Rebels rally through weather

by Kelly Brocklehurst Daily Lobo The Lobos' hot bats turned cold during the eighth inning against UNLV on Saturday. UNM lost the game 14-9 after the Rebels began their rally in the seventh inning, scoring three runs and cutting the score to 7-6. The game was delayed briefly in the seventh inning because of snow and again for nearly an hour in the eighth inning as the weather grew worse.

Cards stage comeback win

Their best player was riding the bench with five fouls. Their opponents were so hot from three-point range, they were banking baseline treys and pulling up from seven feet behind the arc. And their top remaining swingman was cramping so badly, he constantly doubled over in pain as the game wore on.

Lobos Wall and Osby to transfer out of UNM

Lobo head coach Ritchie McKay announced Thursday that sophomore guard Ryan Wall and freshman forward Bambale Osby will transfer out of UNM. Neither player has indicated where he will go after completing the spring semester. Wall averaged 1.2 points for the Lobos in 25 games this year but saw a significant increase in playing time after starting point guard Kris Collins broke his foot in late January.

WVU bumps off Texas Tech

by Riley Bauling Daily Lobo Texas Tech's Ronald Ross waged his campaign for homecoming king, but West Virginia's Kevin Pittsnogle crashed the coronation. Ross, a native of New Mexico, put up 16 points - 10 of them in the second half - but it wasn't enough as the Red Raiders lost to the Mountaineers, 65-60.

Coach reflects on tourney loss

by Phil Parker Daily Lobo A first-round NCAA tournament loss may be the pits, but head coach Don Flanagan said it's nothing to dwell on. "I have to respect the season we had," Flanagan said. "Everybody in the NCAAs loses their last game except for the team that wins the championship.

Track star's best is yet to come

by Steven Fernandez Daily Lobo Matt Gonzales was just 2.36 seconds from being crowned a national champion. The UNM senior finished fourth at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships on March 11 in Arkansas, improving on his own school record in the 5,000-meter race and finishing just a couple seconds out of first place.

Lobos douse Flames in 6 innings

by Justin Goodrum Daily Lobo The Lobos were set to play two games Sunday against Liberty and Texas Tech but had to settle for the former when weather conditions and travel plans canceled the second half of their doubleheader. The Liberty Flames already lost their first game of the day to Texas Tech, 15-7, heading into the matchup against the Lobos.

Athletes of the Week

Jeff Grady Baseball The Lobos' catcher went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer against Brigham Young for his team-leading fifth home run. The Lobos lost in 11 innings to the Cougars, 4-3. Mandi Moore Women's basketball In her final game as a Lobo, the point guard had 18 points and helped keep the Lobos close in their 68-56 loss to Purdue in the first round of the NCAA tournament.

Over Spring Break

UNM didn't repeat as a national champion, but the ski team still finished fourth at the 2005 NCAA Championships in Stowe, Vermont. The Lobo women were the story of the meet. They won their third straight title in the Nordic Freestyle, with senior Martina Stursova and junior Trine Lundamo named All-Americans thanks to their strong performances in the event.

by Kelly Brocklehurst Daily Lobo Darren Coltrinari's strong nine innings pitched weren't enough for UNM. The Lobos fell 4-3 to Brigham Young on Saturday as the game went into extra innings. "Nine innings is pretty stressful out there on the mound," Coltrinari said.

Staff Report Second verse, same as the first. The UNM women's basketball team and the Utah Utes tied for the regular season Mountain West Conference champion for the second consecutive year after the Lobos' 65-48 win over the Wyoming Cowgirls on Saturday.

Green rugby teams falter in first games

by Justin Goodrum Daily Lobo Inexperience was the biggest factor in the Lobos' blowout losses to the No. 2 Air Force men and the No. 1 Air Force women. The women played first and went down 52-8. Some of their starters were new to the team. "Today's game was our first game of the season that all of us have played together," Sheree Risley-Aragon said.

Matt Gonzales Men's Track & Field The senior ran an NCAA automatic qualifying time of 13:49.06 in the 5,000 meter to win the event at the Notre Dame Alex Wilson Invitational. Gonzales became the first man from UNM to qualify for the NCAA tournament in 14 years.

Sports in brief

Baseball The Lobos beat Northern Colorado in both games of a doubleheader on Saturday at Isotopes Park. UNM also won the first meeting of the two teams on Friday with a score of 11-8. Jeff Grady went 4-for-7 in both games on Saturday with three home runs and six RBIs to help the Lobos win 9-5 and then 11-6.

Seniors honored by coach, fans

Head coach Ritchie McKay pulled forward Danny Granger off the court with 45 seconds left in the game against Colorado State on Saturday. The senior sat on the bench, put his head in his hands and cried, wiping his eyes with the bottom of his jersey. "I told myself I wasn't going to cry," he said.
