Men's Basketball: Lobos lose to Virginia Tech, play again on Friday

The UNM men’s basketball team took a 92-72 loss to the Virginia Tech Hokies on Thanksgiving in the first round of the Wooden Legacy in California. The loss dropped the Lobos (3-1) into consolation bracket play, where they will face off against Cal State Northridge on Friday afternoon. New Mexico will play again Sunday regardless of the result, but hopes it can improve seeding with a win.

Volleyball: Lobos finish season at .500 after dropping finale to UNLV

New Mexico volleyball finished its 2016 season on Tuesday. with an even .500 record after dropping its finale 3-1 to UNLV in Las Vegas, Nevada. The Lobos (16-16, 6-12 Mountain West) registered their ninth season at .500 or better under head coach Jeff Nelson, and tied at No. 8 in the Mountain West standings with Fresno State. The Rebels (23-7, 12-6) placed third in the regular season after winning 25-15, 25-23, 20-25, 25-21 against the Lobos.

Women's Basketball: UNM to host Thanksgiving Tournament beginning Friday

The University of New Mexico women's basketball team will be hosting its annual Thanksgiving tournament, inviting four teams to compete at WisePies Arena. The tournament opens with BYU (1-2) facing off against Saint Joseph’s (1-3) on Friday at 4:30 p.m. The Lobos (2-1) play in the second game of the tournament against Tulsa (1-3) later that day at 7 p.m.

Men's Basketball: Lobos to see first road action at the Wooden Legacy

The Lobos get their first road test of the season as the team takes part in the Wooden Legacy basketball tournament in Fullerton, California. The 12-game bracketed tournament, begins Thursday, will feature eight teams: CSUN, Dayton, Nebraska, New Mexico, Portland, Texas A&M, UCLA and Virginia Tech. The Lobos begin the tournament with Virginia Tech in the first round on Thanksgiving at 2:30 p.m. The winner will advance to face the winner of the Texas A&M and Cal State Northridge matchup on Friday. The teams that lose will also play against each other.

Volleyball: Lobos look to end season two games over .500

The New Mexico women’s volleyball team will travel to Las Vegas, Nevada to face UNLV in its season finale on Tuesday, hoping to cap the season with a third straight win. The Lobos (16-15, 6-11 MW) climbed to No. 8 in the conference standings by sweeping Nevada and San Diego State last week. The two wins guaranteed New Mexico at least a .500 record for the season, picking up some momentum before they meet conference No. 3 the Rebels (22-7, 11-6).

Women's Basketball: Lobos' shooting comes up short against Texas Tech

Lobo women's basketball seemed to have left its magic shooting touch in Albuquerque, as the team shot a dismal percentage from the field en route to a 69-58 loss on the road at Texas Tech. New Mexico (2-1) has shown it likes to shoot the three, but on Sunday the deep ball just wasn’t there. The Lobos shot just 8 for 37 from beyond the arc, but still managed to keep the score close for most of the game. Both teams struggled shooting from the floor throughout. Texas Tech (2-1) made just under 35 percent of its shots (29 of 83), but the Lobos were even less efficient (23 of 80), connecting on just 29 percent of shots.

Men's Soccer: Lobos' season ends with second round loss to Washington in NCAA Tourney

The UNM men’s soccer team gave up four goals in a game for the first time all season in a losing effort to the Washington Huskies, ending their season two rounds into the NCAA Tournament on Sunday night. The Lobos (12-7-3) took a 4-1 loss to the Huskies (14-6-0), snapping an eight match undefeated streak. Sunday's result was not how head coach Jeremy Fishbein wanted to end the season, but he said the loss wouldn’t take away from all the positives he saw during the entire season.

Volleyball: Lobos sweep San Diego State on Senior Day

The Lobos had a decisive victory on Saturday against San Diego State, setting them up for another winning season. “This was a great week for us. We played two really good teams and went 6-0 in games. It’s such a great turn for the future,” said Lobo head coach Jeff Nelson, expressing his satisfaction about the performance of his team in its last home match.

Football: Colorado State outhustles UNM for big win

For a second straight season, Colorado State spoiled New Mexico’s division title aspirations, beating the Lobos to win its final game ever at Hughes Stadium, 49-31, to earn bowl game eligibility. New Mexico head coach Bob Davie said there was a lot of energy in the stadium and the student section was “on fire” in helping to cheer the Rams to victory. The Rams dominated play on both sides of the ball, consistently putting their playmakers in position to make an impact — and they wasted no time getting things started.

Cross Country: Women finish 7th at NCAAs

New Mexico women’s cross country was unable to defend its crown, but still finished in seventh place to secure a ninth straight Top 10 finish at NCAA Nationals on Saturday. The No. 6-ranked Lobos tailed 310 points to place seventh and registered a season-best spread of just 57.2 seconds, only three points behind No. 10 San Francisco. “From a team standpoint, if you look at the 2-kilometer and 4-kilometer splits, we ran incredibly as a team,” New Mexico head coach Joe Franklin said in a release.

Men's Soccer: Lobos to take on Washington in NCAA Tourney

After an intense penalty kick session in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, the Lobos are ready for another challenge Sunday in round two. The Lobos grinded out a win, outscoring Portland 6-5 in penalty kicks to advance after inserted Parker Ford between the posts to save kicks. New Mexico (12-6-3) will travel to Washington (13-6) to play the 11th-seeded Huskies on Sunday evening.

Volleyball: Lobos host San Diego State on Senior Day

The New Mexico volleyball team evened its record on the season at Nevada last Wednesday, and will try to close things out with wins in the their final two matches. The Lobos earned a sweep over Nevada and return home to host San Diego State in their final home match before heading back to Nevada to finish the season on the road against UNLV. Nevada head coach Lee Nelson said the Lobos had the capability of taking down the Wolf Pack, especially if the team lacked focus or became complacent.

Women's Basketball: Lobos look to go 3-0 against Texas Tech

The New Mexico women's basketball team will travel to Lubbock, Texas this Sunday to take on the Texas Tech Red Raiders in an out-of-conference matchup. The Lobos (2-0) — coming off of winning both of their regular season games so far this season — will have their hands full against a Texas Tech (1-1) team that can put up a lot of points. This is the 18th matchup between the two teams, and Texas Tech leads the series 14-3.

Men's Basketball: Lobos clamp down on defense in second half to beat NMSU

The Lobos ratcheted up the defensive intensity and walked away from their first Rio Grande Rivalry game of the season with a 72-59 victory. “I’ll start off by saying I thought New Mexico State was a really good team,” said UNM head coach Craig Neal. “I thought they played hard. They did a really nice job in the first half. Caught us a little bit off balance.” The first half was tight throughout, as both teams played pretty even. The Lobos (3-0) led for most of this period but the biggest lead was only of six points, which happened three times.

Men's Soccer: Lobos edge Portland in PKs to advance in NCAA Tourney

It took 110 minutes and nine rounds of penalty kicks in 40-degree weather, but the New Mexico men’s soccer team is moving on to play in the second round of the NCAA Tournament after beating the Portland Pilots. The Lobos hosted Portland on Thursday night in a first round-matchup, with over 2,300 fans in attendance. Once again, it was Ford Parker’s appearance in the net that led to a win. The redshirt freshman made the last save of the night by diving to the right, sending the ball straight to the right post and making it bounce outside of the net to the left. The dramatic finish allowed his team to walk away with a 6-5 advantage.

Football: Lobo garners MW Player of the Week honors, the third for the team in 2016

New Mexico football collected another conference weekly accolade — the team’s third in the past six weeks. Junior kicker Jason Sanders took home Mountain West Special Teams Player of the Week honors for the second time this season, after having also been recognized after the season opener. Sanders kept the Lobos within striking distance after the team fell behind 14-0 early in last weekend’s game at Utah State, and the eventual go-ahead score came off his leg.

Volleyball: Lobos sweep Nevada as a milestone is reached

The UNM volleyball team swept Nevada on Wednesday night, and the team hopes to ride the momentum towards closing the season with a winning record. The Lobos (15-15, 5-11 Mountain West) found themselves balanced in all aspects of the game, defeating Nevada (18-10, 9-7 MW) 25-20, 25-23, 25-21 as one of their players hit a major milestone.

Football: Lobos eye bowl game, sixth consecutive win

New Mexico and Colorado State will square off for the final time at Sonny Lubick Field at Hughes Stadium on Saturday as the schools play for history, a potential bowl bid and the continued pursuit of a division title. A release said the 262nd game in the history of the stadium, which opened in 1968, will be its last as the Rams expect to open their new facility next season. Head coach Bob Davie said the game will mark another week against a team that has given New Mexico problems in the past, and provide an opportunity to show that they have improved.
