Swimming, diving take seventh in meet

The UNM swimming and diving team couldn't improve on last year's finish, placing seventh this weekend at the Mountain West Conference Championships in Oklahoma City. Ashley Grisdale was the lone Lobo to earn a medal in the meet, finishing second in the 200-yard butterfly in 2:04.49. Diver Carrie Quinn placed fifth on the platform board with a score of 198.6.

Kathy Kolankiewicz has seen a lot in her coaching career. But nothing as dramatic as Friday when senior Iva Gersic - the UNM women's tennis team's No. 1 singles player - tore ligaments in her ankle, ending her college career.

If the Lobos needed any motivation for the rest of the season, they may have got it. The announcement of head coach Ritchie McKay's firing came as a surprise to the UNM men's basketball team, and whether it will have a negative effect will be seen on the court.

Championships to be last meet for coaches

Matt and Mark Henry simply didn't have the patience to stick around for long-awaited promises to be met. The head coaches of the UNM track and field team announced their retirement at a press conference Monday, saying the rise of the program under new Athletics Director Paul Krebs would be a long and strenuous process.


Lobo head coach Ritchie McKay announced Saturday that guard J.R. Giddens has been suspended indefinitely.

Lobos serve up two more wins

The Lobos didn't find it hard to defend their home court this weekend. The No. 35 UNM women's tennis team made its home season debut with a pair of 6-1 victories over Northern Arizona and Marquette on Friday and Sunday at the UNM Tennis Complex.

There's nothing like an opponent with a 10-game losing streak coming to town to boost team morale. The UNM men's basketball team handled Texas Christian 74-58 on Saturday at The Pit to stop a two-game losing streak of its own.

Even if it was a letdown game, the Lobos still got the result they wanted. The UNM women's basketball team struggled early but earned a 57-47 win at Air Force on Saturday.

If Kelly Ninemire's first time pitching against a top-five opponent is any indication of things to come, the UNM softball team should be in good shape for the rest of the season when she takes the mound.

The UNM ski team is not where it needs to be yet, but a solid performance at its home meet could help boost the team the rest of the season. The Lobos earned a third-place finish at this weekend's New Mexico Invitational, sweeping the slalom events in the process.

Softball team tramples third-ranked UCLA, 13-1

Staff Report The UNM softball team clobbered the No. 3 team in the nation, the University of California-Los Angeles. UNM beat UCLA 13-1 in five innings in Saturday's second game at the Kajikawa Classic held in Tempe, Ariz. After the victory, the Lobos were shutout 5-0 by Florida on Sunday.
