Athletes of the Week

Kristen Winters Soccer In a tough 1-0 loss to BYU, Winters kept the Lobos in the game, tying a season-high with seven saves. She kept the ball out of the net until the 92:22 mark in the game, when BYU scored on a penalty kick. Nick Speegle Football Speegle led the Lobo defense with a solid performance against SDSU.

Lobos lose fourth game in a row

One goal was the difference between being on top and dwelling in the cellar. The UNM women's soccer team lost its fourth-straight game Saturday to the BYU Cougars, 1-0. The Lobos' four losses have all been by one goal. It was also the second time in those four games they took a team into overtime.

Basketball picked for 2nd, 4th

Staff Report The preseason picks are out for the Lobo men's and women's basketball teams, and each squad should find ample motivation in the selections. The men were selected to finish fourth in the Mountain West Conference behind UNLV, Utah and Air Force, despite having Danny Granger who was named Top Returning Player in the poll.

Volleyball team dominated by No. 9 Colorado State

Staff Report The Lobo volleyball team had its moments in a Friday night matchup against conference powerhouse Colorado State but couldn't stop a dominating attack from the Rams. UNM fell in three games to No. 9 CSU in front of a season-high 1,015 fans.

Men's golf takes first in tourney, sets UNM record UNM won the 16-team Nelson Invitational in Stanford, Calif., this weekend with a dominating performance that can only improve the No. 3 Lobos' standing in the national rankings. On the 6,444-yard, par-69 Stanford golf course, the Lobos shot a final-round 284 and finished the tournament at 830 - a school record for 54 holes.

Lobos could still make bowl game

by Kristie Boudwin Daily Lobo UNM returns home this weekend for its first game in Albuquerque since the Utah euthanizing. If mention of the Utah game leaves a bitter taste in your mouth, hear me out. Utah is undefeated and sits in first place in the Mountain West Conference.

Colorado puts dent in men's perfect record

Perfect. That's what the record of the UNM men's soccer team would have been with a win against the Denver Pioneers on Sunday. However, the Lobos' quest for an unbeaten regular season was stopped short when Denver's Christian Bowers scored the game-winning goal in the 18th minute, putting the Pioneers up 2-0.

Lobos get first conference win

Staff Report Big games from DonTrell Moore and cornerback Gabriel Fulbright helped spur the Lobos to their first Mountain West Conference win, 24-20 over UNLV. Moore looked completely recovered from a three-week-old knee injury, running for 141 yards and a touchdown.

Matt Gonzales Men's Cross Country Gonzales ran a classic this weekend, finishing first overall in the 8,000-meter race in the Pre-Nationals. The Lobos' leader ran a career best time of 23:47.2. Jacquelyne Gallegos Women's Cross Country Gallegos returned to her old form as the best runner on the women's cross country team.

Staff Report Matt Gonzales was at the top of his game for the Lobos at pre-nationals this weekend at the Lavern Gibson Championship Course in Indiana. Gonzales won the 8000-meter race with a career best time of 23:47.2, and the UNM men's cross country team finished in 10th place, ahead of six top-30 teams.

Basketball teams give fans something to howl about

Howls and booms could be heard from within the confines of the Pit on Saturday. The howls hyped up the UNM men's and women's basketball teams and the booms showed 6-foot-7 freshman men's basketball player Bambale "Boom" Osby just how much UNM fans appreciate seeing him in a Lobo uniform.

Everyone remembers last year's American League Championship Series. With five outs remaining, the Boston Red Sox led by three runs. An inning-and-a-half later, New York was rejoicing, and for the 85th time, Boston was lamenting. The Red Sox still remember it.

Lobos play best of the West at Stanford

Now that they're caught up on their schoolwork, it's time for the 11th-ranked UNM women's golf team to get back on the course. The Lobos head to Stanford this weekend to compete in the Stanford Pepsi Intercollegiate tournament after a three-and-a-half week break from tournament play.

Andrew Weber Men's Soccer The Lobos' goalkeeper recorded his fifth straight shutout Sunday against the Sacramento State Hornets. It was the senior's sixth shutout of the season. Lucy Scott Women's Tennis The freshman women's tennis player won the flight three singles for the Lobos in the Air Force Fall Invite.

9-game streak breaks team record

Success comes in threes for the UNM men's soccer team. With a 3-0 win against the Sacramento State Hornets on Sunday, the Lobos started the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation conference season with three straight 3-0 wins. The win also improves the Lobos' overall record to 9-0, the best start in the program's history.

Game 2 canceled after brawls

by Travis Weber Daily Lobo Pucks and fists flew at the Ice Wolves' first home game of the season. UNM hosted the Texas Tech Red Raiders this weekend in its home opener at Outpost Ice Arena. The two-game series was cut short after multiple suspensions stemming from several fights during Friday night's game.

Falcon defeat boosts Lobo morale

After five straight losses, the UNM women's soccer team looks like it's back on track. With a 2-1 win against the visiting Air Force Falcons, the Lobos are on a two-game winning streak after their 1-0 win at Northern Arizona last week. The Lobos' victory improves their record to 5-6-0 and 1-0-0 in Mountain West Conference play.
