College football season underway

Knight Ridder/Tribune FORT WORTH, Texas -The 2003 college football season begins this week, and this season's team of destiny will be determined in the Sugar Bowl on Jan. 4. The season began Saturday with two games - California at Kansas State in the Black Coaches Association Classic, and Division I-AA Grambling State at San Jose State in the Martin Luther King Literacy Classic.

Women's soccer picked third

by Derek Davis Daily Lobo The predictions are out, the expectations are set and the season is ready to begin for the UNM women's soccer team. The Lobos will begin their campaign against Texas Tech in Lubbock this Friday, followed by a Sunday afternoon date in Norman, Okla.

Former Lobo talent honored

Next month five of the University's finest athletes will be inducted into the UNM Athletic Hall of Honor. Many of the men and women have not been recognized as Lobos in 40 years. "It's a great honor to finally be recognized for what I did," said Mike Prokopiak, kicker on the memorable 1952 football team.

NCAA may investigate Bliss's UNM tenure

Staff Report Just because nearly four years have passed since Dave Bliss coached at UNM doesn't necessarily mean that the University is exempt from the NCAA's current investigation. The investigation, while still focusing on the unethical practices Bliss was involved in at Baylor, is widening to look into the possibility of similar occurrences at the other universities Bliss coached at.

Volleyball begins with promise

Saturday the Lobos held their first scrimmage of the season, in the annual Cherry/ Silver match at Johnson Center. In front of an audience of family, friends and peers, the Lobos proved they are ready to play hardball, even against each other.

Falcons' Vick suffers injury

Knight Ridder/Tribune ATLANTA - The Atlanta Falcons' worst fears came true Saturday night. Quarterback Michael Vick, the team's most dominant player and a likely MVP candidate, fractured the fibula in his right leg in the first quarter of the Falcons' preseason game with Baltimore.

Foul language rule 'strong'

by Derek Davis Daily Lobo The Zero Tolerance Foul Language Rule will not affect college soccer fields this season. The proposed rule called for the use of red cards to mediate bad language on the soccer pitch. In early August the Division I Championships/Competition Cabinet voted against the proposal.

Men's soccer expectations high

"We would like to do everything we did last year and then improve from there," head coach Jeremy Fishbein said. Everything includes repeating as Mountain Pacific Sports Federation regular and post-season champions as well as going to the second round of the NCAA tournament.

With each passing hot summer day, football fans across Albuquerque inch closer and closer to the highly anticipated UNM home opener on Aug. 30. But before everyone starts rolling their barbecues and coolers into the University Stadium parking lot, the Lobos must work out all the off-season kinks in preseason practice.

Lobos rebuild to serve up wins

The UNM volleyball team is looking forward to a fresh start this fall. The Lobos are undergoing a complete makeover this season under second-year head coach Kelley Sliva McKee with a roster featuring only four players from last season. UNM finished the 2002 season with a 10-21 record.

Dennehy autopsy released

Assocoated Press WACO, Texas (AP) - Gunshot wounds to the head are what killed Baylor University basketball player Patrick Dennehy, according to a preliminary autopsy report released Wednesday. Dennehy's official cause of death is homicide, the Southwestern Institute of Forensic Sciences in Dallas said in its report.

Adams adjusts to life in WNBA

UNM basketball icon Jordan Adams will complete her first season in the WNBA in the fall - however her career in professional basketball has just begun and is expanding at an enormous rate. Adams signed a contract in late April with the Minnesota Lynx. The Lynx season opener was on May 24 against the Sacramento Monarchs.

Letzig says fun's just starting

Michael Letzig was an electrifying, though sometimes erratic, player during his first three years at UNM - then he made an attitude adjustment. The 22-year-old, Richmond, Mo. native was as well known for his hot scoring - he holds the all-time 54-hole record at UNM (17-under-par 199 in 2001) - as he was for his hot temper.

Track athlete declared ineligible because of cab ride

ALBUQUERQUE (AP) - Jessica De La Rosa, a University of New Mexico track athlete and girlfriend of a missing Baylor basketball player, says the NCAA has declared her ineligible for next season. She said Tuesday she broke NCAA rules by accepting money "from a member of the Baylor coaching staff for a cab ride from Waco (Texas) to Dallas" after visiting Patrick Dennehy last season.

Another Lobo to star in Europe

Staff Report Former Lobo basketball player Chelsea Grear recently signed a contract committing her to the Perik Jumpers, a professional basketball team out of the Netherlands. Grear is expected to be a major asset to the Jumpers, which were co-champions last season in the Dutch women's professional basketball league.

Lobo wins with record 61

In a summer full of solid performances and good finishes by Jay Reynolds, the UNM junior golfer says the highlight has simply been playing without pain. "I'm just so glad to be able to get out there and compete without having to worry about my back," said Reynolds, who missed a large portion of the Lobos' 2002-03 season because of a recurring injury in the lower-lumbar region of his back.

Preseason poll ranks Lobo soccer in top 20

by Matt Hemmendinger Daily Lobo Last year the Lobo soccer team spent only one week in the National Soccer Coaches Association Top-25. This year it has already received national attention with the release of CollegeSoccerNews.com's preseason Top-30. "Initially it's really exciting, but then you start to question it and try to figure out whether it is a good or bad kind of pressure," head coach Jeremy Fishbein said.

Armstrong leads, but fails to dominate

NARBONNE, France (AP) - Halfway through the Tour de France, Lance Armstrong has yet to dominate cycling's showcase race as he has in the past. He didn't shine in the Alps and their monstrous climbs - although he rode well enough to take the overall lead.

Baseball Slugging Albuquerque Isotope right fielder Robert Stratton took home the Old Navy Home Run Derby title in Memphis on Tuesday. Stratton cranked out 10 homers in the final round including a 470 foot drive to outpace Louisville's Brandon Larson in the final round 10-5.
