Lobos can't hang with Isotopes

For two innings, the UNM baseball team hung with the Albuquerque Isotopes. Unfortunately for the Lobos, they couldn't hold on to a 2-1 lead and fell 7-2 on Tuesday at Isotopes Park in an exhibition game. UNM head coach Rich Alday said there were some positives to take from the loss to the Triple-A Isotopes.

Spotlight's nothing new for men's coach

Steve Alford has had more than his share of attention since being hired as the head coach of the men's basketball team. Due in part to his $975,000 annual salary, Alford's hiring has been one of the most analyzed topics in Albuquerque. Fans have criticized and praised UNM for its decision to hire the former Iowa coach.

McKay heads east to take new head coach position

Ritchie McKay didn't take too long to find a new home. The former UNM men's basketball head coach - who was fired Feb. 22 - will be coaching Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va., according to several news sources.

Baseball falls to Utah

The UNM baseball team will have extra motivation to pick up its next win. The Lobos kicked off Mountain West Conference play at home this weekend, dropping 2-of-3 games to Utah at Isotopes Park on Sunday.

Lobo players looking for a fresh start after a disappointing season last year have something that might redirect their attention. The hiring of Steve Alford as head coach of the UNM men's basketball team means the Lobos can try to wipe the slate clean from last season's 15-17 record.

Wildcats won't tame Lobos

Just because Arizona is the defending national champion doesn't mean the Lobos are intimidated by the Wildcats. The UNM softball team will take on No. 5 Arizona this weekend in Tucson, Ariz., in a three-game series.

UNM sets sights on regionals

After qualifying two athletes for regionals in their opening meet, the Lobos will try to improve on that success this weekend. The UNM track and field outdoor season continues today in Los Angeles at USC's Trojan Invitational.

Lobos make comeback to crush intrastate rival

It took a bizarre sixth-inning comeback, but the UNM men's baseball team clinched the season series with NMSU on Tuesday. The Lobos trailed 4-3 heading into the bottom of the sixth but scored seven runs in the inning - including four on three bunts - en route to a 13-6 win over the Aggies at Isotopes Park.

This year's men's NCAA Tournament can be defined by one word - predictable. As I do every year when facing the dilemma of filling out an NCAA bracket for an office pool, I tend to go for the higher seeds. This year, my strategy is finally paying off.
