UNM prepares for rested TCU team

If the UNM football team wants to come out of Saturday's TCU game with a win, slowing down the Horned Frogs from the get-go will be key. The last two times the teams met, TCU jumped out to leads of 28-0 and 24-0 and won both games despite rallies by the Lobos.

Volleyball falls short of comeback

by Brandon Call Daily Lobo The UNM volleyball team almost completed a come-from-behind win Friday. Unfortunately, the Lobos came short, falling to TCU 23-30, 24-30, 30-24, 30-22, 12-15 in Fort Worth, Texas. UNM is now 15-8 and 6-5 in the Mountain West Conference.

In the story of the Mountain West Conference cross country meet, Jeremy Johnson got the ending he had always wanted. Johnson won the MWC Championship in the last home meet of his career.

Home turf gives UNM upper hand

The UNM cross country team capitalized on the familiar terrain at North Golf Course on Saturday. The men's team had five runners in the top 20 - its best finish since it won the Western Athletic Conference title in 1988.

Fires force MWC finals to UNM

Because of the wildfires raging in California, the Mountain West Conference Cross Country Championships will be in Albuquerque this weekend. UNM head coach Joe Franklin said the tragedy in San Diego is unfortunate, but the team is happy to host the championships.


With a rushing total of 146 yards for the night, Rodney Ferguson scores a three-yard touchdown to give the Lobos a 28-24 lead in the third quarter after an Air Force turnover.

Special teams sparks big win

With UNM trailing 21-13 and less than three minutes remaining in the first half, the Lobos needed a spark to head into the locker room with momentum. The special teams provided the boost, when Nicky Lawson forced a fumble on a kickoff, which was recovered by Tyson Ditmore at the Air Force 12-yard line.

UNM defeats Air Force 34-31

In a game with five lead changes, the UNM football team held the advantage when it mattered most Thursday at University Stadium. Rodney Ferguson ran for two touchdowns on 146 total yards, and John Sullivan kicked four field goals in the Lobos' 34-31 win against Air Force.

Lobos prepare for big conference matchup

With five games left on the schedule, Thursday's contest against Air Force may be the most important one of the season for the UNM football team. If the Lobos knock off the Falcons, they will be in sole possession of second place in the Mountain West Conference and keep their hopes alive of winning the conference championship.

Lobos take loss, tie over the weekend

The UNM women's soccer team had a disappointing weekend, dropping a home game Friday and ending in a draw on the road Sunday. The Lobos went into overtime with UNLV on Friday at the UNM Soccer Complex, falling 2-1 in the extra period. UNM's Alexis Ball scored the only Lobo goal, putting UNM on the scoreboard in the 64th minute.

U.S., Mexico tie 1-1 in last game of series

A bruised and battered U.S. Women's National Team narrowly avoided an upset by Mexico on Saturday. With the U.S. team fresh off its third-place finish at the 2007 Women's World Cup in China, the injured Women's National Team concluded its three-game series with Mexico at University Stadium on Saturday.

Soccer bests UNLV

It took the Lobos a while to get warmed up, but once forward Chris Wright put the first goal on the board, the UNM men's soccer team dominated play in its 2-1 win over UNLV. The Rebels packed players in the defense and relied on counter-attacks for offensive play in Saturday's game at University Stadium.

Tennis triumphs at home tourney

If the UNM women's tennis team was worried about its upcoming season, it can put its uncertainties to rest after this weekend. Three Lobo singles players and a doubles team reached the finals of the UNM Fall Individual Invitational this weekend at the UNM Tennis Complex.

Soccer may see record crowd

Staff Report When the UNM men's soccer team takes on UNLV this weekend, it may have the largest crowd in program history supporting it. The Lobos will play in University Stadium on Saturday, just a couple of hours after the USA Women's National Team plays against Mexico at the stadium.

The UNM women's tennis team is gearing up for a busy weekend. Senior Lucy Scott, junior Ola Abou-Zekry and sophomore Sandra Zmak will compete in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Fall Regional Tournament in Tulsa, Okla.

Josh Beckett, blocking out everything but Jason Varitek's target, dominated the Cleveland Indians for the second time, and Manny Ramirez drove in the go-ahead run with a 390-foot single as the Red Sox stayed alive in the AL championship series with a 7-1 win Thursday night in Game 5.

Pro sports come to the 505

Albuquerquens will get a taste of professional sports this weekend. The Pit hosted an NBA preseason matchup between the Sacramento Kings and the Utah Jazz on Thursday. About 7,500 fans watched the Kings top the Jazz 105-91.

TCU hands soccer first conference loss

The UNM women's soccer team lost for the first time in a month Sunday, falling 1-0 to TCU. The Lobos outplayed the Horned Frogs at the UNM Soccer Complex for most of the game, but they couldn't execute their scoring opportunities.
