Track and field: Lobos head to Stanford, Kerr named National Athlete of the Week

The Lobo track and field team will continue its road schedule to Stanford, California this Friday and Saturday to compete in the Cardinal Classic. “It’s going into a very small high-power meet at Stanford,” head coach Joe Franklin said in an interview. “There are probably 15 teams, all very good.” Although there may not be specific expectations, the Lobos will wish to repeat their solid performances from the previous weekend in California. Franklin said the Bryan Clay Invitational was a good meet for New Mexico across the board with many lifetime bests from the athletes.

Women’s Soccer: Lobos Honor Former UNM Head Coach as the Spring Season Nears the Finish Line

Although considered the offseason, UNM women’s soccer has enjoyed a busy spring period. The Lobos finished the 2016 fall season with a record of 9-7-3 (5-5-1 MW), and missed out on the Mountain West Conference tournament. They finished eighth in the Conference standings, two points behind Boise State. The Lobos closed out the season on a positive note with a dramatic win over San Diego State University. The Lobos also received academic recognition for the fall season. Of the 60 UNM All-Academic Mountain West honorees, 16 were from the women’s soccer program.

Column: The NCAA — A nonprofit that sees plenty of green

Most people have heard the phrase “do as I say...not as I do” at some point in their life. That message is on full display when the NCAA makes rules against players benefitting financially from their athletic ability. The NCAA, a nonprofit entity, has the primary task of ensuring fair competition between its member schools in collegiate sporting events. But being a “nonprofit” certainly doesn’t mean the NCAA doesn’t generate any revenue — far from it. It has a disclosed a reported revenue of nearly $1 billion in each of the last several years, according to ncaa.org. In nearly all circumstances, it is a violation of NCAA rules for student-athletes to receive compensation for their athletic talent outside of their athletic scholarship. But it appears to be okay for others to do so.

Baseball: Despite good performance, Lobos fall in double-header against Kansas State

The UNM baseball team had the opportunity to win a pair of games in doubleheader action at Kansas State, but failed to do so, losing game one 12-10, and game two 3-2, at Tointon Family Stadium in Manhattan, Kansas on Tuesday. The two losses for UNM weigh heavy on its overall record, dropping the team to 20-16-1 overall, and marking the team's third straight loss in the past four days. But despite dropping both games to Kansas State (19-18), the Lobos didn't perform terribly either. In game one, the Lobos combined for 10 hits and 10 runs, and in game two the team combined for eight hits and two runs.

Men’s Tennis: UNLV and San Diego State halt UNM’s Momentum

The Lobos’ Conference ambitions took a heavy blow over the weekend as UNM fell 4-2 to both UNLV and San Diego State University at home. The Lobos were tied for first in the Conference standings along with Utah State and Fresno State, but after the recent losses, the Lobos are now tied for fourth with San Diego State and Nevada. There are eight teams in the Conference, and at the end of Conference play, the standings determine the Mountain West Conference tournament seeding. The Lobos had lost to Fresno State, but had beaten Utah State, Nevada, and Boise State before the matches against UNLV and SDSU. At that point, it looked as if the Lobos would be fighting for the number one seed.

Ski Team protest crashes Board of Regents meeting

The UNM ski team and their supporters gathered in front of Hodgin Hall just after 7 a.m. Tuesday morning to protest the decision of Athletic Director Paul Krebs to cut all funding to the team. In addition to the ski team, the women’s rugby team, locals and UNM alumni sported lobo colors while holding signs reading, ‘Give us a chance,’ ‘Highest GPA’ and ‘3.9 GPA’. Alexandra Hammon, a woman’s rugby player who attended the rally, said she has heard of the ski team’s academic and athletic success. “I know they’re one of the only UNM athletics programs who progressively excels at their sport,” Hammon said. “They keep getting championships, they keep getting individual championships and to me, this just seems like a really low blow.”

Lobos shined at Bryan Clay Invite, Kerr ran to NCAA all-time sixth

The Bryan Clay Invitational once again turned out to be the meet of promise for Lobo track and field team. The Lobos notched one personal title, seven top-three finishes and six other top-10 finishes on Thursday and Friday in Azusa, California. It was the first time in the outdoor season that New Mexico competed its full team. “Everybody is in their primary events, and seeing how things go,” head coach Joe Franklin said of the goal for the meet in an interview. With conference championships and NCAA preliminaries in about one month, the Lobos needed to post sterling performances to secure their bids for the nationals.

Ski team laments "poorly handled" situation

It started with a text message at 8 a.m. and, by 2 in the afternoon, the program he had been a part of for over 30 years was no more. That was the reality for head ski coach Fredrik Landstedt on Thursday, when UNM athletics announced their decision to dismantle the UNM ski program altogether, a situation that Landstedt describes as “extremely poorly handled.” Athletics Director Paul Krebs informed the coaches in a meeting at 1 p.m. before informing the team’s student athletes at a second meeting 15 minutes later.

Baseball: UNM blanked in series finale against Missouri State Bears

The New Mexico baseball team took games one and two over Missouri State but could not complete the sweep, falling in the series finale at Santa Ana Star Field on Saturday. The Bears got out on top early and continued to play well-rounded baseball throughout the game en route to an 8-0 shutout victory – and its first over the Lobos this season. It was the first time the Lobos had been shutout on their home turf in 164 games. Missouri State’s starting pitcher, Doug Still, had his way with the Lobos, going the distance for a complete-game victory. He scattered five Lobo hits over his nine innings pitched, though he struck out just one batter. Still also benefitted from some phenomenal defensively play while on the hill.

Men's Soccer: Schedule change allows UNM to host Air Force

After a month-long break, the UNM men’s soccer team is ready to spring back into action. On the original schedule, the Lobos were going to hit the road to take on the Air Force Academy on Saturday. However, the scheduled was recently changed and the Falcons will travel to Albuquerque, New Mexico instead. The match will be one of just two home matches the Lobos have scheduled for the spring. Both of them will be played at the UNM Robertson practice facility instead of the UNM soccer complex, where all fall season matches are played.

Lobos to host UNLV and San Diego State in final home matches

UNM will be playing its final two home matches of the season against UNLV and San Diego State before finishing the regular season with four more conference matches before the conference tournament begins. With Conference wins against Nevada, Boise State, and Utah State, the Lobos (10-10, 3-1 MW) are now tied for first in the Conference with Fresno State and Utah State. All three sides have three wins and a loss. Nevada and UNLV are tied for fifth; having each won two matches and lost two matches. Lobos bounce back to win series opener against Missouri St

A potent late inning offense in Thursday's series opener at Santa Ana Star Field was all the University of New Mexico baseball team needed to secure a win. A strong sixth inning, which saw the Lobos (19-13-1, 11-2-1 MW) score six runs -- both scored in three runs a piece off of key hits -- tallied the final score in favor of the home team, 15-7. The game didn't play out into the Lobos' favor early on and, instead, saw a tight-knit game throughout five innings, before UNM grabbed the lead and never looked back in the bottom of the fifth.

The season-high three-match winning streak definitely gave New Mexico confidence for this week’s four matches. “We should be playing at our best,” assistant coach Pauline Manser said in a release. "It’s important that we’re focused and go into this one with everything at our disposal and pushing as hard as we can to get all four wins.”

Baseball: Lobos overcome slow start to take lead, but ultimately fall to Red Raiders

Instead, the Red Raiders defended home turf and beat the Lobos decisively, 12-4. New Mexico was able to produce a lead in the top of the fourth inning, going up 4-3, but Texas Tech quickly recovered and tacked on a multitude of insurance runs in the latter innings of play. Texas Tech got on the score board first, tallying three runs in the bottom of the second inning, though its offensive production in that time was highlighted by a two RBI double from outfielder Cody Farhat to put the home team up 3-0.

The Rio Grande Rivalry has become more real than ever. After an 11-day search for a new men’s basketball head coach, Vice President for Athletics Paul Krebs decided that NMSU’s Paul Weir was the man for the job. Krebs said that although some people described the process as a bit of a roller coaster, he thought that from an internal perspective things actually went relatively smoothly. “We ended up where we needed to be,” he said. “The process allowed us to get to the right place to find the best individual, best coach, at this time for the University of New Mexico.”

Track and Field: Lobos expect solid performance at Bryan Clay Invitational

Going into the third week of its outdoor season, the Lobo track and field team will face top-notch competition this weekend at the Bryan Clay Invitational in Azusa, California. “It’s probably the best race prior to the championship season that will exist,” head coach Joe Franklin said of the coming meet. “We have people starting Wednesday and we’ll go from there and see how things go. We typically run very well here.” The Lobos posted 12 top-three finishes at the Bryan Clay Invite last year. Stellar marks in this early meet gave New Mexico the confidence to qualify 20 individuals to the NCAA Prelims in the championship season.
