UNM to Pack the Park for Air Force

by Daniel Schrader Daily Lobo UNM baseball has been beating up on Air Force. The Lobos have won 13 straight contests against the Falcons, whom they host this weekend for a three-game series. Air Force (5-23, 0-9 MWC) is having a bad season. The team is coming off a three-game series against Utah, which left the Falcons still searching for their first Mountain West Conference win.

Blood was rushing into his eye. John Dodson thought the fight was over. Then his opponent grabbed his ankle, and the referee said he wasn't done yet. "I had a cut on my eye because I got headbutted," he said. "It was the worst day of my life. I wanted to debut as a standup fighter, and I came out swinging and got headbutted and just thought, 'Damn.

Lobos face coach's former team

Jeremy Fishbein said he doesn't have any plans to punish his team if it loses to Fort Lewis College on Saturday. The head coach of the UNM men's soccer team coached Fort Lewis from 1992 to 1998. It was his first college coaching job, but he said he's not worried about Saturday's game carrying any hints of a rivalry.

Cricket Club eyes recruits

by Steven Fernandez Daily Lobo Want to try your hand at wicket keeping? Think you might make a good bowler? The UNM Cricket Club is looking for members. Two years ago, the team won the Tex-N-Mex tournament, and last year it won the One World Memorial Tournament in Colorado.

Derek Mackel track and field The senior pole vaulter cleared a personal record 17 feet, 8 1/2 inches to place third at the Texas Relays in Austin. The height was the second best in the Mountain West Conference this year and fifth best in MWC history. Whitney Johnson track and field The freshman pole vaulter soared her way to an NCAA regional qualifying mark of 12 feet, 11 1/2 inches at the Texas Relays in Austin.

UNM women's golfer Kailin Downs can't, but that's because he caddied for her instead. Downs got her chance to hang out with Murray for two rounds when he toted her bags around the Sleepy Hollow Golf Course in Scarborough, N.

Arndt, Moore to skip draft

The WNBA draft is coming up on Saturday, but you won't find any UNM women's basketball players in it. Graduating seniors Lindsey Arndt and Mandi Moore are eligible for the draft, but neither of them will participate in it, UNM women's basketball head coach Don Flanagan said.

UNM racquetball takes 5th at nationals

UNM earned a spot as a national competitor in yet another sport this season when Lobo club racquetball placed fifth in the nation. The team traveled to Tempe, Ariz., to compete individually and as a team in the USA Racquetball National Intercollegiate Championship for the second consecutive year.

North Carolina nabs NCAA title

by Eddie Pells The Associate Press ST. LOUIS - Of course, there was no way it was going to be easy. North Carolina did it, though, and now it's time to stop asking Roy Williams that doggone question. Sean May had 26 points and the Tar Heels didn't allow a basket over the final excruciating 2 1/2 minutes Monday night to defeat Illinois 75-70, a win that finally gave Williams, a 17-year coaching veteran, the national championship that was missing from his otherwise stellar rÇsumÇ.

Long to retool Lobo lineup

Spring cleaning has begun for the Lobo football team. There are positions to fill, an offense to perfect and a little dust to shake off. Head coach Rocky Long spoke about the holes he needs to plug. "The key is kicker, linebacker and safety," he said. "We don't have a lot of depth on offense, but we do have a lot of experience.

Max Jones men's tennis Jones continued his brilliant freshman campaign with an easy singles win over Santa Clara's No. 1 seeded player, Taylor Bedilion. Jones is 3-0 this season when playing in the No. 1 singles spot. Caley Peterson softball When Katie Gregg couldn't retire a single batter in the second game of the Lobos' Sunday double-header, Peterson came out of the bullpen and dominated UNLV.

Seniors dominate final match

The meet was already in hand Sunday, with UNM leading the Santa Clara Broncos 4-1, but seniors David Kowalski and Ryan Stotland still had the Lobos' last two matches to wrap up. It was a fitting end to their Lobo careers. Kowalski and Stotland had all the attention.

Lobos pull out late-game victory

by Justin Goodrum Daily Lobo A walk-off home run in the first game gave UNM all the momentum it needed to sweep a doubleheader Sunday against San Diego State. This Mountain West Conference rivalry has been unfriendly to the Lobos, as the Aztecs lead the all-time series 39-21 and outscored UNM 30-12 in their last five wins.

Seeing doubles; duo ranked fourth

College sports can be about friendship as much as competition. Take senior men's tennis players Ryan Stotland and David Kowalski. Stotland and Kowalski are teammates and roommates. Together they are having two of the most successful tennis careers UNM has ever seen.

Lobos aim to better golf game

It was a bittersweet week for the UNM men's golf team. The Lobos placed sixth at the National Invitational Tournament at the Omni Tucson National Golf Course. UNM finished the three-round tournament 16-under par, 10 strokes from first place. The Lobos finished the first round tied for third place but fell to seventh place after a shaky second round.

Sports in brief

Softball The Lobos took down New Mexico State in both games of a doubleheader Friday at Lobo Field. The superb pitching of Katie Gregg and Ashley Perkins helped UNM get two 2-0 shutouts. Gregg held NMSU to just three hits in the first game, while Perkins allowed only two.
