Men's basketball starts season with a big bang

So far this season, no opponent that has entered The Pit has been a problem for the UNM men's basketball team. The Lobos beat Sacramento State 92-56 on Sunday for their third straight blowout at home. On Friday, UNM handled Abilene Christian 91-54 in the regular season opener.

Runner finishes with NCAA ticket

Timmie Murphy was not going to end her cross country career at UNM without making a trip to the NCAA Championships. At Saturday's NCAA Mountain Regional, which was at the UNM North Golf Course, Murphy punched her ticket to the national championships by placing fifth overall, the best by a Lobo since 1988.

One mistake costs Lobos against TCU

This time, the UNM football team dug itself a hole too deep to climb out of. After falling behind 24-0 at halftime, the Lobos rallied to pull within 24-21 but didn't complete the comeback, losing 27-21 to Texas Christian on Saturday.

UNM to face Cal in second round

It took a last-minute goal, but the UNM men's soccer team is moving on in the NCAA Tournament. Lobo freshman Stephen Brown scored the lone goal of UNM's 1-0 win at San Francisco with 18 seconds left in the game Friday, leading the Lobos to a second round contest at California.

Lobos on the road despite No. 8 rank

The UNM men's soccer team finished the season 13-3-3, is ranked No. 8 in the nation and won the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation title Sunday. Still, that wasn't good enough for the seeding committee to give the Lobos a top-16 seed so they could have a home game for this year's NCAA Tournament.

Off the bench and in the zone

In his first two years as a UNM men's soccer player, Mike Porter spent a lot more time watching than playing. But in his sophomore season, Porter helped anchor a Lobo defense that is one of the most elite in the nation and helped UNM advance to the NCAA Tournament.

Tim Duncan's selfless play just the Thing to help Spurs clobber all foes

I love superheroes. I still like dressing up as some variation of them for Halloween, whether it is Drunk Batman who remembers his tool belt but forgets his mask, cape and Batsuit; Safe-sex Superman who hands out green condoms he claims to be laced with Kryptonite, the best STI defender of all time; or Captain Afghanistan, the Captain America of the Middle East.

UNM strokes its way to 2nd place

UNM swimming head coach Tracy Ljone isn't that disappointed when her team doesn't come in first place. But that's only if it comes in second, like it did for the second week in a row at its home meet Thursday.

Stingy defense helps Lobos drop NAIA foe

If Wednesday's exhibition game was any indication, the UNM women's basketball team deserves its top-25 ranking. The No. 20 Lobos convincingly beat NAIA institution Vanguard University, 82-43, on Wednesday in The Pit.

Cardinals prove to be top-notch

I was lucky enough to grow up near St. Louis, the child of avid Cardinals baseball fans. Since Tony LaRussa came on as coach 10 years ago, though frustrating at times, the Cardinals have been one of the most exciting teams in baseball to watch.
