas Tech on Wednesday, about 10 months after Kesler had Tommy John surgery. The Lobos won 15-7.

Speedy recovery helps pitcher to a good start

Willy Kesler doesn't have a shaman or a hyperbaric chamber. But he has modern medicine. And modern medicine has given the resilient right-hander an 0-2 count. Kesler, who made his first start in a 15-7 win over Texas Tech on Wednesday, has quickly healed from what doctors call ulnar collateral ligament reconstruction.

Edwin Carl hurls the ball during the Lobos' 8-4 loss to Texas Tech on Tuesday. The defeat is UNM's fifth, coming a week after the Lobos set a program record for the best start to a season.

Weak performance costs Lobos against Texas Tech

Fire up the grills was Ray Birmingham's message before Tuesday's game against Texas Tech. "We're going to barbecue their horse," the Lobo baseball head coach said. But it seems the Lobos forgot to throw on the propane tanks. UNM was handed its fifth loss of the season, 8-4.

Backup quarterback Victor James drops back during a spring practice on Monday. Lobo head coach Mike Locksley has his work cut out for him in teaching the UNM squad new schemes on offense and defense.

Locksley introduces team to new offense strategies

NCAA rules allow for 15 football practices in spring, and head coach Mike Locksley and Co. need all the time they can get. For the first time in 11 years, the UNM football team started spring training with a new coach. After a disappointing 4-8 season in 2008, former head coach Rocky Long stepped down.

Column: MWC denied the respect it deserves

Missing free throws underscores a more perturbing issue that isn't conveyed in the 15-foot distance between the stripe and the basket. Because the trajectory of 10 free throws was off, the UNM men's basketball team lost out on an opportunity to beat Notre Dame and move on in the National Invitational Tournament.

BYU's Stetson Banks flips his helmet in disgust on Saturday at Isotopes Park. The Cougars were victimized by a five-run seventh inning from the Lobos and lost 9-5.

Red rally

A win on Saturday didn't appear to be in the picture for the UNM baseball team. But the Lobos put on their rally caps in a five-run seventh inning to boost UNM over BYU 9-5. The Lobos notched a 2-1 series win over the Cougs. Mike Brownstein had to hit a pitch if the UNM baseball team was going to salvage a win on Saturday at Isotopes Park.
